Some other ideas we might be able to use:

• A "Triangle World", made up mostly of the shapes and combinations of them, i.e diamonds.
• An effect that removes the skin on your face
• An area defined by some things being in monochrome and others in full color.
• A frozen wasteland with robotics strewn about, like a frozen junkyard

These looks like there from Pan's labyrinth: the animaited series. Also cool sprite pyro and cool monsters ej. Seagle iis my favorite.

(Blergh, sorry for being absent from this topic for so long after starting it; I've had kind of a bad couple of weeks, with my car irreparably breaking down among other things, and have been kind of short on time.)

Thanks for the submissions so far, everyone; I'll definitely make a point of trying to find a place to use them all. However, to be honest, while I said any images could be used, what we'll need the most of is tileset and (animated) sprite graphics -- again, see the samples I linked to in the first post for what they should look like. Not trying to put down those who have submitted other graphics, and as I said, I'll find a way to work them in, but those would be most useful. (I'm going to make some myself, too, of course; I'm not just expecting to sit back and hope everyone else does all the work, but if anyone else can also make some it would help a lot -- and, again, don't worry if you don't think your art skills are up to par; Yume Nikki had a lot of graphics that were pretty rough too.)

Again, though, there's absolutely no hurry; like I said, I anticipate this being a slow-progressing, long-term project, not something that's going to be finished overnight.

ElementJester: You have some really good ideas there. In fact, unless anyone else wants to do so, I think I'm going to get to work myself on making a Triangle World tileset.

(Which is not meant to imply that other people here haven't had good ideas too... there've been a lot of good ideas in this thread already.)

By the way, one more thing we ought to consider before getting too far in: What about the main character? In the original Yume Nikki, the main character is a girl who never left her room except in her dreams. Most of the Yume Nikki fangames have followed suit, but not all, and we certainly don't have to. Do we want to stick with this kind of protagonist, or vary it a little? Use a boy? Have her (or him) able to leave her room in the waking world? Any other twists you can think of?

(Also, although this is something we definitely don't have to decide right now, at some point we're going to have to figure out an ending...)

welp, ive never played yume nikki before but i read through the thread and got a little interested, ive worked quite a bit with RPGMXP so i understand how to make tilesets and OW sprites, if youre looking for some help with shit like that just gimme a pm or something stupid ... even if you dont im gonna sneak in some sprites here and there

If I was any good at spriting, I would help in that department. I've still got a lot of ideas, but I'll try to slow it down so people can make progress on the stuff we have. Glad to hear Triangle World is getting work on it, I'll see what I can do about other aspects. Other doodles and ideas I'm working on now should be up tomorrow.
