  Lovecraft's writings are great, and his imagination was awesome, but as far as the mechanics of writing are concerned, he isn't very good, honestly. His prose is gluttonously self indulgent.

  Well...if you wanted to get REALLY picky, I've always thought that some of the imagery towards the end of that story was a bit comically over the top. For example:

"It was a monstrous constellation of unnatural light, like a glutted swarm of corpse-fed fireflies dancing hellish sarabands over an accursed marsh."

It's still a great story though, and Lovecraft is an excellent writer.
