Cadynce Jillian Marshall was known as Miss Turner only one year earlier. Only one year earlier she was engaged to Adam Nicholas Marshall. Only one year earlier she was completely happy and at ease with life. March 26th, 2006, Cadynce was celebrating her twenty-fourth birthday. March 26th, 2006 Adam asked her for her hand in marriage. July 4th, 2006 they set the date for their wedding – October 15th, 2006 which was Adam’s father’s birthday. Only a year before, Cadynce picked out her wedding dress, had her bachelorette party, asked her best friend Lacey Parker to be her maid of honor, and on October 15th, 2006 at 6:30 PM said “I do” to Adam Marshall on the beach just outside their new home at sunset.

For Cadynce it was perfect. Life was perfect. She knew Adam since they were kids growing up in England, and to have him at her side for the rest of her life was her dream come true. Often, dreams are shattered or put to the test, and only then do the strong willed survive, and on November 10th, just five days before their one month as husband and wife, Adam was told he would be shipped out in five days time to fight over seas. Gunnery Sergeant Marshall was needed only one month after his wedding. Cadynce was strong as most Marine wives are, saying good bye to her husband and wishing him the best and only crying in the solace of their bedroom.

Adam missed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s, but on January 13th, 2007, on his twenty-fifth birthday, he spoke to his wife and found out that she was pregnant with their child. She was three months in and due in July. Excited by the news, he promised he’d seek leave to be by her side for their child’s birth. Valentine’s day was also missed, but that day she sent him a letter with different names for their child for him to pick out.
Cadynce was holding up, putting up a front at work, acting like she was okay, being strong, but not having her husband by her side while she went through her first pregnancy alone was killing her inside. She was worried and depressed and on April 1st, mattes worsened. She received a visit from one of the general’s to give her the news that Adam’s unit had been stationed in a section that caused several to be killed and others to be taken. At first she thought it a horrible joke, but the truth settled in quickly. The bodies were being checked now for any possible ID.

Cadynce began having problems with the baby. The stress of not knowing if her husband was alive or dead was too much. If dead, he would never get to meet his child or hold her again, and yet if alive he was P.O.W, and could eventually die where he was. On July 4th, 2007, a year after they set their wedding date, Cadynce gave birth to a healthy baby boy. She named him Nicholas Talon Marshall. After both of their fathers.

Women are strong, but a Marine wife is even stronger. It’s spoken; it’s known, but what if one isn’t as strong as she should be? What if she can’t live with the constant danger? Two months shy of her one year anniversary and she doesn’t know if her husband is alive or dead and she is caring for herself and her son. She has pushed everyone away from her and her son, but will she finally call on her best friend for help? For a shoulder or a hand instead of having it offered freely? A woman may be strong, but some can only hold so much pain before their strength shatters and the world sees them for who they truly are. Broken.
