welcome!

life in a small town is never as quaint and simple as it seems. there's always someone with a secret and always trouble to be found. why should aylett be any different?

welcome to aylett, virginia. a rural community with only one school for each grade level for the entire county, it's mostly farm land and country stores. there's a problem with the crime rate, though. no, no inner city problems. drugs and domestic violence seem to really reign supreme, here, and two local gangs like to clash for power in the county.

can the police keep the citizens of this quiet little county safe or will they fall to the crime and disorder that seems to be threatening their peaceful existence. only you can make that decision while you search for a lifeline.

Josie narrowed her eyes at the bigger man and glared at him for a moment. So maybe it was typical little sister reaction, but he did the typical big brother thing! That was what she was supposed to do, right? “Shane,” she said, looking at him seriously, “shut up. As a girl, I get the right to do whatever I want without anyone reprimanding me for it.” She pulled a face at him, like he should already know this crucial piece of information. “Ew!” Josie frowned as her older brother poked her tongue. “Shannon! You know I hate it when you do that! Now I have your dirty ass finger on my tongue! I don’t know where your hands have been!” Josie sighed and then she proceeded to huff at him. “Yeah you are, you dirty liar!” She laughed at him and tickled him in the same spot again. Josie pouted. “I was kidding, Shane!” She pouted playfully and held her arms out to him. “Please?” she whined.

Josie watched him and sighed softly. He was stubborn and she’d get through to him eventually. “Well, I’m just saying if you ever do…” Josie sighed softly and ate some more of her Chinese food. Well, maybe Josie could do something about that. She didn’t necessarily know what she could do, but she could do something. It didn’t matter what she did, as long as her brother got enough sleep at night. Have you seen the man? He was huge! He needed as much rest as he could get! “Shannon.” She stared at him for a few moments. “Shut up. I’m sure there is some amazing girl out there just waiting to be with you.” Josie nodded and patted his shoulder softly. She looked at him and stifled a giggle. “Shane, I see no fat. You aren’t fat! You take after Daddy’s side, and his side his the skinny side. Me? Now I take after Mom’s side and in the next thirty years, my ass will be down to my ankles like Nana.” Josie shuddered at the thought.

Typical, that's what they were. Not that it was a problem, just stating facts, here. Then again, wasn't that a good thing? Rather than fighting all of the time, they were actually able to get along and they seemed to be pretty close. He knew some people who couldn't say the same thing. "Jo, how many times are we going to go through this? Just because you have excuses for being temperamental and moody doesn't mean that you're better than a guy. I thought forward thinking women were supposed to be all for equality..." He shot her a smug expression. This was pretty much your 'typical' time between the siblings. He muttered something about telling her where that finger of his had been when she started to attack him and the large man doubled over, laughing and swatting at her. Leave it to his little sister to find ways to bring down the giant. He feigned a moment of contemplation and then took her into his arms. "You're so lucky I have no choice but to love you and you're so damn cute," he muttered into the top of her head and then let her go again.

Shane nodded. He got what she was saying and he appreciated the concern but it was all on him. If he'd just stop working so much and take time to really take care of himself, he'd be fine. He wasn't doing that. He needed to start eating better, too. Take out was just so much more convenient. He rolled his eyes but he didn't say a word. There was no point in arguing with the girl when she'd made up her mind. You had better luck attacking a brick wall with bare hands. He gave a shudder and made a face. "Jo! I'm eating, here. I don't need to hear about Nana's ass." And she called [i]him[/b] gross?

They were very typical. So typical that it was weird. They were very close, and Josie thought that this was the norm. All siblings should be like this. And if they weren’t, they sucked butt. She shook her head. “Buddy, girls are always better than men. If I were a lesbian, I’d so date myself. If I was a man, I’d date myself!” Josie shrugged and rolled her eyes. “I still make less than other male detectives. Equality has done shit for me. Yes, I have my right to vote, but the electoral college is fucked up anyways and the sad thing is, I’d probably make more money as a porn star.” Josie rolled her eyes and shook her head. “The world is fucked up and it always will be.” Josie gasped as he muttered where his finger had been under his breath and she frowned. “I’ll always take you down, buttmunch.” She smiled up at older brother and hugged him close. “Of course I’m cute. I have to be. Somebody’s gotta make up for your bad looks,” she replied, laughing softly. “By the way,” she added, “I love you.”

She worried about Shane a lot. Especially since he was working in the prison and he was the way he was. He would never really tell her when he was having a problem. That’s not what he did. Josie always called him complaining about things. She was like her mother that way. It was no use trying to convince her of things. Josie was and always would be right in her mind. And that’s how the cookie crumbled. She burst out in her laugh – which she was very embarrassed about. It was high pitched and squeaky. “Oh my god, Shane! Nana would kick your ass if she heard you say that!” Josie replied, catching her breath.

They had their fights, like normal siblings. They weren't from the corn or anything, they just had each other to rely on a lot more than other people. With all of their moving around, it was hard to stay in touch with friends. Phone calls weren't as common for children their own age and there was no texting or emailing. Therefore, when they moved away, they lost the friends that they'd made. With that being said, it was only logical that they might make friends in another capacity - with each other. Shane almost choked as he laughed at her. "Wow. We're not full of ourselves, are we sis?" He would never make a comment like that but, then again, that was the difference between men and women, now wasn't it? "You're better than them and you show them up at every turn. Keep at it, call your union rep. Make some noise, you're good at that. You'll get what you deserve." He nodded and looked down at her with a grin. "And the voting thing fails for men and women, so you can't whine about that one." Since when has his little sister been such the pessimist? It was a little shocking to hear, honestly. He chuckled and poked at her side before kissing her forehead. "I love you too, rug rat."

After having gotten stabbed, you would have thought that she would have accepted his dangerous lifestyle because he'd accepted hers. Yes, he worried but he knew not to let it make him sick like it was probably going to do to her one day. She'd end up with an ulcer, mark his words. He didn't like to talk about his problems. He didn't like to be a burden on those that cared about him - least of all his little sister. He was supposed to be the rock for her to lean on, not the other way around. He grinned over at her and shrugged. "I doubt Nana wants us talking about her ass, either."

Yes, the Harte children were normal children. They were just very close. Shane was her best friend and she could tell mostly anything to him. Some things she couldn't tell him because they were very personal and he was her older brother. Besides, Josie liked how close they were. Of course, they had little fights and arguments over petty things and what not, but that was to be expected! When you were so close, you often fought and bickered more. And it was fun to piss Shannon off. The girl knew him like the back of her hand. "You laugh, but it's the truth!" she said, nodding and placing her hands on her hips. "No, Shannon, I am not full of myself. I just realize how sexy I am." Josie gave him a bright smile and giggled softly to herself. "Well yeah, I can say that I am better than them, but..." She frowned as he said she was good at 'making noise.' "You know, if you weren't helping me out, I would have punched you in the stomach for that last statement." She narrowed her eyes at her older brother and stuck out her tongue. Josie shrugged. She usually wasn't this pessimistic, but these were things to be pessimistic about. The whole world was pessimistic. Josie still hadn't decided whether or not she believed the world was going to end in 2012! Yes, that was one of the things going on in her mind. "If I'm a rugrat, can I be Lilian and Philip? They were beast."

She probably would end up with an ulcer, but it was okay. It was an ulcer for her brother and he was going to pay for the doctor bills. "Well, let's leave Nana's hindparts behind us." She giggled at her own dorky pun, holding her stomach. "Get it? Behind us!" Josie began to laugh hysterically, shutting her eyes as tears began to come out. What? It was pretty darn funny to Josie. She was the comic relief in the family. Well, it wasn't really relief because she did some pretty kooky things and her parents were more worried about her than Shannon. Apparently, Josie was more likely to have children out of wedlock than Shane. And this was probably true.

Yeah, there were some things that he would rather her not tell him. He didn't need to know everything about her life but it wouldn't hurt him to be an active participant in her life, either. This was his sister, after all. He kept his mouth shut about stuff, too. He probably didn't tell her near as much as she told him but he was the big brother, he was supposed to shoulder the burdens on his own and not put them on her. "Well, at least someone does." Hey, if you didn't have confidence in yourself and you didn't love yourself, no one else would think that highly of you, either. In order to be loved, you had to love yourself. At least, that was how he saw it. If you didn't carry yourself in a way that demanded respect and love, no one else would bother to look at you in that way. Then what could you say for yourself? You were lost. "No buts," he said with a shake of his head. "If anyone wants to say different about my little sister, you just send 'em my way and I'll educate them on the finer points of Josephine Harte." Shane offered her a broad smile and a wink at her threat. Hey, he had to break the after school special vibe somehow, right? Her request, however, just left him blinking and shaking his head. He often wondered if it was even possible for the two of them to be related. Like... Seriously?

He loved his sister but she was far too corny for his tastes. She always left him chuckling and shaking his head but not in a way that said he appreciated her comedy. She was a mess of the most epic proportions. Still, that was why he loved her. "So, aside from bugging the shit out of me, what are you up to today?" Shane rubbed at his face and ran a hand through his wild hair. What he really needed was a serious intake of coffee but he had run out and didn't have anymore until he went to the store tomorrow. He could go out and get some but that required too much effort and he was feeling lazy today.
