I just bought The Texas Chainsaw Massacre box set from amazon, it's arriving in a week. I got it primarily because it's the sort of thing everyone should own, and slightly because it's fucking awesome.

One of my favourite slasher flicks is Night of the Demon, a low budget romp about Bigfoot murdering campers. There's a wonderful scene where Bigfoot grabs two girls holding knives and smacks them into one another.

I've come to a realisation that the longer a series goes on for and the more paranormal a character gets, the less scary it becomes. Jason Voorhees for example, there were elements of paranormality in the first movie but it wasn't done in an 'in your face' kind of way. But as the movies progressed and they got more and more strapped for ideas, he became more and more... I'm not sure of the word, ghostly I suppose.

My favourite is Halloween, the original 1978 release, because the victims aren't faceless meatsacks who are there simply to be gutted. They have personalities and can be sympathised with, they have 'lives'. Of course, Halloween's complexity doesn't go very far beyond Loomis' quote "what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply evil". He's an evil guy, killing babysitters, that's about it. But it's done impeccably.

My favorite slasher is Nightmare on Elm Street.

I feel like Freddy Krueger just has an amazing personality for a slasher movie. Also, itty bitty Johnny Depp.

And, donīt kill me but I loved Scream. Scary Movie was like "hurr durr" but Scream managed to parody slashers and be funny, without being too painfully obvious or stupid.

Freddy is great in that he's not a man behind a mask, he's a character. Many other slasher villains are their movies, but Freddy isn't like that. I always felt that his victims were such Breakfast Club style stereotypes that the villain is the only person in that movie who felt like a real person, despite him being able to enter dreams and all that :P

The best Slasher film I can think of is "Evil-Dead Trap".

Not sure if this is really a slasher, per se, in that it has some of the elements (people killing each other in gory ways, idiot protagonist, boobies) but isn't the typical "murderer killing teenagers" type of movie.

don't look in the basement

SLASHER FLIMS is now officially the name of a new slasher villain

He is actually Xolta who finally snaps

the best salsher flims are te saw series becajuse they're deep and meaningful, making you think about the fragility of life as it clings just out of reach behind a sea of rusty syringes.

Wearing a Lucha Jack mask and weilding a chainsaw.

Nah, when Xolta snaps he just takes pictures of lucha jack hanging himself or cries when I tell him he would of been better off if he had killed himself or whatever.

The series gets a lot out of plot continuity starting with the 1st film... but starting at 2 definitely wouldn't hurt the experience too much.

Some slasher films with more "monstrous" villains:

The Slayer
Absurd aka Anthropophagus 2
Night of the Demon
The Funhouse
Neon Maniacs

Oh god, Neon Maniacs.

Fucking Neon Maniacs.

xolta - May 11, 2012 04:01 AM (GMT)
Wow neon manics looks awesome. Is it on dvd?

Chupacabra - May 11, 2012 04:02 AM (GMT)
Holy shit, I remember Neon Maniacs.

Remembering Neon Maniacs is like finally recovering your memories of being abducted by aliens after many years of not fully understanding why your life is so painful.

Ragspaper - May 11, 2012 04:21 AM (GMT)
Neon Maniacs is indeed on DVD.

One slasher-looking film that I have yet to see but want to is the awesomely titled MIKADROID: ROBOKILL BENEATH DISCO CLUB LAYLA.

... I think my local library has Neon Maniacs in it's video collection...

Ragspaper - May 11, 2012 05:23 AM (GMT)
As well it should.

Shadow Goo - May 11, 2012 06:44 AM (GMT)
....Okay, now my curiosity's been thoroughly piqued. What the hell exactly is Neon Maniacs? The wikipedia summary makes it sound like an unremarkable monster movie.

Ragspaper - May 11, 2012 07:03 AM (GMT)
It is remarkable only in the various themed monsters (there's a samurai one, a biker one, a doctor one, etc), the complete lack of any explanation for their presence, and the fact that in the end they aren't so much defeated as they get frustrated and decide to leave.

The Skeleton Lady - August 18, 2012 06:14 AM (GMT)
"Friday the 13th" part 7. It's just a dumb guilty pleasure and I enjoy it for some odd reason. Also, "Candyman." I watched it after learning about Lacan's psychoanalytic theories in class (it plays a lot into some aspects of art theory) and was just blown away by seeing some imagery that I'm sure is a reference to the symbolism discussed in those theories. And hey, even if it wasn't an intentional reference, I'm still allowed to watch the movie with that in mind, aren't I?
