Bad Deviantarts

Inspired by recent posts in the "Hilariously bad things thread".

I'm aware that it's kinda rude to make a topic specifically about other people's art being bad, as "bad" is an extremely subjective term. I am an artist myself and I know how difficult and frustrating art can be. But the topic has lately become extremely interesting to me and I think it could lead to some good discussion.


That being said, I'll start by posting what I said about perfectcellrulz:

Anyone who posts Halo/Brawl screenshots.

I wouldn't really even count those, IMO unless they did a mod to the game or something they should just use photobucket.

Anyone who has a fetish, especially inflation and infantism. (What? This is about bad deviants.)

People who recolor characters and screenshots. (Usually Sonicfags.)

And prfctcellrulz and that other guy

Dude, seriously, this is why I started messing with you in another thread. You are blatantly homophobic and sexist. I don’t know how old you are but many straight boys are both those things around the early teens. Just try not to post stuff like that on the internet, lest you shame yourself. Of course there are plenty of adult men who still do that but still.


In regards to bad deviant art, I’d suggest just linking to the frontpage. Almost everyone is bad when they start out, and many, such as myself, continue to be bad. There are, however, an overwhelming number of people who seem to have atrophied artistically. These individuals post variations of the same theme, genre, medium, etc. It’s ok to stick with one thing as this is how we improve, but these individuals seem to be stuck at the same spot in their development as an artist. This spot also happens to be one that most are at when they’re ten years old.

Many ‘deviants’ also just simply aren’t artistic. Because there is no real investment in creating an account on deviant art, there is no risk of loss. Someone who is just going through an art phase can post hundreds of digital photographs of themselves posing in front of their parent’s bathroom mirror. They can also draw poorly thought out cartoons and juvenile images with heavy sexual undertones. Because of this, the nature of free websites, it is to be expected that most of the content be of poor quality. Thankfully most of these people grow bored with it and go on to do more important things such as complete their G.E.D. or get a minimum wage job.

I have only once lost patience with such individuals. After viewing an MS Paint drawing so badly proportioned that Joseph Merrick would instantly be made less self-conscious upon seeing it, I read that the artist had spent several hours drawing it. I could have drawn something better in a matter of minutes when I was eight. So appalled was I, that I felt I should comment. “That was 2 hours and 30 minutes that you could have spent not sucking.” The artist removed my comment. :C

Well my curiosity is piqued now, I'd sure like to see it.

Not everyone who has a fetish is a bad deviantartist. Most people do. Take this guy, for instance:

While his most recent journal entry states that he "has a fetish for [DATA EXPUNGED] and [DATA EXPUNGED]" (good show, sir), he still makes awesome pixel art, NONE of which (to my knowledge) center around any fetish whatsoever.

This I agree with, because it's obnoxious, but the term "Sonicfags" strikes the wrong note with me. But the condemnation of your homophobia comes later. Most of these people are probably well meaning; they just don't seem to have a firm grasp on the rules. And Sonic Heroes was an awesome game. Shin-Megami-Tenseifag.

I draw the bleeding heart and that sketchy guy because i'm mad, i drew the poem for my girlfriend and i draw the Billy stuff because i relate that guy's personaliy to me. there' a whole story behind him. what does your stuff mean? "I'm a little dumb ass that can't draw worth a shit"? I put meaning behind eveything i draw! you draw to look like a dumb ass!

90% of the stuff I do on deviantart is pretty crappy, but I don't tell anyone it's any good so there's no disappointments

Alright, anyone whose seen my abominable dA page knows I shouldn't critisize. But Loving Caress, I have standards, believe it or not! And so comes our next subject, Kazuv!

Now, Kazuv REALLY likes pregnant chicks. Nothing inherently cynapse-destroying about this.

The problem is, everyone. Looks. The. Same.

No matter the setting, pretty much every character has the same faces. It's like they've inbred for centuries.

Rarely, you see a diversion from the basic simplistic, character-deprived model.

Except for gut-size, which is serious buisness.

Basically, he suffers the same problem as the Yugioh robot kid, in that his characters are all basically the same. Replace stupid armor with oversized midsections, though. And I let stuff like this speak for itself.

I'll say that he's good on a technical level -- his art doesn't make me want to go tribal on somebody and eat their face. And he can be good when he does something different, examples being his two non-preg pics which I don't want to look for. It might just be his style, which I can forgive, but he should make his faces more unique; something which becomes real apparent when he portrays real people.

(Also, would you really want the alcoholic "Barren Brooks" as your mom?)

As Leader mentioned, Kazuv really risks stagnating. Study anatomy a bit more, lighten up on the manufactured plastic kawaii, and diversify the subjects a bit more, and he'd be fine.

BB-- let me tell you, everybody has a fetish. It might not be apparent, it might have to be "discovered", but Freud said everyone has a kink and I've seen enough to believe him. Of course, he also said all humans are inherently bi, with only varied levels of denial, which makes you a psychological LOLcow.

i think it'd be easier to make a "good deviantarts" thread. as my friend pointed out once, there are too many people who just put up badly photoshopped photographs of themselves like it's effing Myspace. i think talking about the "bad" members is like finding hay in a haystack that has a needle in it.

This reminds me of something.

One thing that really tends to annoy me is the overly cute exaggerated anime style. Not even so much stuff like Hello Kitty, more in terms of "loli" but without the...you know.

*Eyes that take up 40% or more of the face. The bigger they are, the more annoying it is, especially when you consider how little space the eye takes up on a human face.

On a platonic level, I can understand the logic behind it. Eyes are good at conveying emotion, hence larger eyes convey more emotion. It also makes things look "cuter".

But when the eyes take up more than half of the head, to be frank it just looks fucking ridiculous.

* Gingerbread man body style (basically, when everyone looks like the Powerpuff girls)

* Lack of detail in the actual drawing made up for with UBER-1337 PHOTOSHOP COLORING. This one in particular can be very weird because there are people who color incredible, meticulously detailed backgrounds, and yet the picture's feature is an extremely glossed over, globe eyed ragdoll.

When I created this thread what I had in mind was not just lame self-photography or weird fetishes, but exceptionally bad art.
