Title: The Binding of Isaac
Description: Firing tears of firey fire
Tasoth - September 30, 2011 11:10 PM (GMT)
So, having ran into it out of the blue and bought it for around five bucks with the soundtrack, I feel it needs a thread on the ol' Bog.
What it is:It is a 2d, top down arena shooter. 4 worlds, 2 levels a piece with a boss battle at the end. It is definitely influenced by the NES and SNES zelda games when it comes to the dungeon design and lay out. Controls are WASD for movement and arrows for shooting, and you can only fire in the four cardinal directions. Each level is randomly generated, with enemies, bosses and items being included. There are tarot cards that can be dropped and perform a specific function, pills that follow the roguelike formula of being of unknown function until taken, and then weapons/specials/stat boosts to be found or bought.
What it is about:You play Isaac, a little boy who's mother is hearing a voice from above that has told her to kill you after it drove her to strip everything away from you for being impure. Instead of dying like a good little boy, you find a trap door into the basement and dive right in. While tongue in cheek, several items are definitely inspired by abuses inflict by his mother (the Spoon speed boost item covers you in spoon shaped welts, dinner/dessert are dog food items). Most of the enemies are horrifically mangled siblings or warping entities.
Now for some media!

I've loved the creator's other works. Downloading it now to give it a try.
xolta - October 1, 2011 12:20 AM (GMT)
Looks interesting. It might be worth a try.
Dreamer - October 1, 2011 09:33 PM (GMT)
Well this looks like good old fashioned nightmare fuel. Now I wish I had enough money to buy this and the Mortasheen RPG.
Revereche - October 1, 2011 11:57 PM (GMT)
You don't have five bucks? D:

Well, not five bucks usable online.
You see, my parent's won't let me spend my money online as they fear it might allow somebody to hack into their bank accounts if they do it via their credit card or debit card (I do not have a bank account of my own, as they hold my money for me, shameful, I know). But they did give me a pre-paid credit card for my birthday to use online.
But I only have 15 bucks left on it, and therefore only enough to use on Scythe's Mortasheen RPG, which I really, really want to buy. So yeah, unless I get another one for christmas, I'm SOL with that.
dodoman1 - October 2, 2011 02:47 AM (GMT)
Don't buy the Mortasheen RPG as soon as it comes out. Buy your own house instead.
Dreamer - October 2, 2011 02:55 AM (GMT)
Well, I'm still in college and I don't even think I could get a job now given the economy (My mom can't even get a job, despite having far more experience and education). But yeah, I am a loser.
Revereche - October 2, 2011 04:09 AM (GMT)
You could open your own bank account. You seem to be insinuating that you have money to spend irl - your parents shouldn't have a problem with a small sum of your own held in a separate account. If that's hacked, you lose 20 bucks at most - no harm, no foul.
Dreamer - October 2, 2011 04:33 AM (GMT)
This is true. I've been meaning to do that one of these days. But anyway, back on the topic, for those who have played the game, would you consider it a horror game?
I've also heard that a lot of it was inspired by Christian film propaganda and print media (think Jack Chick) from the Eighties, is there any truth to this?
IcyBowser - October 2, 2011 05:27 AM (GMT)
I'm fourteen and I've got a checkings and a savings, man.
However, if you don't have your driver's license, you might want to get that first. Opening a bank account is a bitch if you're not a minor and you don't have a driver's license.
Dreamer - October 2, 2011 05:49 AM (GMT)
I do have a licence. Granted, it's a motorcycle liscence, and I still have only a learners permit for car-related stuff, but it still lets me get around. But let's get back on the topic of the game.
Spivsy - October 2, 2011 10:34 AM (GMT)
I couldn't get a bank account because I didn't have a passport, I can't get a passport because I don't have £80.
Revereche - October 2, 2011 02:25 PM (GMT)
Wow, passports are that big a deal where you are? I guess if it's that easy to drive to the next country . . .
Back on topic, I haven't seen any Chick inspiration in the game itself. The pregame cutscene definitely acknowledges the presence of Christian programming, however.

Under the EU you don't need a passport to pass through member states.
Ebe - October 3, 2011 02:10 AM (GMT)
Not to mention "driving" to another country from the UK involves taking underwater train trips. It's much easier to drive from the US to Canada or Mexico.
IcyBowser - October 3, 2011 07:12 AM (GMT)
Oh my god this is one of the best games I've played in a long time.
My favorite boss so far is definitely Gemini.
Also, Envy makes me want to shoot myself. dat chin.
Tasoth - October 5, 2011 04:35 PM (GMT)
I've only manage to beaten it once and unlock Maggy. As you play and get used to it, it becomes easier to make it towards the end levels. So far, Technology and Monstro's Tooth are my favorite pick ups.
IcyBowser - November 16, 2011 03:43 AM (GMT)
Just beat the full full game
as in SPOILERS
Killed Satan
/SPOILERS
God that final cut scene was so frightening
Shadow Goo - November 24, 2011 07:30 AM (GMT)
It's now on sale for $2.50 until the 28th, making it even cheaper. Considering getting it, since it's made by the same guy who made Gish, an old favorite PC game of mine.
scythemantis - November 24, 2011 08:00 AM (GMT)
I have never heard of passports being necessary for bank accounts. That's weird. What does opening a bank account have to do with visiting other countries?
Anyway, Binding of Isaac seems cool but unfortunately really similar to a game idea I'd entertained for years, so now I have to think of something else.....if I EVER actually get a game idea off the ground.
Shadow Goo - November 24, 2011 03:38 PM (GMT)
Bought it
Dear god this game is pretty hard
KDarkness - November 24, 2011 04:09 PM (GMT)
I finally beat the full game the other day, including The Womb.
I'm so bad at this but it's so addicting.
Shadow Goo - November 25, 2011 03:35 PM (GMT)
Managed to beat Mom for the first time last night. Sweet shit, this game is addicting.
Wortcov - December 20, 2011 08:15 PM (GMT)
bought it because of the sale and based on the fact I allready have played 22 minutes of it can I say its less bad then the rest of the stuff from this guy.

It's not bad, but I've liked other things from him better.

You'd best have a reason for badmouthing Super Meat Boy, bitch.
Wortcov - December 21, 2011 08:36 PM (GMT)
horrible controls and frustating gameplay in general.

That's the point
Wortcov - December 23, 2011 11:28 PM (GMT)
no, the point of a game is for you to enjoy it.
and the random dungeon is rather anoying aswell. at first did I get 2-3 levels, lots of bombs and no money before I died, but today did I get 3-5 rooms, no bombs and barely no money before death 6 times in a row.
and my favorite boss so far is monstro, because he is so adorable and cute.
D.A - December 24, 2011 04:06 PM (GMT)
if you get lucky you can find monstros tooth, pro item to use against bosses also has anybody else faught krampus? that douche bag has nearly killed me twice now
KDarkness - May 29, 2012 03:42 AM (GMT)
Necroing this topic because the Wrath of the Lamb expansion came out today.
So far, from what I've played, a lot of the items they added in are stupidly overpowered (It's much easier to get an item that lets you fly and go over rocks and such, when before there were only like three rare ones, for example), but it sort of makes up for it with stupidly challenging enemies and bosses.
If anyone here ends up buying it, I HOPE YOU LIKE SHIT-TONS OF SPIDER ENEMIES
Krader - May 29, 2012 04:15 AM (GMT)
If I had money, I'd buy this!
Also, Fistula (one of the bosses) is named after a vaginal/anal fissure, occasionally linking the two. Fun!
rabidXworg - June 25, 2012 03:41 PM (GMT)
this is actually one of my favorite games. its amazing what can be done with flash these days.
i kinda sucked at it when i first started and could barely make it past the first couple levels.
after some extensive "practice" ive unlocked all the items and characters and all that jazz. i dont know whether to be proud or ashamed ive logged so much time on it \:
love the demon wings though, thats my favorite item.
Burnt Gospel - June 28, 2012 01:31 AM (GMT)
Technology 1+ Tech 2 doesn't really work as well as you'd think.
KDarkness - July 14, 2012 03:23 PM (GMT)
This game is on sale on Steam for $1.24 right now.
Just sayin'.
Pyro-Gibberish - July 14, 2012 03:32 PM (GMT)
The somewhat awkward firing controls are my only real complaint. The monster designs really drew me in.
Cheezbob325 - July 14, 2012 06:16 PM (GMT)
If you have a usb controller, you can use joytokey to bind the firing controls to the right joystick, I've had no problems with it then.
