Title: Judas and Jesus
Hedgehodge Monster - March 5, 2012 12:53 PM (GMT)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWrVgimBahoreally satirical, anthro sheep, and one really notable moment that occurs after the credits end.
Yeah, I feel obligated to spam it everywhere now.
Jesus lizard - March 5, 2012 03:32 PM (GMT)
It's enjoyable enough - moreso for me than other people.
Hedgehodge Monster - March 6, 2012 12:41 AM (GMT)
there's evidently more by these same but I haven't seen it yet.
Also Magdalene is sfsadferwre the best character in this film.
Or at least she's the only one who's still sympathetic at the end... or is that just me?
Revereche - March 6, 2012 02:35 AM (GMT)
The animation and art were obviously fantastic from the start, but the characterization looked so stereotyped and bland at the outset. MAN did that turn around!
DAMN nice origin for Baphomet.
Cosbydaf - March 6, 2012 05:24 PM (GMT)
Wouldn't it be hilarious if this got aired on Cartoon Network somehow?
Shoggoth - March 6, 2012 11:23 PM (GMT)
This is great. I want it to get it's own spin-off on Cartoon Network. An Adventure Time sort of thing.
Revereche - March 6, 2012 11:35 PM (GMT)
I'd think more of a Venture Bros. kind of thing . ..
Shoggoth - March 7, 2012 12:34 PM (GMT)
I mean more in the way of someone from CN sees this and decides to make a show out of it. The show itself should be...more like what you're thinking.
scythemantis - March 7, 2012 06:29 PM (GMT)
But then even for Adult Swim they'd have to tone down all the best things about it :C
Revereche - March 7, 2012 07:17 PM (GMT)
Yeah =C Best launched online, like Red vs Blue.
Shoggoth - March 7, 2012 09:21 PM (GMT)
Still, this deserves a sequel at the least.
Revereche - March 7, 2012 09:28 PM (GMT)
Yes, the influence of Baphomet in the later age! =D
leesamfish - March 8, 2012 02:53 AM (GMT)
So this may be me being stupid/confused, but... where was Baphomet? Unless it was Judas' father at the beginning, or the weird dragon thingy at the end. Or did Maria Magdalena turn into Baphomet?
Hedgehodge Monster - March 9, 2012 08:21 AM (GMT)
lol I hope everyone saying this needs to be made into a series is kidding, because it REALLY seems like it should best be left as a standalone cartoon without continuation or sequels or anything.
I'd probably still watch it if it does end up as a real show though.

I think maybe not something that continues with Jesus and Judas, but letīs be honest, more Biblical stories in this style would be many types of awesome. Imagine the conclusion to the story with Abraham about to sacrifice Isaac: if the main characters are goats/lambs, does Abraham sacrifice a human instead?

That would also be interesting, rofl.
And... when I was thinking of this getting a series... my first thought was of these character designs being ported over to a different setting/story but with the same sort of character dynamics/personality.
Okay that won't end well either.

I guess maybe they were saying it's what Mary Magdelena turns into?
Honestly though she was pretty clearly the Whore of Babylon.
Dreamer - March 10, 2012 01:39 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I thought it was the Whore of Babylon too.
Hedgehodge Monster - March 10, 2012 09:27 AM (GMT)
I found the official website for this movie
Evidently Judas' dad is Satan and the thing Mary turns into is "Beast 666".
Revereche - March 10, 2012 05:30 PM (GMT)
Heh, I was just going by the Baphomet imagery.

"Often mistaken for Satan, it represents the duality of male and female, as well as Heaven and Hell or night and day signified by the raising of one arm and the downward gesture of the other. It can be taken in fact, to represent any of the major harmonious dichotomies of the cosmos."

I have a bias in favor of Jesus, though the Jesus depicted here is much more like a grumpy monk than the historical figure who went drinking with low-class members of society. Not to mention his posing and looking up towards the heavens is shown in a disingenuous cult leader type light.
Judas betraying Jesus is portrayed quite masterfully, with Judas exhibiting body language that gets across how base and ignoble he's being the entire time.
The wolves are really just asshole soldiers with superiority complexes, so there isn't much more that can be said about them.
Magdalena is someone who definitely prefers a life of sex and...well, we know she at least experimented with smoking, but is turned off at Judas' combined mean spiritedness (Bullying little Jesus) and awkward lusting after her. This drives her to Jesus, who she respects as her leader for a period of time. She burns off her desires at her night club, and gets upset at Jesus' disappointment over her failure to meet his expectations, but this eventually turns into resentment.
I don't find Magdalena very sympathetic because Judas honestly deserved to get lynched, and killing the mob was an extremely unethical deed.
Also I liked how the mob turned into a big blob of fleece with heads and limbs sticking out, symbolizing how the "sheep" were acting as one being.

2.
an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, especially as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.
3.

4.
a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.
5.
Sociology . a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols.
So, how was Jesus NOT a cult leader?
OuthouseInferno - March 11, 2012 07:32 AM (GMT)
1. You missed "disingenious".
2. religious arguments are terrible m'kay
Admiral_Aorta - March 11, 2012 08:18 AM (GMT)
Jesus pretty much was a cult leader by the standards of the time.
Revereche - March 11, 2012 08:39 AM (GMT)
I'm not down on Christianity, I'm just down on Christianity being too special to be lumped in with the other religions =P
Hedgehodge Monster - March 11, 2012 09:01 AM (GMT)
This animation is pretty much just a slap in the face of right-wing Europeans... notice that Jesus has blonde hair and blue eyes for some reason in this animation?
And that in the crucifixion scene he also seems to be giving off a bizarre rockstar vibe?
Hm, the lack of dialogue in this film makes it hard to tell but I have a feeling Jesus said something really nasty to Mary.
Jesus lizard - March 11, 2012 02:54 PM (GMT)
I'd imagine that the gist of that scene was him calling her a whore and telling her not to be so much of one because sin and junk.

and then Judas objects.

How is it different from other religions? Have I referred to Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam Taoism or any other major religion as a cult? Obviously religions can be defined as cults (and often are in Theologic academia) but when we laypeople discuss "cults" we're generally thinking of "Heaven's Gate" type situations. Bringing up the technical definition is the same nonsense as politicians who claim that n*ggar is defined as an "ignorant person" and is therefore not racist.
I'm pretty careful to be fair to faiths other than my own when discussing them, though I'm certainly not perfect. I'm sure you've experienced Christian exceptionalism, but that's hardly unique to Christians, it's just you're from Iowa and now living in Florida, so there aren't a lot of asshole nationalist Hindus for comparison.
Back on the subject of the cartoon, I felt that the lack of dialogue didn't take away anything, since the body language is really superbly done. It's incredibly easy to understand what everyone's thinking.
The "regular" sheep are also interesting in how pathos driven they are. When Jesus is being a model pupil and Judas picks on him they join along. Later they all start following Jesus, since he seems to be the only one in the group who is self-driven in what he does, but when he's not around they still visit Magdelena in her den because they're totally into that. Later when Jesus dies they remember him as their leader who loved them, and form an angry mob. Whatever they do at the time is very situational they are an excellent example of the "Neutral" alignment.
Revereche - March 11, 2012 09:49 PM (GMT)
I'm sickened by the concept of honor killings and the unfair treatment of women across various major religions, so I'm pretty aware of extremism in many faiths. Cool, if it was just you finding "cult" a derogatory label for any faith - one can never be sure.
Admiral_Aorta - March 12, 2012 02:53 AM (GMT)
I assumed we were referring to the group of followers that jesus attracted during his life as a cult, not christianity as a whole.

I can't really argue with that...though when I hear cult I always think of suicide pacts or that monster in Canada who had children slaves and murdered one of his many wives.
Hedgehodge Monster - March 13, 2012 03:35 AM (GMT)
Okay so I found an interview with the creators
http://www.funnyordie.com/articles/426e432...ucer-olaf-encke-Judas and Jesus both represent aspects of the main animator (well, fancy that!)
-The message evidently was that Christianity is a kind of BDSM that only works if there's Romans around
-The creature at the end is the seven-headed beast from the Book of Revelations

THOSE POLYTHEISTIC GREEKS AND ROMANS SURE WERE PROGRESSIVE IN THEIR ERAS FOR WOMEN'S RIGHTS.
Though I totally agree that the influence of Middle Eastern culture on Central and Northern Europe, in tandem with Roman influence was a major blow to women's rights in those locations.

You realize that Dreamer figured that out already? DREAMER?
Revereche - March 13, 2012 05:13 AM (GMT)
In fairness, the Celts were a lot more progressive before the Christian invaders came along - women could own land, the punishment for raping a woman was severe for the man, etc. Misogyny was not invented by Christianity per se, but Christianity and its sister religions DID spread and enforce a uniquely twisted way of oppressing, demonizing, and controlling women's sexualities.
Oh wait, now you've said that. Did you edit that in, or did my sleep-bleared eyes betray me?
Chupacabra - March 13, 2012 06:58 AM (GMT)

I just checked. He said Mary turned into the "Whore of Babylon"
I was referring to the thing she was riding on.
unless somehow those two things are the same entity. Given what else happens in the book of Revelations I wouldn't be surprised.

The whore is always riding that thing. She's never not riding that thing. It's the only way you can tell it's the Whore of Babylon. Ugh I feel bad for using the word whore so much.
