I have a question for you all, but first a statement. It seems that a lot of guests come to the site, look at our tutorials, and leave. I just don't think that's right. We worked really hard to make and/ or find those tutorials and programs! Why should random strangers get to use our knowledge? So what do you think? Should the board be viewable only by those that register?

I think that guests should be able to view the board, but if you can find a way to make guests unable to download stuff, that would probably help. :)

I think they should be allowed to view some areas but on others they need to register.

You know, I was going to close this, considering I all ready made it impossible for guests to see ANYTHING without registering. But, we seem to be getting a lot of "empty" members. I will rephrase the question and title to suit the discussion I now want.

By "empty" members, do you mean the ones that just joined so they could view the board, then they never get back on again? If that's what you mean, then I completely agree. Maybe you could make it you would have to have a certain amount of posts before you could view certain portions of the site. That's just my opinion on it, though. :)

I would love to do that, sadly invisionfree is very limited. I already have many modifications on this site. The spell checker, the 15 character minimum, the disclaimer at the bottom, etc. The source code is getting pretty big, and I still have to put in the referral system. But, if I do find such a code, or come up with one myself, then I will at least try and implement it.

Yeah, I was expecting that... :). But, if you have any extra space after the referral system, then you should probably at least try out my idea, right? :)

Without a new code, that is impossible. I like that idea personally. But I do have a proposition for you guys. We can turn the forum back on to guests and hide the tutorials section (and 3rd. gen. display) from them, if I add a password to those forums. The reason I have not done this is because it might get tedious typing a password in every time you want to access a certain discussion. I should know how annoying that is, the Admin Control panel makes me do that....

Yeah, that sounds good, and maybe to stop you from having to type a password in every time, you could add a "Remember Me" thing, so that every time you get on, you wouldnt have to type it in, you'd just have to click, and you'd be in. If you could do that, then that would be cool.

Actually it already has a "remember me" option. Also god idea Hiidoran, I know my friend did the same thing to his forums.

No, I mean a "Remember Me" button for the forums that, according to Hiidoran's idea, need a password, then you wouldn't need to type in a password every time you try to access those parts of the forum.

Yes, well upon further looking I have noticed that it would be one password in which every member would enter. That means if a member gave away the password to a guest, they could get in without registering. Seeing how this is pretty unlikely though, I might still do this.

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea to me! The only problem is that they could just register, get the password, and then they read the threads they want to, then never come back. I know that's happened before, and I know it will happen again. :(

Well considering their doing the exact same thing now.... Though it does make the forum look more active. But we are getting cluttered with lots of zero posters. Oh well, 1/4 of pokecommunity is not active either.

Yeah, you do have a point, but I think that it's just disgraceful to do that. *Yells at the zero posters!!!!!* (LOL)

Sometimes I think that people join any forums just to read things. They never post. They never show themselves. Sometimes they make themselves a "Anonymous User" so that nobody knows who it is.

They just came here for our tutorials, but I really don't think it is right.

Maybe the tutorial sections can only be viewed by members with more then 3 posts. So they have to post a little to benefit. Then when they see how good this place is after posting and knowing the people more they will stay.

You should read what we already said. We need a new code to do that. Unfortunately for the moment Hiidoran either doesn't know the code or he does but he can't put it in.

You don't need a code.
This is what you do:

Create a new group called Member 0.5.
Make it so that is the starting group and it can't view the tutorial boards. then at the bottom the the group setting it asks if you want it to upgrade the member to a normal member after a certain amount of posts. Set that to what you want.


Easy as pie... :P

I'm pretty sure that that would require another code, or at least be really annoying...

When I had a forum with Invisionfree I tried it and it was easy...no codes required.

Actually coin is right. I forgot all about making new member groups. However, I'm afraid that this might bring a lot of "spam" posters. People will only post really stupid things and DP and myself would be busy doing nothing but cleaning up the forums. I suppose I will try it for a trial period. If we don't get a lot of spam posts within one week from now, the system stays.

Maybe you could still do the password thing but the only give the password to members you trust and to those that have made quite a few non-spam posts. Then if the start spam-posting you can make a new password and not give it to them. Then if they start good-posting again you could give it tell them the new password ect. That seems logical to me. How about you guys?

That sounds good to me, nice idea! But why would people want to join this forum just for the tutorials? That must mean they are beginner hackers, and this would be the place for them!

Yes, but some people don't see it that way. They just want to look at the tutorials, save them to word documents, and be on their merry way. If they would stick around, they would learn a lot more, plus have some fun!

Yeah, I guess. Those kind of people are what people like us call idiots (the bad kind, LOL).
