the dungeons
the dungeons of hogwarts have always been quite cold and dark due to the thick stone walls that make it impossible for any warmth to pass, let along sunlight. some students note the prisonlike atmosphere that haunts the narrow, arched corridors. the much-loved potions classroom can be found here and so can the kitchens, where over a hundred house-elves prepare meals for hungry stomachs. There are two common rooms in the dungeons: Slytherin and Hufflepuff.

the ground floor
if you go through the large double doors, you will find yourself standing in the entrance hall, where the large hourglasses that count the house points gleam proudly for all to see. also on the ground floor is the great hall, where everything from meals to balls is held. the staff room and the caretaker's office are also situated on this floor.

the first floor
if you ascend the large marble staircase in the entrance hall, you will set foot on the first floor. three classrooms can be found here: the one for muggle studies, defence against the dark arts and finally history of magic. the sick or injured students of hogwarts are also often brought to the first floor, specifically to the hospital wing, where they are pampered and cured by the school nurse.

the second floor
aside from a disused girl's bathroom with a dark past, nothing else of note is located here but the statue of a stone gargoyle, which, upon correct uttering of the password, moves to reveal the entrance to the headmistress' office.

the third floor houses not only the charms classroom but also the trophy room, where every medal, cup, shield or statue awarded throughout generations to students for extraordinary achievements are displayed in a crystal, somewhat dusty, glass case.

the library on the fourth floor is the perfect place to gather information on the most various subjects. the books here have been collected over centuries, but have all been looked after lovingly by each librarian that has ever been appointed the position. also on this floor is the ancient runes classroom.

the fifth floor
the transfiguration classroom is located on this floor, and so is the prefect's bathroom, which is certainly not your average toilet. the secret password is revealed only to those who wear the silver 'P's on their robes, and they are allowed the luxury of bathing in the large, rectangular tub which is lined with a number of taps that release not just water, but different flavoured bubble baths.

the sixth floor
a single classroom can be found on the sixth floor: the arithmancy classroom. it is a subject considered extremely difficult by most students, and therefore the fewest actually choose to learn it. still, one wonders why so many prowl this floor's corridors... could it be its numerous broom and storage closets?

the seventh floor
it would seem the only purpose of the seventh floor to house the entrances to the towers. but to those who know of the secret 'room of requirement', which magically appears if one is in need, it has a whole new meaning.

the towers
many towers protrude the ancient stone castle. the most notable ones are with certain the Gryffindor and Ravenclaw tower, where the common rooms and dormitories of the mentioned houses are located. the divination lessons are held in the north tower, and the tallest tower is where astronomy lessons take place. lastly, the west tower is where the owlery can be found, for students who do not own their own bird to write home.

the courtyard
a pretty little square in the center of the castle where students can hang out with their friends, first-years can play tag with each others, and so on...

the flower gardens
these gardens are mainly to create a pretty atmosphere, since the flowers here have little to no magical properties. a few benches have been placed beside the beds, inviting to sit and enjoy the ambience. feel free to pick some of the roses for your sweetheart.

lawns
the lawns are wide stretches of neatly mown grass. their purpose varies. flying as well as care of magical creatures lessons are held here, but so are balls and other things that need large spaces. mostly, the lawns are out of use though, and students are welcome to wander about freely.

greenhouses
this is where professor longbottom teaches herbology and where a huge assortment of plant and plantlike creatures are grown and tended to. it is not an unusual occurence for the greenhouses to be quite empty, as plants do not need to be pruned or watered 24/7, which makes this a nice and relaxed retreat.

quidditch pitch
quidditch at hogwarts is played in a large stadium with enough place to, theoretically, seat every single student. the house teams can hold practices here whenever they want, provided they get there before the other teams. still, as soon as it gets dark, you can expect the quidditch pitch to be quite deserted. many hopeful students who wish to audition for their team often train here in secret, where there is no one to laugh at them.

the lake
most of the time, its surface is flat and placid, though occasionally, sudden ripples appear; quite unnatural if one considers the number of creatures that inhabit its depths, the most famous one being the giant squid. still some brave students dare go for a swim. this is not recommended, but students are free to relax on the nearby field.

the forbidden forest
the forest gets its name because it is strictly off-limits to students, save when the occasional care of magial creatures lesson is held there, but even then: only under the supervision of a teacher. whatever wild and somewhat dangerous creature needs a place to live, it gets released into the forbidden forest. so if you do manage to sneak in somehow... beware.

this is where the train stops to let out all the lucky third-years and up who get to go to hogsmeade, the only entirely wizarding village.

the high street
this is the biggest and busiest road in hogsmeade, probably because its only competition are a few side streets. though if one needs a quiet place for whatever reason, the little branches off the road are very convenient. most of the shops and bars hogsmeade has to offer are lined along this main road.

the three broomsticks
you haven't experienced hogsmeade if you haven't paid a visit to the three broomsticks. it is known widely for its self-brewed butterbeer, which has become the drink of choice for most of the villagers and is immensely popular with the students of hogwarts. be sure to leave a tip for the lovely barlady Carlata, the daughter of the charming Madam Rosmerta, her predecessor.

upon approaching the hog's head, the first thing you are confronted with is the sign depicting a boar's severed head leaking blood. this usually scares off most potential customers. an odd sort of people hang around in there. but if you enjoy the smell of goat and a chilly environment, don't hesitate to head over to the hog's head, but you are strongly advised to bring your own glasses.

madam puddifoot's tea shop
if the hog's head is one extreme, then madam puddifoot's is certainly the other, the balance being the three broomsticks. the first thing you see and think when you enter this cramped little tea shop is pink, pink, pink. only then do you notice the attention to the details, from the frilly [pink] tablecloths neatly placed on the small, round tables to the floating golden cherubs who sprinkle confetti on new visitors [they were such a success after one valentine's day that madam puddifoot decided to keep them there everyday]. this is usually the place for couples to come and enjoy the romantic atmosphere this tea shop resonates.

the shrieking shack
the haunted house of hogsmeade [or perhaps even britain!], few people dared approach let alone enter the shrieking shack. usually, the loud, screaming noises it emanated scared the villagers and students so much that they were too afraid to even think of entering it. today, it's still a creepy place, but it shuts up most of the time now and offers a nice little clubhouse for secret meetings.

knockturn alley
knockturn alley is a dingy alleyway where the shops are devoted to dark arts items. the alley is connected to diagon alley near gringotts. there are stores selling shrunken heads, live gigantic black spiders, and poisonous candles. borgin and burkes is also located here.

platform nine and three quarters
in order to catch the hogwarts express to hogwarts, students must board at platform. you get to it by running toward the solid barrier between platforms nine and ten. instead of hitting the wall, you'll find yourself passing under a wrought iron sign that says "platform nine and three quarters". a scarlet steam engine waits there.

though cleared of dementors and operated relatively humane, azkaban is still a place of dread. some inmates believe that the place is haunted by the ghosts of the former prisoners who were either starved or tortured to death by the constant shadow of fear and loneliness cast upon the old fortress.
