“Mama, why are you crying? “No reason, now just go with Lord Yaxley, honey.” She meant her husband. “But Mama, I want to stay with you!” “Hush, do not complain or you will be punished. Do what he says. Now go.”
A crying mother pushed her child forward. He didn’t seem to know what to do – he was stuck between screaming and running away – but he loved his mother and would obey her. In a trembling voice, he talked to the man who frightened him beyond belief. What was happening?
“Yes, sir?” A shiver went down his spine as Frederick Yaxley’s mouth twisted into what looked like a grin. “So tell me, what scares you most, child?” “Wha-what sir?” Balthazar and his mother did not address their father and husband – respectively – as ‘daddy’ or ‘Frederick’. They were terrified of him. “You heard me, and you will answer me now.” “W-Well… I’m afraid of rats, Lord Yaxley .” The boy hung his head as if it was something to be ashamed of. “Rats? Rats, you say? Aha, that is what you are afraid of? Silly boy, silly boy – they are so small and pathetic that they can easily be manipulated. Would you like to see, Balthazar?” Sir Yaxley thought that his son simply meant that he was afraid of muggles, half-breeds, and the other filth. “No, sir.” “What did you say?” “Yes, sir!” He shook. His father motioned for the young man, a captured muggle, to come near him. “Rats are nothing more than scum. They walk the earth, looking for scraps left over from who are truly in power. Son, never associate with rats.” “Yes sir.” “This is what we do to rats, Balthazar…” Sir Yaxley raised his wand. Screaming echoed through the house and Balthazar backed away, swearing to himself that he would never let a rat get the better of him. Filth, the animal – whatever, rats would never, ever infiltrate the empire that he was going to build up someday. When he was older he’d make sure his father knew how strong he was… there was no way that anyone could doubt his power when he was the leader. Lord Voldemort had failed, but he had made a fatal flaw that Balthazar could easily fix. Balthazar wasn’t interested in wiping out the muggles – he was interested in purifying them. If they could be made into workers and such then he would be able to control them. He would be the king and they would be the serfs – he would send governors to help with his flocks of muggles. They would do his work, and he would enjoy it. One day he’d make his father see.
Twenty-one years later Balthazar made his father more than just see. He had built up a strong empire, and he just needed a time to launch it. The silly Order of the Phoenix was clueless, and they had partially disbanded, but some were sure that there was something going on – and there was. However, they had the wrong person. Xavier Zabini was suspected of doing exactly what Balthazar was doing – and it was all because of Balthazar’s father. Had Lord Yaxley not told Xavier then Balthazar would’ve been the one trailed by the Order. The silly people didn’t even realize that he was building up the Death Eaters again. This time, however, he decided to put his childhood fear into his power.
Death Eaters were now Rats – and their deeds fit their name. They scavenged for pieces of their puzzle to fulfill their new master’s biddings, and as Balthazar got more powerful, he decided to take on his father the way that he had always wanted to.“Balthazar, we can’t do it, it’s not possible.” “Are you doubting my abilities or doubting my character, father?” “I am doing no such thing, son, it is simply a statement. I do not think that we can do this.” “And I suppose that you’ve backed out of this whole plan – and told that idiot, Xavier Zabini.” “You are making unnecessary assumptions, Balthazar.” “Unnecessary assumptions – if that is what I am making then you are making unnecessary bonds. All your alliances are weak, and all your connections are false. You wish me to follow in such a weak path? I will never do such a thing!” “Balthazar, calm down, you shouldn’t try and rush these things. The Dark Lord was not rash –” “Are you suggesting that I am, father?” Balthazar’s voice became calmer, and soon the silence was filled. “… no… wait, do not, you do not wish this upon me!” “Yes I do – CRUCIO!” As soon as the Order caught wind of this they decided to be copy-cats. None of the alliances – the neutrals, or the Order – could stay the same. They branched off into many different groups. The Order changed into the REGILIANS, the Death Eaters to the RATS, those who hated to fight and would rather indulge in… other things, to FIREFLIES, the medics into MICE, supporters, but not absolutely for the rats into ANTS, the timid CRAWLERS, and the reclusive SPIDERS. No one can be neutral in these hellish times.
