Official activities included dozens of costumed characters parading up Main Street and brief speeches by Walt Disney World president Meg Crofton and Phil Holmes, vice president of Magic Kingdom. Holmes was a cast member who took tickets on opening day, Oct. 1, 1971. "It was all about the E ticket," Holmes recalled.
He also referenced the ongoing expansion of Fantasyland.
"That will be another part of our legacy that goes on and on," he said.
The ceremony at Cinderella Castle included a mass sing-along of "When You Wish Upon a Star," led by the park's Dapper Dans, a barbershop quartet that has been performing at Magic Kingdom for 40 years.
Fans also stood in line for limited edition merchandise and special cupcakes.
The celebration is to continue into tonight with an extended version of the "Wishes" fireworks at 9 p.m. |
