A lot of people tell me they write with music on. I find that I just ... can't. Instead, I derive most of my inspiration from the visuals the songs inspire, and then I try to search for a video to match the emotions I feel. What do you prefer, and why?

Most of my inspiration comes from music and song lyrics, though a picture will provide further inspiration - it's why I often make the banner before writing a story, pushing myself in the right direction.
I don't always listen to music while writing, but often a song will work along with an idea I'm working through. So each story I write ends up having a song associated with it. Longer stories have a few - not one per chapter, but a soundtrack of sorts. I've always thought it was because I trained as a musician before writing, going from a musical keyboard to a linguistic one.

I have to actually DRAW my characters to get a more... vivd look on them. I find that looking at art (of any form visual/performing etc) are a great way to get inspired, but sometimes I only need to feel the mood, which is where I'll listen to music. And like Violet said. lyrics of music help me.
But my favourite way to get inspired it watch T.V and see if there's anthing/one that gives me an idea, especially for names.

I used to be able to write with music playing but now, I could just write stories based on what pops into my head when I listen to a song. I don't really get inspiration from pictures but from what I could actually see outside. It helps me a lot when I'm writing descriptions.

Like Susan, I often draw inspiration from songs, and listening to music doesn't actually mean I can't write, it's that...I don't listen to the music while I write. I know I'm a girl and I'm supposed to be able to do all that multitasking stuff, but...when I'm writing I can't hear a thing. xD So either way, it doesn't matter because I don't hear it. I don't have the patience to search for videos, and I can't draw for peanuts, though I will sometimes make a banner for a story to help inspire me.

I'm a bit of both. Actually listening to music while I write is really distracting to me, unless it's just some soft classical instrumental set on a really low volume. But I'll usually hear a song, and a verse or two will just spark a whole story or one-shot, or even just a scene. I am more of a visual person though, and seeing a picture will definitely spark more ideas. I especially just like going to DeviantArt and browsing the fantasy photos just to see what I can come up with. And while I type, I type with my eyes closed and visualize the story in my head, like a movie, and type with my eyes shut the entire time. Odd, isn't it?
