Doin' it. It's really fucking close. I'm actually pretty surprised. My g/f was drinking a Hoptimum recently and just casually said to me, "You know, I think this is better than Hopslam." My first response was a scoff, but I feel like I might be eating that now. I'm not 100% sure I like Hopslam more than Hoptimum.

If anyone cares, NPR did a story that I found interesting on some wacky dudes in Vermont making beer using with maple syrup.

^^^ I would try it purely by the packaging.
On another note, I'm on my 100th unique brew for the year. It's not even July. :/ |

I had Funky Buddha/Cigar City collab Snack Attack. It's basically a Chocolate Covered Peanuts beer. Super weird but not bad. Smells just like the real thing, but a little heavy on the alcohol flavor. An interesting experiment but not something I'd go back to. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/16410/65185 Also had this one, Sex Panther Black IPA. Had this beer before but didn't remember liking it this much. Very heavy coffee bitterness which matches surprisingly well with the IPA flavors. Funky Buddha is definitely the best beer bar in South Florida now and their in-house brews are absolutely awesome. A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to hit a Cigar City tap takeover. They did a Peach IPA Firkin, Raspberry Saison, and the Xenu Cream Lager. The Firkin was insane, like drinking grapefruit juice, the Rapsberry Saison tasted like somebody dumped perfume in a wine cooler, and the Xenu was actually really good and had a very Bavarian lager flavor to it. |

One of the local bars is having an IPA Festival at the moment. Mostly stuff from the west coast and some Belgian IPAs, but there's some nice surprises. I went on opening night and had a Hopwired by 8 Wired Brewing out of New Zealand. Fantastic beer that reminded me of 90 Minute.
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22618/63896/ Also had some Double Dry Hopped Ruination, which is like regular Ruination with a much stronger malt backbone. And some Mikkeller 1000 IBU because...well, doesn't one have to try the 1000 IBU beer on draft? Going back today to try some more. |

Untappd is just type and ABV. I'll use the rate beer website for descriptions and reviews if I'm experimenting, but it's kind of tedious using a browser on my phone in the store. Instant direct answer at the cost of a text is pretty awesome for must know on demand. I'm going to try it, and again only at the cost of a text and not creating an account, why not.

We went to a beer festival this summer. I drank all the fancy beers.
Then went back to the tiny house and made a wizard staff of like a million Bud Lights while making some girls listen to The Shape Of Punk To Come. |

Light beers are too easy for wizard staff, it should be like guiness or modus hoperandi, heavy or strong.

Hell yeah, but staff is the cans it seems. So put pride on the gut and tolerance, not just tape physics, then it matters a bit more.

SO I will be in Orlando the last week of October and I need a list of southern beers to look for. I'm only truly aware of Cigar City and Terrapin as things I should probably seek out. We'll be driving for this trip so I'm looking to stock up on some dank beers to bring back to the midwest with us. BONUS points if you know of any specific locations (breweries, liquor stores) to hit up on the way to make all of my craft beer dreams come true.

Honestly, I have no concept of what you guys do and don't have.
Cigar City is the only brewery in Florida worth a shit and isn't TOO far away from Orlando (a little an hour) if you want to make that pilgrimage. If not, you'll find CC's stuff all over anyway. The best stuff from them that you can get fairly regularly are the Jai Alai IPA and Tocobaga Amber. The Maduro Brown Ale isn't bad, but not amazing. CC excels more in their rares of which Marshall Zhukov (Russian Imperial Stout) and Humidor Jai Alai are out and about right now. And if you hit the brewery, you just might be able to pinch some of their ultra-rare Oatmeal Raisin Cookie which is awesome. The Humidor Jai Alai is particularly amazing in this list and a must-try. Tastes like Grapefruit juice. I'm not exaggerating. It's the grapefruitiest beer you'll ever have. From Terrapin, you're in a down cycle with them, all of their best stuff is the Side Projects and Seasonals and their weak shit is in right now. Their Pumpkin isn't that good, the Moo Hoo Milk Stout is meh, and Monk's Revenge (BPA) is alright. Their real highlights are the Flux Capacitor, Big Hoppy Monster, and Black Saison, the name of which escapes me now. Also, there's a very small brewery down here called Gordash that brews 3 beers, Panic Attack, Holy Mackeral, and Mack in Black. These are all worth a try as well, not amazing but good. Mack in Black is very good, inf act. |

Also, most Orlando liquor stores suck and are overpriced even if the selection is decent.
Look no further than the grocery store-sized nirvana that is Total Wine. http://www.totalwine.com/eng/Store-Locator There are a few in Orlando and they're GODLIKE. Awesome selection and prices. |

Thanks, sir! This is a good start. Up here the highlights are Founders, Three Floyds, and Bell's, mostly, though we seem to be the Bermuda Triangle of the midwest. For a mediocre town we get stuff from all over but I can't think of anything from farther south than Tennessee. It seems we get more from the east and west coasts. This Total Wine place looks like a great place for a beer tourist.

Haha, well right off the bat, those 3 are going to be better than a solid 95% of what we have. You're not going to get close to matching some beers like Gumballhead or Alpha King. I mean, we've got the usuals like Southern Tier, Stone, etc. Green Flash and Bear Republic are here and if you can't get them in your area, they've got some stuff that is really something. GF's West Coast IPA and Hop Head Red are fantastic as well as BR's Racer 5 IPA and Hop Rod Rye. I think Racer 5, Hop Head Red, and Hop Rod Rye are among the best in the country in their respective styles.

We can't get Green Flash or Bear Republic here but I have had that West Coast IPA and Racer 5 IPA. Both very solid. Hop Rod Rye sounds like something I could really be into. I'll keep an eye out for it. Southern Tier has recently pulled back on their distribution in Indiana so my city didn't get any of the 'good' stuff this year and we didn't find that out until too late. I'm sick of Indiana getting cut off. First Dogfish Head, now this. This state is going to shit.

Well, you've got some solid luck, a bar down here just announced they're getting one of Terrapin's best, Big Hoppy Monster. So you should be able to find it in bottles when you visit.
We also have shitloads of Dogfish stuff, but they're meh anyway. Though if you haven't had Positive Contact yet, get it. It's the best thing they've done in years. One thing about Florida, we're a little variety-challenged as far as breweries are concerned, but once the brewery is here, they tend to like it here and bring a lot of their stuff here. Lots of Southern Tier, Dogfish, Stone, etc. |

Voodoo Doughnut?...it's interesting but far from a favorite.
I've been hitting up the tap nights around here and the only things that I like currently are Due South's Caramel Cream and Funky Buddha's no crusts. Some others are interesting but really that Caramel Cream is amazing. Also, the lady discovered Sweetwater down here some time ago, and it's a regular date night spot for us. |
