A recent favorite, "The Beginning Is The End" from Metal Slug 7 carries on the tradition of ridiculously kickass music in the series. While most other games just use organs or ambience or ominous Latin chanting to give a sense of finality, The Beginning is The End relies on its heavy beats, trumpets and dramatically catchy melody. Completely unlike any other "final level" music in any other game I've played.

One of my favorite video game bosses also has one of my favorite boss themes ever! Fast, catchy, and, above all, completely demented, Mr. Patch's theme reminds everyone why you should be scared of the circus.

Though Dynamite Headdy's entire soundtrack is awesome, Sky High really stands out as quite possibly the single best 16-bit boss theme I've ever heard. EVER. This song needs to be given a rock cover so badly it HURTS.

Rozenkreuzstillette is a very strange game. Not only is it a homebrew Megaman clone set in a fantasy setting with an all-female cast, it has gratuitous German thrown everywhere and features about a billion cameos and references to other games. It's hard.

It also has incredibly fucking rad music. It melds standard dramatic boss instruments-violins and organs-with electric guitars- a surefire recipe for success.

Advance Wars has always had very cool little character themes, with fitting styles With its newest installation, Days of Ruin, it upgraded to real rock/electronica instruments, and arguably changed styles.

Oh, and to start an INTERNET FIGHT, these are the best 16-bit boss themes I've heard, and there's more than one because I am a tremendous waffler. There are also tons of honorable mentions. I'd post all those, but not right now.

If you didn't admit this was an awesome song, I'd be inclined to call you sub-human. I'd say this is definitely the best character theme in Chrono Trigger, but it beats some of the other characters' only by 2-3 points on a 100 point scale, IMO.

The song for the battle against White Fatalis. Nearly the best song I've ever heard, ever. The ONLY way to experience it is with headphones at full volume, and when you couple it with the actual fight...glorious.

Dancing Mad, the final boss theme of my favorite Final Fantasy character ever. It just barely ties with the White Fatalis theme as one of the best fight songs I've ever heard.

The incredibly underrated game Rengoku 2 had a great soundtrack, and this song is one of the best on it. Only parts of it appeared in the actual game, as the final boss song and the menu theme.

The Wrathful, another Rengoku 2 song. I love it to bits, and it just fits its sin (wrath) so well.

Revolution, yet another Rengoku 2 song. This one plays when you're on the 99th floor of the 100 floor bonus game, and the fight for that floor is against the flagship character of the games, who never actually appeared in any of them except as cutscenes. It's probably my favorite off the soundtrack.

The Minotaur boss battle from God of War. Easily the best song on the game, it's basically the only thing that kept me from throwing the controller out the window on God mode during that fight.

The final boss, 02's theme from Kirby 64. Yeah, you've all probably heard this one before, but seriously, for a Kirby game this is pretty damn dark. Probably the single most ominous theme in the entire Kirby series.

Also, know what's interesting? According to an official Japanese book on Kirby, 02's premise is that he's a being made out of nothing but negative emotions, completely unable to ever feel anything resembling happiness...and since he can't feel it, he figures no one else should and aims to smother everything in darkness to end all happiness. Damn.

I'm Not Nice, Mimi's second boss theme from Super Paper Mario. I love how unhinged it sounds; rather appropriate considering you're fighting a spoiled little girl whose head turns upside down and sprouts giant spider legs and spits jewels at you.

The final boss's theme from, believe it or not, Sonic The Hedgehog 2006. Though as far as I can tell the entire game was nothing but a colossal trainwreck for Sonic, I cannot deny that this is one hell of a climactic music piece. It's practically screaming "This is what it's all been building up to! No matter what, we cannot lose! THIS IS IT!"

Armored Armadillo's theme from Megaman X. Quite possibly the most hectic music in the game, which befits the stage-you spend a lot of time hurtling through tunnels on spiked minecarts and being chased by tanks.

This song is pretty dang menacing and is a great spin-off of the regular boss theme. and you'd think it'd be pretty hard to top until you unlock the secret stage, and with it the 02 theme. Oh well. At least Miracle Matter feels more like a boss fight than 02 does.

The original Paper Mario was no slouch in the music category either, and that's an understatement.

Here's some from Sonic Adventure 2, which was the last great 3-D Sonic game... I'm still glad that the music for Sonic games has stayed consistently great. But SA2 has a very, very consistently strong soundtrack, even if you're like me and can't stand the wimpier vocal songs or the rap songs.

Metal Harbor. If this had come in an earlier Sonic game, this would easily be a classic. It just screams "SONIC THE HEDGEHOG" right in your face.

Rumbling HWY. This is just a great song, partially melancholy as you run from the place you once called home, but still with that hopeful feeling that you'll win in the end.

Sand Ocean. Somehow I get the feeling that this song is underrated. Anyways, it gives off this badass vibe, like "I'ma gonna stomp right on through your stupid little quicksand level."

Live and Learn, the opening theme. This theme, for some reason, just WORKED for the final battle. Vocal songs can often sound incredibly cheesy as boss themes, but this one is awesome.

The shadow of collosus has great music, as said- but one of my favorites is "gravity beetles theme" from one of the megaman games (i'm not quite sure).
The monster hunter theme is one of my absolute favorite and i actually perform it via guitar on stage with my buddy sean alot. : D

I always like old snes games like r-type for their music too, its all face paced and full of really great guitar that dwarfs any of the well known superstar guitarists of today.

Oh- and street fighter 2. The theme really gets stuck in my head.
