I just bought The Texas Chainsaw Massacre box set from amazon, it's arriving in a week. I got it primarily because it's the sort of thing everyone should own, and slightly because it's fucking awesome.
One of my favourite slasher flicks is Night of the Demon, a low budget romp about Bigfoot murdering campers. There's a wonderful scene where Bigfoot grabs two girls holding knives and smacks them into one another.
I've come to a realisation that the longer a series goes on for and the more paranormal a character gets, the less scary it becomes. Jason Voorhees for example, there were elements of paranormality in the first movie but it wasn't done in an 'in your face' kind of way. But as the movies progressed and they got more and more strapped for ideas, he became more and more... I'm not sure of the word, ghostly I suppose.
My favourite is Halloween, the original 1978 release, because the victims aren't faceless meatsacks who are there simply to be gutted. They have personalities and can be sympathised with, they have 'lives'. Of course, Halloween's complexity doesn't go very far beyond Loomis' quote "what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply evil". He's an evil guy, killing babysitters, that's about it. But it's done impeccably.

My favorite slasher is Nightmare on Elm Street.
I feel like Freddy Krueger just has an amazing personality for a slasher movie. Also, itty bitty Johnny Depp.
And, donīt kill me but I loved Scream. Scary Movie was like "hurr durr" but Scream managed to parody slashers and be funny, without being too painfully obvious or stupid.

Not sure if this is really a slasher, per se, in that it has some of the elements (people killing each other in gory ways, idiot protagonist, boobies) but isn't the typical "murderer killing teenagers" type of movie. don't look in the basement http://www.youtube.com/movie?v=IkBzctjv3TU...n&feature=mv_srit's pretty cool.

Nah, when Xolta snaps he just takes pictures of lucha jack hanging himself or cries when I tell him he would of been better off if he had killed himself or whatever.
