Title: Cartoons
xolta - May 22, 2012 06:56 PM (GMT)
I feel like talking about cartoons or animation in general. Basically this topic will be about animation or cartoons in all there forms. Lately I been wachting some of the older disney cartoons.

This is a pretty neat short. It was actually made in the 80s, but it looks and feels like something from the 40s or 30s.

Night on Bald Mountain. 'Nuff said.Actually, no, I feel the need to say more. This is one of my favorite Disney shorts of all time, maybe because I'm into the macabre stuff. This is also one of the first works that truly accompanies the magnitude of Satan (or Chernabog, in the short). He calls followers up from the depths of Hell, turns his arms into a corrupting black ooze, and his mere
shadows are enough to raise the dead. He's not some affably evil demon on a throne as in most interpretations. He's left mostly in shadow for the whole short, never leaves his mountain, and doesn't seem to have a purpose to his evil. And don't even get me started on the demon designs.

Oh, please. Lucifer's just the rebellious, heartbroken son of a relentlessly abusive father.

Lord help me for having knowledge of it, but that was Road Rovers.

This is a pretty obscure Terrytoons cartoon from 1930. It's adorably racist and unexpectedly surreal—I can't stop watching it, at least to the 1:30 mark or so:
[dohtml] <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/0Eczf92kKB4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> [/dohtml]
I'm also a big fan of ComiColor Cartoons, which was founded by Ub Iwerks (creator of Mickey Mouse) after he split from Disney in the 30s. They were never very successful, but for a while they were very productive, and their films could be wonderfully bizarre.
This is a favorite of mine—it's a pretty coherent story by their standards, and the music is fantastic. (I've actually sampled its music for an animation I'm working on.) I love how diabolical Old Man Winter is:
[dohtml] <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/l1YNoGmCChc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> [/dohtml]
This one has some hilarious, grotesque animation in it; at times it reminds me of Flapjack and I wonder whether it may have been an influence. I love the grotesquely detailed closeups on the blue guy's hands:
[dohtml] <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/j4Xxq7QAcsw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> [/dohtml]
This one takes an absolutely ridiculous premise and runs it to its only possible conclusion. I love the strangely phallic Pincushion Man:

Oh yeah, I love the Pincushion man and his song. And how his safety pin design gives him a giant dick he stuffs in his nose.

Oh Housemaster; that was one of the first flash animations I ever saw, and to this day I hear his voice whenever someone on the Internet types in elite speak or says something completely asinine. In the upcoming John Dies at the End film, I hope Korrok sounds like him.
But yeah, you have to love how much of a mass murdering freak Pincushion Man is.
Cosbydaf - May 26, 2012 10:22 PM (GMT)
And later he gets a crane with a wrecking ball while he sells home owner's insurance! I can only assume his idea of "insurance" is similar to a protection racket.

My favorite. An old Bimbo/Betty Boop cartoon

Yikes, pre-war animation is unsettling. There is something so disturbing about a world where everything comes to life and body parts inexplicably morph into phonographs.
Seriously 1930's what the fuck! Betty Boop is an angsty 14 year old and her boyfriend is a creepy furry.

...So.
Fantadrom!
I saw this originally when it was posted on bogleech. But I may as well repost it for the cartoon topic.
It's good stuff.

Here's a cartoon I love by Sanrio of all things. Before they became the merchandising empire that brought you Hello Kitty, they actually made real films!
This one may seem in the vein of Hello Kitty at first, but believe me, it gets very dark. It left me dumbfounded after I first watched it—it's got that 70s anime dubbing, which is charmingly cheesy, but it packs a surprising wallop.

There has to be a good reason on one has put any of the what a cartoon shorts on dvd right?
Dreamer - June 17, 2012 09:19 PM (GMT)
I think it's because, after a few years, the rights to those shorts on those anthology shows go back to their creators. This is how Pen Ward was able to get Adventure Time on Cartoon Network after Nickelodeon refused to pick it up.
