it’s harder than you know to get where you belongSOMEHOW YOU’RE ALWAYS THERE, SOMEHOW IT’S ALWAYS WRONG, AS FAR AS I CAN SEE Sometimes Katya really, really despised her little sister. Ludmila Demidova was a year younger than Katya, but as far as their parents, and the rest of their family was concerned, she was far more mature than Katya could ever hope to be at this rate. And why? Because Ludmila was already married, and she had already produced one healthy, eight year old daughter Tatiana (more commonly referred to as Tanya), as well as two identical twin boys, David and Dmitri, whereas Katya was just now starting to settle. It was good that she had a boyfriend, but at thirty years old, her family didn’t have much hope for her as far as children were concerned, something she took quite the offense to. Just because she happened to be more careful than Mila when she had sex, there she was being punished and looked down on for it. And, of course, it basically made her the free babysitter, especially when her brother was away for business, as he usually was. Now that Tanya was older, however, Katya had to watch her less… with the focus being on the two boys. They were still infants, but Mila seemed just as intent on tossing them to Katya as she had with Tanya before Tanya had friends she could stay with. Katya was under the impression that Mila just wanted to breed more without the interruption of having to breastfeed and pay attention to her current children. Either way, Katya and Luke ended up babysitting the twins the entire day before, as well as all night.
Fiddling with her necklace, Katya smiled down at the two boys, moving her fingers in front of them as they smiled up at her, in a rare state of contentment. She was thankful that she had Luke to help her all night, having enjoyed playing with the two boys with him. Of course, it worried him how he started bouncing them up in the air, but the babies enjoyed it, so she hadn’t questioned it. After all, he had raised kids before, and all she did was glare at her sister while being forced to feed and change the diapers of children that weren’t even hers. She supposed the experiences were radically different. But, thanks to the boys, Luke had given Katya the day off to spend with them, and she had taken the opportunity to call one of his former packmates, Maddie, and ask if she could meet her in a café. Katya felt incredibly, achingly guilty about the fact that Luke had left his pack over her, especially when he had been at such a high rank. Though she knew he had made the decision for himself, she couldn’t help but want to at least see if there was a possibility of him being able to reenter the pack. Knowing that he would have been angry with her for asking at all, Katya made it a point to keep it a secret from him. The last thing she wanted was for him to be upset with her.
“Aww, you’re so adorable… Your new mummy loves you,” Katya cooed to the two boys in the stroller, moving closer so they could see her clearly. David reached up for her face, making her laugh softly while David seemed preoccupied with her hair. “Mummy loves you very much,” she grinned, giving each of them a gentle kiss on their heads. Katya just hoped she was able to either get Maddie’s scent off of her after the meeting, or come up with some excuse as to why she smelled like the woman once Luke came to pick her up.

She was understandably nervous. She'd never gone behind anyone's back, and done something in secret. Maddie let out a sigh, and hugged her purse closer as she continued towards her destination. She was meeting with Katya, the woman who had caused such a disturbance in the pack. She didn't know how she was going to act around her. She continued on her path towards the cafe that Katya had picked out for them to meet at. Maddie wasn't one to fidget, and yet now she was walking down to her car, and kept messing with either her purse, or her hat. Letting out a short sigh, she blinked and got into her Mini Cooper before turning the key in the ignition. She smiled a little as a familiar song she liked was playing on the radio once she'd actually started her car. Grinning a little, she left her apartment quickly, humming along to the music.
She wasn't exactly sure how this was going to actually work out. At least she didn't have the need to keep her voracious appetite a secret from Katya. She had undoubtedly seen Lucas eat on many occasions. Smiling a little, she pulled into a parking lot near her final destination. She was a little relieved simply by the fact that she wouldn't have to put on some sort of front, feigning that she was a delicate woman. Yes, she was in fact, fairly delicate, however it was more of her emotions that were of a more delicate nature. Her smile brightened as she slid out of the car and stepped out onto the pavement. As always, Maddie was paying attention to every single minute detail. She may not be watching the people, she was however, watching shadows, making sure she kept her head down, avoided eye contact and kept on in her wandering towards the cafe. She stopped, and paused at a shop window, glancing over her appearance as soon as she got closer to the cafe. A hand dipped down to smooth the skirt of her dress as she pulled the brim of her hat down slightly.
Watching herself intently, she made sure that she looked her absolute best, as she had for years. The only time she wasn't focused on looking her best, she was usually elbow deep in cooking and covered in flour. Smiling, she rounded the corner to the cafe and glanced around. In seeing Katya, she drew closer. Passing the protesting host, she kept on. ”I'm meeting someone, and I already found her.” She smiled politely at the grumbling man. Normally, Maddie would have taken her time, pausing and waiting in order to be guided in Katya's direction. This was not a normal circumstance, there was something vaguely different. Then Maddie saw them. She smiled wide before taking a seat across from Katya and looked at the twins, beaming down at them. ”They are so precious..” Maddie had always wanted a family, large and loud. There she was, 30, and not even the prospect of a man to even date.

it’s harder than you know to get where you belongSOMEHOW YOU’RE ALWAYS THERE, SOMEHOW IT’S ALWAYS WRONG, AS FAR AS I CAN SEE Katya gave Maddie an odd look when she saw her outfit, resisting the urge to snort quietly to herself because she knew the woman would hear it. Katya hadn’t given that much thought to the café in which they would meet, but she wanted to pick one where there would be a lot of activity, and two women would hardly be noticed… and beyond that, she would always have the excuse that the café was just overcrowded, and she had simply had to let Maddie sit next to her, otherwise she would have come off as very rude. In any case, however, she had picked a café where there would be a lot of tourists, and where Katya could blend in herself with them. She hadn’t dressed like a French person that day (which was fitting, because she wasn’t French) on purpose, because she wanted to fit in with the other bumbling tourists. But apparently Maddie hadn’t taken the hint, and instead Katya merely raised her eyebrows, grinning when Maddie complimented the twins.
“They have my eyes,” Katya asserted vaguely, leaning close and tenderly pressing a kiss to each boy’s face. Obviously the fact that their eyes were the same color as hers was the only reason they were precious. The way she said it, at least, made it clear that it was obvious… at least to her. But whether or not she was serious, well… that was a wholly different story. Most of the time it was extremely hard to tell, and to date, only Luke and Mila were pretty much always able to tell the difference between when Katya was joking, and when she was actually serious. Continuing to eye the babies, Katya smiled gently at them, reaching in and letting them grab at her hands. “And my nose, but that’s obvious… my nose is better,” she added thoughtfully, shrugging after a moment and turning her attention back to Maddie. Katya almost felt as though she should apologize for bringing two infants… but thought better of it. After all, she wasn’t sorry, so why lie?
“I think it’s pretty obvious that this should… stay between us. Luke would be really mad at me for asking about his business, and I’m sure you’d get in trouble for talking to me. But beyond that… what I really wanted to know if there was any way he could come back… you know, without having to do anything humiliating or me being dead,” Katya stated bluntly, getting right into it, but speaking quietly so others wouldn’t be able to hear them as easily. Seeing as they were surrounded by tourists as well, Katya made it a point to speak quickly, mashing her words together in a way that only a native speaker could really decipher. “Because I enjoy being alive, especially with Luke,” she nodded firmly, trying to stress that last point as much as possible.
