Pandemic. It's not a word people like to hear, but now it's a reality. Tragedy has stricken the entire US . . . the entire globe. A virus was released by some US army base in southern California, and now the entire world has been affected with this horrible disease.

Except for a few. For some reason, not everyone died from the disease. About one in 10,000 people survived, but now they're all alone. Their families are gone, their friends are gone, their enemies are gone. Everything they knew and loved and hated before is gone within a couple short days, leaving these survivors in a new and unimaginable world. While they have packaged food and weapons, they lack the modern conveniences of television, running water, and electicity. And they don't know how many others there are alive.

You are one of the survivors. Will you ban together with your fellow survivors or stay out of everyone's way? After all, it was human error which released this disease in the first place. Who says that something like this won't strike again? And the violence is now uncontrolled. Nothing stops people from breaking into a store or a house to pick out a gun and shoot one of the few remaining people.

Welcome to reality, my friends. You may have survived the plague, but now let's see if you survive Round Two.

Willow's hopes doubled when the lady promised them better food. She ignored what she had learned before, about food not tasting good no matter how it used to taste before. Because now they were going to get some real food. It didn't matter to her where she got it. Ideally McDonald's, but she knew that it was highly unlikely that there would be one. Unless someone managed to get one of them up and running. Willow liked that idea.

The lady--Daria--extended her hands for the girls. Willow looked hesitantly at her and then looked at Jessica waiting for the older girl to decide.

Jessica was glad that there was talk of food, hopefully something better than cereal, but she’d be glad to share. “Ooh. That sounds good.” Jessica said with a grin on her face as she thought of yummy food. Like when her mom used to make things in the kitchen. Somehow everything she thought about made her think of her parents, but she pushed all the thoughts aside. There wasn’t any hesitation when she took Daria’s hand. The young girl had always been quick to trust people, not a trait that was a good one all the time.

“It’s ok Willow. I won’t let anything happen to you.” She spoke to the girl, a smile on her face. Jessica missed her baby sister and had been so protective over her it was natural for her to do the same with Willow. It couldn’t be helped. When she said she would protect Willow she was telling the complete truth. If anyone so much as made her a little sad they’d have Jessica to deal with. In reality she might not have been that big of a threat but she liked to think she could be.

Daria just smiled as Jessica reassured Willow of her safety. Feeling the warmth of Jessica's hand in her own made her hear melt. She missed her daughter and her husband. It was so painful, losing the ones you loved to something that you couldn't fight. Daria wanted to die right beside them. But it was now apparent to her that she had more purpose in life. She smiles, still holding her hand out for the little blonde girl.

Willow watched as Jessica took the lady's hand, and decided that it must be okay for her to take the other one. She took Daria's free hand, the fingers of Willow's free hand twisting around the bottom of the girl's sweater. "Can we have burgers?" she asked, thinking about the McDonald's her mom used to take her to.

Jessica was happy that there was going to be food. "Anything other than cereal is good." She said, not really caring about what they ate. "I don't know how to cook, but mom's do." Yes, she was sort of rambling in her excitement. "Were you a mommy? Mine is gone now." From her otward appearance and actions you'd think that all was fine with her, but when she spoke of her mommy being gone she gave Daria's hand a small squeeze. Not crying was really hard, but she was doing her best.

"So's mine," whispered Willow softly as she looked down at the grass growing wild at her feet.

Daria grinned when Willow asked for burgers. If there was a cow, it was possible, but it might take a while. But she only said, "Well, that's possible." She didn't want to scare the girls. Daria chuckled eve nmore when Jessica said she just wanted anything other than cereal. "I can't imagine that's not so great everyday. Especially without milk." She make a face akin to sour. "Yech." When she asked if she was a mommy, Daria smiled sadly. "Yeah ... She was just over two ... " Tears well up. But Jessica and Willow's hands gripped her own and Daria had to remain strong. She blinked back the unshed tears and simply squeezed back, hoping they would find some comfort. "Well, hopefully I won't be going anywhere soon." She said, hoping that she was right and she would at least be ableto care for thes children. She knew what it was like to live without parents. "I lost my mommy and daddy, too. A long time ago. I was about your age." She said to Jessica, who looked to be about ten years old. "They died in a plane crash on their way home from L.A." She informed them, trying to hold onto a memory that didn't hurt so much.

She led the girls through the park, glad that not many people had decided to visit, so there weren't many bodies. Hopefully The Farm wasn't too bad, either.

Willow listened to Daria's story, short as it was, and then thought about it for a moment. "Were you sad?" she asked, looking up at the old lady. Her own parents had died and she was now sad, so this lady must have been sad, too.

Daria smiled down at the girl. Not a smile of happiness, but one of pain. Of sympathy and empathy. "yes. I was very sad. For a very long time." She told her. Clearly the girl needed to feel as if she wasn't alone in this. And she wasn't. "But then I met my husband and he made me happy again." She explained, becoming more depressed. She'd lost hi, now, too.

Jessica was comforted simply by feeling that there was a grown up in her life again. Somehow that meant things would be alright. "I miss my mommy." Jessica spoke and then looked up at Daria, tears brimming in her eyes. It was hard and she knew it, knowing she lost her whole family and she had been so alone. "Will you be my mommy now? I really need one. I can't do anything by myself." By anything, she meant something as simple as use a can opener or wash her clothes. She just really needed an adult to help her and care about her.

Daria frowned when Jessica said she missed her mommy. She missed her family, too. It was painful. But when she asks if Daria can be her mommy, Daria nearly broke down. She stopped then knelt down in front of Jessica, pulling Willow gently in front of her as well. "Of course I can, my dears." She says with a forced smile, her eyes filling wit htears. She reaches out and hugs the two girls, pulling them close, not wanting to let them go.

Willow was crying again as she hugged Daria. She didn't know if she wanted a mommy again, for she knew that this mommy wouldn't be the same mommy that she had before. But if Jessica judged that this lady would be a good mother, then that was that. She trusted Jessica much more than she could anyone else. She was already like an older sister to her, and they had just met only a few minutes ago!
