I think I like The Dark Knight Rises the most out of the three Nolan films; I loved Bane and Catwoman, and the action sequences are certainly impressive enough to warrant viewing on their own. Years from now if I am going to watch one of the three films, I think I'll choose this one.

As for Mothra 2, while I like the suit designs and some of the effects work, I never could get invested in the rather basic story and generic characters. I had the same problem with the first film. I would like to one day see the third one, but I don't believe it has ever been domestically released in the West.

While I'm having trouble choosing which of the Nolan Batman films is my favorite, I will say that TDKR was a pretty flawless way to end the trilogy.

I also love the fact that Johnathan Crane was shoehorned into every film.

Yeah, Paranorman was amazing.

I also just saw Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins. It was really great. Miike's the only director I know who could make a movie that's over two hours and that doesn't have much action right up until the end, when there's a forty-minute fight scene, and not have it drag on at all. My one complaint is that, as is often the case with movies that have a lot of main characters, there isn't a whole lot of time devoted to making them all likable.

One weird note: Apparently in an interview Miike nonchalantly revealed that the reason one character survived a seemingly fatal wound (specifically a wakizashi to the neck) is because he is not, in fact, human, but a yokai. There's no indication of this in the movie, which contains no supernatural elements. The moral of this story is that Takashi Miike can do whatever the fuck he wants.

Saw the Hunger Games.
Wasn't bad. The part where the dog things suddenly burst out of the ground with no explanation whatsoever about how they burst out of the fucking ground shattered my suspension of belief enough to almost ruin the movie, but other than that I can't complain much.

Reading the first book - it isn't too bad either, though I do not like the authors writing style or the way she has the main character describe male characters as "I DO NOT LIKE HIM but he is cute and strong and nice and everyone likes him and he has a nice smile~<3"

Yeah, I would've liked the movie more if the protagonist had any visible depth. This was the movie that made me understand the "strong female" stereotype as a stereotype. The fact that they pretty much played hopscotch with the romance was pretty annoying too.

re: hunger games moive/book

I can sort of justify a girl being so muted if she's been living in a famine zone too long, but that's aside from the point because the protagonist of the book is selfish and hypocritical beyond belief. The book isn't outright awful but it gets worse the more you're able to read into it.

I saw The Orphanage last night. It wasn't really scary, but it was really well thought out, especially the ending. Tomas is delightfully creepy, but never overtly malevolent. He and Simon are probably the two characters you can sympathize the most with, even when he has what is the only frightening scene in the film. It mostly just builds up atmosphere, and while most films build atmosphere to something scary happening, The Orphanage builds up to a more pleasant, if still sad, ending.

Well, I went and saw ParaNorman yesterday. I really liked it, though, imo, it wasn't quite as good as Coraline. The animation was, needless to say, really great, and the jokes ranged from really funny to just okay. My only real complaint is that, despite the amount of activity, it seemed to have a somewhat slow pacing, but the ending more than made up for it. Also, I kinda wish John Goodman had more lines as I really liked his character.

I saw the Hunger Games movie for the first time. It was pretty good. Some scenes that stood out are

SPOILERS

the riot in District 11 after Rue's death, the battle on the cornucopia, and at the end when it's implied the gamemaker guy with the cool beard was forced to kill himself with the nightlock berries.

So cabin in the woods.
One of my favorite movies of all time now.
It manages to be both a good cosmic horror story AND an excellent satire of the horror genre.

I just saw the Forbidden Zone and I WANT THIS MOVIE TATTOOOED ON MY FACE! Seriously, I think it's now one of my favorites. And if they re-make it, they better make it animated, as that would be the only reason I'd ever want to see it remade.
