Who can think of more for me? Species that resemble living photoshops or taxidermy tricks.

House centipedes come to mind.

And of course the platypus, although that might be a bit obvious.

Meiolania, a species of giant prehistoric turtle. They're everything awesome about tortoises, ankylosaurs and glyptodonts rolled into a single derpy armoured package.

Also, Postosuchus. Half T. rex, half Crocodile, and more ancient than both, it's like something from a SyFy channel original movie. Or maybe the villain from The Wuzzles...

scythemantis - March 20, 2011 02:34 AM (GMT)
All cool, but I think only the first two I found really look like what I was thinking, the others are too homogenous. I was trying to find animals that look like someone did a bad taxidermy job :P

Ragspaper - March 20, 2011 02:43 AM (GMT)
Hmmm, in that case, there's the Quagga.

Vineragoons look like a combination of a scorpion (yes, I know it's a certain species of scorpion.), A coconut crab, a tick (With it's big abdomen) and.. I don't even know.. with it's whip-like flagellum. But they're awesome, none the less.

tapir + deer, or alternatively, Alf + sex toy = saiga

And marsupial moles pretty much look like someone tried mounting a mole with a cucumber as the artificial body, preserved the skin improperly, and hid the thing in a vat of bleach when he realized how shitty it looked.

They don't even look like they're alive.

People actually DID think the platypus was a taxidermy trick, so that's worth a mention, at least.

Dammit, I can't remember the name for the life of but I know a few times I've seen a very small fish that had at least three different patterns and colors cleanly divided into patches on its body. It seriously looked like a living patchwork job.

I use to keep chickens. There's still a vacant chicken coop in my back yard.

Will probably get more sometime soon, too.

One of my friends love seahorses. She thinks the amazing thing about them is that they look kinda like they shouldn't exist, yet they still do.

Perhaps you could pass on some seahorse-husbandry advice to me, outside of this thread? I would love to share it with my friend.

xolta - March 22, 2011 05:43 PM (GMT)
Well they were in your fish thank when i was a kid and they never breed. However I sigets making sure the water is alge free, get a cleaner fish.

Furry bird. (Aside: wouldn't these be the sort of feathers a dinosaur might have?)

Also don't forget the okapi, perhaps the pipefish and ghost pipefish, marabou stork, any bird with obnoxious tail-feathers, the aye-aye, that thing with the massive eyes, stoplight loosejaw and other abyssal fish. That's not a great list but I reckon a few of those are really taxidermy-like.
