Chapter 1 – One more Day part 1
Going upstairs Sara went to the room at the end of the hall. Walking into the room Sara giggle a little seeing Joe sleeping half on his bed and half off. Then her attention was turned to the other bed where a mess of curly black hair was sticking out from under the covers. Shaking her head Sara went over to the mess of hair and pulled back the covers. Tickling Nick making him squirm and suddenly before she knew it he pulled her down into the bed tickling her. “Nick, stop!” laughed Sara. “Not till you say it,” said Nick wide awake. “No,” said Sara as tears from laughing formed in her eyes. “Say it,” said Nick. “Joe eats grasshoppers,” said Sara as the tickling came to much, and Nick stop. “Hey!” said Joe throwing his pillow at them. “So what we doing today? I'm losing my three favorite guys soon,” said Sara. “We're bunking down here at the house. I haven't really decided , but I think we'll hang out here,” said Nick. “Perfect cause that concert you guys did last night was crazy,” said Sara. “But fun?” said Joe. “Tons of fun. Get ready,” said Sara as got up. “Sara,” said Nick. “What,” said Sara innocently. “You know what,” said Nick. “Joe, you think it a good ideal,” said Sara as she pretended to pour something. “Yeah, go for it,” said Joe laughing. “See Joe agrees with me,” said Sara. “Joe would agree with that,” said Nick. “Hey,” said Joe. “You would,” said Nick. “So true,” said Joe. “I wouldn't if I were you,” said Nick. “You wouldn't period,” said Joe getting up. “Do what you're going to do,” said Nick giving up. Making her way across the hall into Kevin's bedroom Sara snunk across the room into his bathroom. Grabbing the glass on the sink Sara filled it full of water. Going back into the bedroom Sara stood over Kevin. “Sara Elizabeth Keyton, don't you dare,” said Kevin with his face buried into his pillow. “How?” asked Sara. “I'm not deaf. You maybe five foot four, blonde hair, and blue eyes, but you're not quiet. Contrary to popular belief I'm not a heavy sleeper,” said Kevin lifting is head up as he turned on the lamp on that was by his bed. “I'm going to see what mom has for breakfast,” said Sara. “See you downstairs,” said Kevin taking the glass from Sara. Making her way out into the hallway Sara headed to the stairs. Sitting down on the banister Sara slid down, and hopped off right before the bottom. Smiling from ear to ear Sara went across the dining room into the kitchen. “Mamma Jonas,” said Sara as she went up to the woman who had been like a 2nd mother to her since her mother had died when she was two. “Sara, are the boys up?” asked Denise. “Of course,” said Sara moved her wrist as she felt a twinge of pain. “You okay,” asked Denise causing Sara stop what she was doing. “Yeah, I've been having some pain. Growth most likely, but I'm going to the doctor tomorrow,” said Sara lied. “Okay,” said Denise as she pulled Sara into a hug. “Sometimes I wish you'd adopt me,” said Sara. “Then you have to stop crushing on Nick, and vise versa,” said Denise. “No way,” said Sara as Denise let her go. “No way what?” asked Nick coming into the kitchen. “Nothing! Really!,” said Sara tucking her hair behind her ear on one side. “Okay,” said Nick. “I've got some waffles to make you two get out of here,” said Denise as she shooed the children out of the room. “What was that all about?” asked Nick as the went to the living room. “Girl talk,” said Sara knowing he wouldn't ask any more about it. “Got it,” said Nick. “You excited?” asked Sara as they reach the couch and sat down. “Yeah, I just wish you could go with us,” said Nick. “Me too, but with things coming up,” said Sara. “You don't want to leave before you mom's,” said Nick. “I go every year, but maybe I'll fly out to spend a week with you,” said Sara. “Yeah, that would be nice,” said Nick. “I've been thinking about a lot of things I want you to know,” said Sara. “Little Sis,” said Joe coming in the room cause Sara to sink. “Joe, could you give us a minute?” asked Nick seeing the disappointment in Sara's eyes. “It's okay we'll talk later,” said Sara. “Are you sure?” asked Nick. “Yeah,” said Sara faking a smile. “Okay,” said Nick. “I was thinking we could totally stuff you in one of the trunks, so you could go along,” said Joe. “I don't think so,” said Sara hold her hands in front of her. “It would be total fun,” said Joe nodding his head. “For you maybe,” said Sara. A little bit later Denise called the kids into the dinning room where a plate of waffles for each of them. As always Sara was smack dab in the middle of Joe and Nick while Denise and Kevin were on the other side of the table. Looking towards the stairs Sara soon saw Paul coming, and he came around her side. “Sara,” said Paul kissing the top of her head. “Hey, Papa Jonas,” said Sara. “You're here more than your house. Doesn't your father miss you,” asked Paul as he took his seat at the head of the table. “He'd have to be home enough for that, but he knows I'm in good hands,” said Sara. “Kevin, will you say the blessing,” asked Paul looking over at his eldest son. “Dear God thank you for this food, and bless this food to the nourishment of our bodies plus the hands that prepared it in Jesus name amen,” prayed Kevin aloud, and amens around the table followed. “Joe, are you running this morning?” asked Sara cutting up her waffles. “Yep, getting the guns in shape,” said Joe as he made a muscle with his arm and kissed it. “Mind if I come?” asked Sara before taking a bit of her waffles. “Sure thing, Kiddo,” said Joe reached over and ruffles her blonde hair. “Thanks,” said Sara. “Sara, we got you something since we're leaving,” said Paul as Denise got up and got a thin long box handing it to Sara. “I should be getting you something,” said Sara. “Open it,” said Joe excited. Meticulously Sara took off the bow, and then the wrapping paper. Lifting the lid off Sara was surprised to see a plane ticket. “This is too much,” said Sara as she saw it was an open end round trip plane ticket. “We want you to be able to fly out as soon as you can,” said Paul. “I don't know what to say, but thank you,” said Sara as tears spilled down her face. “You coming to see us will be thanks enough,” said Denise as she hugged Sara. “Come on lets eat,” said Paul. After wiping the tears from her eyes Sara started to eat again. Then Sara felt Nick take her hand at her side in his hand, and she looked in his direction as he smiled at her. Ever since she had met him that smile made her weak in the knees. After helping clear the dishes Sara followed Joe outside. Taking off Sara felt a twinge of pain, but she push through not thinking anything about it. These memories would be all she would have in the end. She couldn't shake what the doctor told the day before. Knowing her fate Sara knew she wouldn't drag the ones she loved the most through it. Leukemia was the word that rang in her ears. There was no way she was going to let them see her in pain like that not if she could help it. This was goodbye and Sara knew she had to do it now. Reaching the park Joe and Sara came to a stop taking a seat on a bench. “Joe,” said Sara. “Yeah,” said Joe out of breath. “Don't forget today, and don't forget who you are,” said Sara. “Hey, it won't be long before you're with us on tour,” said Joe. “Just promise me,” said Sara. “I promise, but you're not dying or something,” said Joe. “No, I'm just not looking forward to not see you guys for so long,” said Sara. “I'll be emailing you with video. Nick will email you detailed emails about our days. Kevin will email you, and parents will too,” said Joe. “Scary,” said Sara laughing. “It's nice to hear you laugh cause you got serious with me,” said Joe. “Sorry,” said Sara. “That's okay,” said Joe. “Let stay for a bit,” said Sara as her every muscle ached. “Okay,” said Joe. “It's nice here in the quiet,” said Sara. “Sometimes it's too quiet,” said Joe. “Come on, we better start back plus I got stop at my house to pick up a few things,” said Sara as she got up. “Alright, can I see” said Joe as Sara took his hands, and pulled him up. “No,” said Sara as they started walking back. “Come on,” pouted Joe. “Not happening,” said Sara. “But,” said Joe. “No buts about it,” said Sara. “Please!” said Joe. “No, you'll see soon enough,” said Sara. “But! But!” said Joe. “You'll get nothing if you don't be quiet,” said Sara. “Lips zipped,” said Joe. “Better,” said Sara. “What did you get everyone else,” asked Joe. “I'm not telling. I told you last year what I got Nick and Nick found out,” said Sara. “No Kevin told him,” said Joe. “But who told him,” asked Sara. “I did,” said Joe. Chapter 2 – One more Day part 2
Grabbing the large bag that looked like Sara had lifted Santa's bag, but it was a part of a costume she had found in the attic so many years ago. It seemed like yesterday as she allowed her mind go to that day. (Flash back) Pulling herself into the attic Sara still had tears on her face. Once again her father was taking some job on some boat. She could hear footsteps below her, and she didn't want to hear him. “Sara,” came Denise's voice. “Is he down there?” asked Sara. “No, can I come up,” said Denise. “Okay,” said Sara as she sat on some boxes and Denise came into the attic. At the sight of Denise that was all it took for Sara to run to her. Burring her face into Denise's shirt Sara sobbed, and Denise wrapped her arms around Sara's small frame. “Talk to me,” said Denise. “He's leaving and he doesn't care. I'll never be enough ever,” said Sara. “That's a lot to be on a ten year olds shoulders,” said Denise as she wiped Sara's tears away. “It always on my shoulders every time he leaves,” said Sara. “Sara, he's just a man, and right now this is the best he can do,” said Denise. “Can go home tonight?” asked Sara. “I already asked your dad and he said it was fine,” said Denise. (End of flashback) Making her way outside Sara thought Joe's eyes were going to pop out of his head when he saw the bag. “I get an allowance. Plus I'm a thrifty shopper,” said Sara closing the door behind her. “Okay, let's get this loot back to the house,” said Joe as they started to walk back towards the Jonas house. “Before they get to wondering where we got to cause you wouldn't last this long,” teased Sara. “Hey, I'm not the only one,” said Joe. “Maybe if there was a cute girl running in front you'd go faster,” said Sara and then broke into a sprint. “You better run,” said Joe as he ran after her. Then all of a sudden it hit Sara like a ton bricks causing her to fall. Hitting the ground Sara was already planning what she was going to say. “Ouch! Clumsy me tripping over my feet like I'm three,” said Sara. “Good thing you have a night in shining armor two block away, but since I'm a gentleman I'll take you to him,” said Joe Scooping her up. When they got to the house Nick came out the door, and took her from Joe. Laying her head against his chest knowing this would be her last day. Taking her into the living room Nick sat her on the couch. “I just twist my ankle. Klutzy me,” said Sara. “You're my klutz,” said Nick as he kissed her forehead. “I love you and not in the brotherly sense of the word,” said Sara getting it out before some else took her moment. “I love you too. When I get back I'll take you on a date,” said Nick. “Where would you take me?” asked Sara. “Remember when we snuck out to the beach,” said Nick. “I wanted to see a beach at sun raise. We got grounded for a month,” said Sara. “Well I was thinking a picnic on the beach in the daytime,” said Nick as Sara and he looked up in time to see his brothers fell into the room from the corner they were hiding in. “Kiss her, so we can get to presents,” said Joe. Laughing a little Nick didn't see it coming as Sara gave him a kiss on the lips. As she pulled back Nick sat there speechless as his heart went a mile a minute. “Finally. Presents,” said Joe as he went and brought the bag to Sara. At The same time Kevin went and got his parents. As soon as everyone was in the room Sara motioned to Joe to come over. “This is for you. You don't just have a voice, but a eye for things no one else sees,” said Sara as she pulled out Kodak Junior Six-20 Series II in the original box. “Thanks, I love it,” said Joe as she handed it to him. “Kevin, I knew what I got you had to have a story behind it. Beside most of the things you treasure do. I found this old guy who made necklaces. I had a wood pick with all our names burned into the back. The wood was washed ashore the day on his hundredth birthday,” said Sara as she pulled it out as Kevin came up to her. “Perfect,” said Kevin as she handed it to him, and he went to sit down. “Mamma,” said Sara motioning for her and she came. “Sara,” said Denise as Sara pulled out a cameo necklace. “It's perfect for you,” said Sara. There were two left for Sara and for her they were last for the reason these would be the hardest gifts for her. Motioning for the man who had been a father in every way that counted. As he came up to her Sara reached out and took his hand in hers. His hand were so big compared to her tiny hand, and Sara love how it made her feel safe and loved. “Papa, you've been there for me all my life. You've loved me in a way only a father could accepting me into the fold guiding me. Besides the rest of the family here you know me the best of anyone. You don't know what it means,” said Sara as a tear escaped. “You made it easy,” said Paul as he wiped the tear away. “I know you never would do this yourself, but I got you a new study Bible,” said Sara pulling the Bible out, and handing it to Paul. “Thank you, it will be nice to put the old family bible somewhere safe,” said Paul as he kissed her cheek, and went back to his wife's side. “Nick, since the day I heard you guys were going on tour I was looking for the perfect gift. I was walking through flea market, and I found this journal. The more I read the more I saw you in this young man from over a hundred years ago. He was going on a journey and so are you. I got you a journal too,” said Sara as she pulled out the leather bound journal that had age to it, and a new leather bound journal handing it to Nick. “It's perfect,” said Nick as gave her a quick peck. “Come on let give them some time together,” said Denise as she shooed Joe and Kevin with Paul's help. “Awkward,” said Sara. “Just a little,” said Nick. “Nick, you've got so much to say, and I want you to write it all down. One day you'll realized how important it is,” said Sara. “Why does this feel like goodbye,” said Nick. “It isn't it's just see you around. I'd never say goodbye to you,” said Sara. “Good cause I'm not going to let you,” said Nick. “You're always right here,” said Sara as she took his hand putting his hand over her heart. “You're in my heart too,” said Nick as he took her hands in his intertwining them. Smiling Sara fought the urge to tell him everything. In her heart Sara knew she had to be strong. This was the best for them all in the end. In the end he'd find someone that was better, and not doomed to be in pain for the rest of her life. “Mind if I go. I would like to spend sometime with Kevin before,” said Sara. “Sure, plus I have to repack Frankie,” said Nick. “Where is he?” asked Sara. “James's,” said Nick. “Okay, I'll be right back,” said Sara getting up. Heading upstairs Sara made a b-line for Kevin's room, and as she reached the door she remembered her first thunderstorm there. (Flashback) Shooting up as the thunder crackled Sara shook like a leaf. Without turning on a light Sara made her way out of her room, downstairs, and out the door with out a sound. Running in the pouring rain Sara ran as fast as her five year old legs would carry her. Reaching the house that was her safe place Sara use her key like she did so often, and went in shutting the door behind her. It was so dark Sara was scared so she made her way upstairs soak to the bone. Seeing an open door Sara ran for it as the thunder crackled, and she dived under the bed for cover. Hearing someone moving Sara froze under the bed afraid of getting in trouble. Then a light was turned on and the bedding was pulled up to reveal Kevin. At the sight of Kevin Sara dove in to his arms sobbing. “Thunderstorm?” questioned Kevin and Sara nodded her head. (End Of Flashback) “Penny for your thoughts?” asked Kevin. “Just remembering my first thunderstorm in this house,” said Sara. “Scared me half to death at first finding you under there,” said Kevin. “You've always been my big brother. Always looking out for me even if I don't know it,” said Sara. “Anytime little sis,” said Kevin. “Take care of Nick for me,” said Sara. “I always do,” said Kevin. “Promise,” said Sara. “Promise, but Sara what is up,” asked Kevin. “Just nerves,” said Sara and that wasn't no lie. “We're all nervous in one way or another,” said Kevin. “I can't hide under the bed any more though,” said Sara. “You can call me day or night. Plus Nick will be calling a lot,” said Kevin. |
