Mysteriously, at the end of the Eighth Pass, nearly all of the thriving Weyrs were abandoned- Fort, Igen, High Reaches, and Telgar. The people of Pern became confident, through time, that the disappearance of the dragonriders meant the disappearance of Thread. When they waited for the Interval to end, and no new pass greeted them, a confidence became regarded as absolute fact. It was thusly that no one seemed to care, that the Weyrs fell into disrepair. The number of dragons slowly declined, leaving only two weyrs still inhabited, and the dragons slowly slipping away into memory.
But with Thread not returning, dragons were forgotten, unneeded. Only stories were left, only stories of how brave they once had been. Dragons were regarded as on the brink of extinction, as there were only two remaining Queens on the face of Pern- One, growing upward in age, and the other with her successful clutches were few and far between.
No bigger surprise had greeted the people of the vast and scattered Holds, than to see a bronze dragon in their skies, and hear a warning of Threadfall. Rumors had been in place in the North for ages, but now, they were coming from all across Pern, spread by one single dragonrider. In those first moments that uncertainty again began to drift into the minds of the people, the idea of the need for Weyrs was first reborn.
A clutch on the sands of Ista offered a beacon of hope, until an unfortunate disturbance. With the sudden buzz of rumors of Threadfall, the dragonriders were distracted. No one noticed the increasing heat in the hatching sands, or the richer plume of smoke that rose from Ista's still-active volcano, until it was too late. In a single blast, nearly all was lost- Many of the frenzied dragons were lost. The Queen, herself, refused to leave her eggs- Screaming defiance, when a handful of dragons, led by a peculiar bronze, robbed her of a part of her clutch. The Queen was lost, with Ista Weyr, and to the north, peculiar construction began.
When the construction began, no one seems to be quite sure. All that's recalled is that several Turns before, changes began appearing in the face of the mountains on the Eastern coast of Ista Island. Gradually, it became clearer, but only to the fishermen or mariners that still sailed the waters near Ista. There were dragons in the sky.
Kazyeh Weyr, as it quickly became known as, had only one Queen, who had appeared seemingly from nowhere. Only a handful of blue and greenriders were there- And that single bronze, easily recognizeable by the verdigris hilights of his hide. But those few riders were quick and subtle about their work. They went on Search. They scoured Pern for those willing to come, some candidates seeming to appear out of nowhere, much as the Weyr itself had. Kazyeh Weyr had only one Queen, but they did possess something just as good: A queen egg.
Where the eggs that Kazyeh had on its sands came from, no one was willing to say. But they were there, and though few, they were all of good size. An artificial hatching ground was built, and the eggs were tended in shifts by the few dragons that inhabited this strange new Weyr. With time and patience, all began to fall into place. The eggs began to harden, and the future of Kazyeh Weyr began to unfold, ever guarded by the watchful eyes of a silent rider, and his bronze...
