FUCK YEAH.

I love Junji Ito's art style. Also, I love Junji Ito in general. Also, the great white shark in Gyo WAS FUCKING AWESOME. /end caps abuse.

A Gyo anime will be sweet. I usually don't watch anime, but this may call for an exception.
Also, The Sad Tale of the Principal Post is one of my favorites, just because it's so random.

While I love Junji Ito, many of his works are right on the line that divides Absolutely Terrifying and Completely Ridiculous. In a way this is what makes his best stories so creepy: the sense of unease is heightened by standard logic no longer applying. It's incredibly scary when done well, but when it isn't you get things like Jigokusei Lemina, wherein a planet that eats other planets starts coming towards earth, and everyone in the world suddenly stops understanding cause and effect and starts trying to kill the girl whose father discovered the planet, because it's named after her and therefore this must be her fault. It gets even more unintentionally silly.

Gyo anime could be pretty awesome if done right though.

I thought the first chapter of Remina was intense as hell, when we didn't actually see much of it and all we really knew was that it's was speeding towards earth and demolishing everything in it's way.

And then two chapters later we get REMINA EATS THE MOON and the flying cultist brigade.

In all fairness, people DO tend to go batshit in times of strife. See: history of Iran.

But yeah, whether genuinely scary or balls-out crazy, I love Ito's work biggrin.gif He's so remarkably creative.

Bump because I recently bought both books of Gyo and the first one of Uzumaki, and read them all in a night. I must say, the most disturbing thing about the stories is the way people stop caring about what happens, creating a sense of surreality. For example, in Uzumaki, where people should be all like "WTF? Spirals!" and instead don't even bother to question why ghostly pottery is flying all over the place and a girl's corpse is sprouting spiraly hair as she clings to a telephone pole. Likewise for the death-stench circus in Gyo.

For the record, was anyone else surprised to see that the uncle in Gyo was played by Jonathan Davis?

I am a huge fan. I've read everything I could get my mitts on, including the Cat Diary. It's not horror, but it's drawn in identical style to his horror stories, which makes it hilarious.

For those unaware, Cat Diary is basically what Junji Ito's Garfield would be like, and it is amazing.

Sorry for digging up long-dead threads, but I just re-read Hellstar Remina and had forgotten all about this panel here:

With or without context, this has to be the one of the most awesome images ever.

Junji Ito has been one of my favorite artists ever since I first read The Thing That Washed Ashore.

Though I'm afraid I've never actually read anything by Shintaro Kago, at least I don't think I have.
