I don't know if you have any chemical issues or not but I think you might want to look into antidepressants. If you're feeling this bad you should probably get yourself checked out anyway. If your girlfriend is feeling even worse than you are, I'd give her similar advice, as much as she might understandably be pissed off by that kind of talk. Whatever either of you do, just please do not get into self-medication, that sort of behavior will just destroy you.

When I feel suicidal, I look into learning new skills-- if nothing else, the pursuit of accomplishing something else puts my more self destructive thought processes off for a while. That, and the sense of accomplishment helps.

Yeah what? My mother trusted me alone with my own computer at fourteen 24/7, and before then already let me have all the privacy I ever wanted.

All I did with it was read and draw, though.

I don't have any chemical issues, I can assure you of that. The only drug I've ever touched in my life was a sip of wine on Christmas. I'll look into antidepressants, but I'm not sure if they'd be good for someone my age. I remember reading something saying that they shouldn't be used for people under...18 I believe it was.

And Scythe, my mom refuses to allow me to have any privacy.

Everyone has chemical issues =P It's just a matter of how severe they are, and yeah, yours sound pretty severe, even for your age. There are antidepressants safe for you to take, you just need to look into them.

I will, and the one thing I have been doing quite a lot recently is palaeontological research and drawing. I don't think much of this when doing either of those, but sometimes I just can't focus.

I'm no expert on relationships, but I think Rev's advice is sound. I would bring up the issues to your parents as calmly and rationally as you can, conceding that they might be right about their concerns, but that you also have concerns of your own, and that you would like to reassure your friend. I don't know the details, but it sounds like there might be a lack of communication that is causing these issues to blow out of proportion in their minds.

I have been in pretty bad places in my life before, and you can take it from me that things do get better.

You've got it right. My parents have made no effort to talk with either me or her parents on these issues. I've repeatedly told them, but they don't listen to me.

It's good to know you have some activities. I can definitely sympathize with being unable to focus on what I like to do, or to not feel pleasure from it the way I used to. That's usually what spurs me on to move towards doing something completely different from what I usually do, then switching back when I feel a bit more comfortable.

And I can definitely understand your trepidation towards meds. Hell, the idea of actually taking something terrifies me, even if I'm fine with putting tylenol pain PM (aka SPIDER VEINS NIGHTMARE DRUG) and vodka in my mouth hole.

Well, how do you approach the topic? Is there a time of day when you normally all sit down together to talk? Any kind of forum for communication would be good.

Why exactly won't your mom let you have privacy?
Is she just one of those people who has to control every aspect of everyone's life around her, or does she just not trust you?

We usually don't talk. It's just...hard. There's no time really. My mom just doesn't want me to have any privacy. She likes to know where I am and what I'm doing.

This is something you have to talk with to her, forcefully and multiple times. It's as much her problem as it is yours and if you want to be able to do private-ish activities anytime soon, you should at least try talking this out a few times.

It doesn't sound like she would relent even if you grow older.

You need to keep trying, this is a task of multiple stages and you need to keep at it until she breaks. Otherwise you'll never be able to be alone when you're around her.
