I admit, I'm skeptical. As bad as videogame movies are, movies based on the concept of videogames are often far worse.

That said, the trailer actually looks like this could be decent. Still not getting my hopes up though. Regardless, I'll definitely end up seeing it because it's a Disney movie and free will is a lie.

Murdercide626 - June 8, 2012 04:32 AM (GMT)
Something worth noting is that this is being directed by Rich Moore, this being his first actual feature-length film. The guy is responsible for directing episodes for some of the funniest animated TV shows, including The Critic, Futurama, and The Simpsons (when it was still good), so I'm more than willing to give this a shot. :)

Supposedly this movie will be really historically important in the movement of getting video games recognized as an art form or some shit.

I have no problems with what I've seen of this movie so far, except for the multitudes of unnecessary celebrity voice actors. But that's generally a given. And at least John C. Reilly and Jane Lynch are usually pretty good.

I can't stop thinking of Kid Radd. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Webcomic/KidRadd

You're thinking of movies adapted from video games.

Movies "based on the concept of video games" are extremely rare and I can't think of any movie so far to explore video game characters as video game characters.

I've only heard of the first one and that's not the same!

Revereche - June 8, 2012 03:06 PM (GMT)
The video game characters are still backdrops in those (or not actually video game characters), though, not so much the focus.

xolta - June 8, 2012 03:16 PM (GMT)
Its kinda odd to see all these video game villians, even if it is just a bunch of cameos.

Jesus lizard - June 8, 2012 03:26 PM (GMT)
I'm personally excited about this, I think it looks cool. c:
I hope we see a good many more made up characters than official ones, or else it will feel like it was just an excuse to cameo as many franchises as they possibly could.

Ragspaper - June 8, 2012 03:33 PM (GMT)
I know they're not the same, I'm just saying my experience has been that people who make movies about videogames don't necessarily know all that much about videogames.

Cheezbob325 - June 8, 2012 07:02 PM (GMT)
I'm really looking forward to this. The last good movie that Disney made without Pixar was The Princess & the Frog, and I'm loving the cameos from well-known characters.

Nonsense. Tangled was good.

I kind of got a kick out of seeing those cameos in the support group, but I didn't see anything I thought was particularly funny in that trailer. So my hopes are not particularly high.

Scott Pilgrim was heavily inspired by videogames, and it was awesome.

Tangled was shit :| But yes.

Jesus lizard - June 8, 2012 08:22 PM (GMT)
I loved tangled. :c

Ragspaper - June 8, 2012 08:42 PM (GMT)
As did I.

And at no point did I say that anything with videogame references was bad, just that a number of movies about videogames end up being quite bad due to lack of research. This doesn't seem like it has that problem, so I'm a bit more optimistic, but it also seems like most of the "jokes," at least those shown in the trailer, just consist of "Hey look it's an easily recognizable videogame character."

dodoman1 - June 8, 2012 08:58 PM (GMT)
Never trust a trailer.

Admittedly, I haven't seen it, and honestly forgot about it earlier. I have heard it's good.

ScutigeraColeoptrata - June 24, 2012 09:47 PM (GMT)
"I get a good feeling" from this trailer (sorry). It sort of looks like the kind of story I would come up with if I was asked to write a nostalgic tribute to video game characters.

It's easy to identify with a character like Ralph, who finds himself alienated in the big budget and cruel world of modern gaming.

Also, I just realized that the purple rhino guy is the final boss from Altered Beast. That's awesome!

Orima-Kazooie - July 9, 2012 10:03 PM (GMT)
Yeah, and the beholder there. Not often we see something from D&D or really any tabletop game in the movies, let alone being taken seriously.
And that zombie is supposed to be from Plants vs Zombies, right?

I for one am very excited for this, but I'm generally optimistic when it comes to big budget media. Which really doesn't make sense to me, now that I think of it...

I don't really see a problem with being optimistic about it. Yeah, you might be disappointed, but it's actually been a while since I was disappointed by a movie.

The two hatchets he's carrying suggests House of the Dead.

Jesus lizard - July 9, 2012 11:04 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I think he's a house of the dead zombie or just a generic nod in the direction of it.

Anyone00 - July 9, 2012 11:07 PM (GMT)
The Kano expy suggest the later.

Ragspaper - July 10, 2012 12:16 AM (GMT)
To be fair, from the look of it there are plenty of expies but also a fair number of actual video game characters. I foresee plenty of headaches in our collective future.

I'm pretty sure that the beholder-looking guy is just a made-up character, probably some king of alien emperor from the look of that crown. Apparently the devil and vampire chick are made-up filler characters too. There's also been some dispute as to whether or not that yellow robot is from Cyborg Justice and if that generic looking ninja is actually supposed to be Smoke from Mortal Kombat.

Sources indicate that is indeed supposed to be the actual Kano. Why he has a robot arm is anyone's guess.

It would seem that the zombie is indeed from House of the Dead. It's owned by Sega, and Disney already got Eggman and Neff, so it doesn't seem like it would be much of a stretch.

Matamata - July 13, 2012 05:58 PM (GMT)
It looks like Disney is adapting fanfiction into feature films.
All of those "cameos" from popular video game series? It'll be a 90 minute commercial.

:P

Okay, I'm calling it. King Candy will turn out to be the real villain.

user posted imageuser posted image

I just get this weird feeling about him. For one thing, he was shown in the star lineup for the main cast at Comic-Con yet we have no idea what kind of role he plays, 2) nobody would suspect him of being evil (except weirdos like me), 3) he's a king, so what's one more corrupt monarch, and 4) he's wearing purple, MAJOR warning sign in Disney animation.

I think he's probably sick of playing the "good guy" and is secretly plotting to take over all the other games in the arcade, and may even turn out to be somehow responsible for the unleashing of the Cy-Bugs from Hero's Duty, and/or may even have formed some sort of alliance with them. This kind of character would offer a nicely twisted parallel to Ralph.

Any thoughts?

ElementJester - July 18, 2012 05:29 PM (GMT)
I'm all on board for this idea. A contrast like that is something you don't see too often these days.

Cool idea. On a semi-related note, is your avatar a sprite of the Beholder from this trailer?

And I don't think it's supposed to be a beholder, as all the characters are supposed to be from arcade games, and as far as I know there has never been a Dungeons & Dragons arcade game, so it's probably a made-up character for the movie.

I think I heard somewhere there have been several DnD arcade games. Not actual RPGs, but action games set in the same universe under the same license. I could be wrong though.

ElementJester - July 19, 2012 02:06 AM (GMT)
Yes, there's at least two, Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara, both of which got ports to the Sega Saturn.

Murdercide626 - July 19, 2012 02:10 AM (GMT)
Oh, cool. The more you know, eh?
But that just makes me curious as to what kind of beholder it's supposed to be and which game it could have shown up in. Is there such a this as a King Beholder?
