harry potter universe so unique? the world that we attempt to
recreate with our own characters and stories? well, here’s a little

HELPFUL LINKS:
SOME THEORIES:

From ‘FRANK THE ENLIGHTENED’ on Yahoo [ON FOUNDERS]:
i have speculations about what happened between ravenclaw and hufflepuff. it’s theory of mirroring. the idea’s quite simple: what happens in hogwarts now shows what’s truly happened in founders era. we know that students of ravenclaw house are kinda divided between supporting gryffindor or slytherin. i believe that it hints that what’s happened to rowena ravenclaw. she’s unsure whether she should support salazar’s idea of the pureblood-only admittance, or godric’s objection towards salazar’s attitude. helga threats rowena that if she’s ever agreed salazar’s idea, she’d forever forsake their friendship. helga has openly declared her support toward gryffindor, by accepting everyone’s willing to study in her house… although she seems to appreciate the hard-worker more. rowena finally gives in and supports godric, but her attitude has made sal’s all alone now. without anyone to back him up, salazar’s decided to leave hogwarts once and for all. watching that salazar’s forsaken his friendship towards godric, rowena blames helga for her earlier threat. rowena did not leave hogwarts, but her friendship with helga has strained/failed… without any doubt.
From ‘KAMI’ on Yahoo [ON FOUNDERS]:
i would guess that if any of the founders were romantically linked, it would be slytherin-ravenclaw and gryffindor-hufflepuff. slytherins are ambitious and want to be the best, while ravenclaws are goal oriented too, excelling academically. they seem to share the similar priorities and traits; with the focus being on each individual's performance or status. on the other hand, gryffindors and hufflepuffs seem to be less driven to prove themselves to be better than others and more interested in working to improve things for the benefit of all or at least for others as well as for themselves. this information leads me to theorize that salazar was attracted to rowena, who shared his desire to be regarded as exemplary. he admired her sucess, while she approved of his ambition, which can fuel a desire to achieve (as in academic excellence). while she didn't agree with his stance on non-admittance to any other than purebloods, it wasn't a big issue because there were enough students that satisfied each founders criteria for selection to their houses. when the issue finally came to a head, rowena refused to side with salazar which he took as an unforgivable betrayal. she was hurt when she discovered that he had kept the chamber of secrets a secret from her. she chose her friendship with helga and godric over salazar and their relationship was damaged beyond repair as a result. perhaps rowena quietly blamed helga for the loss of salazar, for forcing her to side with her and godric. while it wouldn't be rational to blame her, emotions can overrule logic at times. and it wouldn't be the first friendship between females that would've been lost over a man.... rowena may also have resented godric-helga's continued romance, while she was alone.
From ‘MATTHEW STEWART’ on Yahoo [ON INVENTIONS]:
staircases were designed by rowena ravenclaw. this is documented. the sorting hat belonged to godric gryffindor. this is also documented. the other three are guesses, but here goes: if i were to guess, i would put ravenclaw with the ceiling because she had great intellect. also, flitwick (the charms professor) heads ravenclaw. i know it's a stretch, but i still think ravenclaw is the best fit. because she valued honesty, i think hufflepuff probably set up the alarms. because he was able to build the chamber of secrets without the other three knowing where to find it (and because it is a bit sneaky), i think slytherin probably did the room of requirement.
From ‘KAMI’ on Yahoo [ON HEIRS]:
i think that the heirs of each founder would be sorted into that house. j.k. rowling has said enough on the subject of harry's family for me to come to the conclusion that harry is not the heir of gryffindor (although it is a tantalizing idea). i've wondered if albus and aberforth dumbledore are heirs of gryffindor. she said something to the effect that their family was important, so that would be my guess. i think it is also significant that albus dumbledore was widely considered the greatest wizard of modern times, and particularly that he was the only one that voldemort feared. as much as godric gryffindor and salazar slytherin were at odds, perhaps dumbledore was the heir of gryffindor to contend with voldemort, the heir of slytherin. that would leave aberforth as the surviving heir to assist harry in his quest to defeat voldemort. he has to have an important role in deathly hallows; otherwise why would his character exist? in half-blood prince, we were introduced to hepzibah smith, who said that hufflepuff's cup was a family heirloom. that suggests to me that zacharias smith, a hufflepuff, may be the heir of hufflepuff. the other possibility that i would suggest is susan bones, a hufflepuff that is known to have powerful family members (her aunt amelia and uncle edgar). guessing the heir of ravenclaw is trickier though, since we aren't familiar with many students or alumni of that house. marcus belby, one of the ravenclaw students considered for the slug club is a possible candidate. we don't know a lot about marcus, but his clever uncle damocles is known for inventing the wolfsbane potion. i imagine that the descendants of the founders would have inherited some of their powers, talent, and/or cleverness, as we know that voldemort (and his mother, uncle and grandfather) had inherited some of slytherin's.

HELPFUL LINKS:
THE POLITICAL PARTIES:

motto: ante mortem. (‘before death’) and ‘for the greater good’.

the reiner sieg are the most extremist group of pureblood elitst. originally
the followers of gellert grindelwald in his quest for the greater good. the
men and women here are likely those who attended durmstrang around
the same time as grindelwald, or their children (grandchildren even, you’ve
got creative liberty with it). as of right now, after grindelwald’s arrest, those
of the reiner sieg are being hunted by the order of asha and thrown into
nurmengard due to their radical viewpoints regarding muggles and the
ministry. they see muggles and muggleborns as worthless, similar to the
modern day death eaters. however they go out of their way to persecute
and destroy anyone with ties to ‘tainted blood’. they believe the minister of
magic should be collectively appointed in an authoritarian government,
having absolute rule. they are against the wizengamot. often from old pure-
blood families, prominently in germany and russia, and well enough off fin-
ancially to either influence or corrupt authorities and avoid getting captured.

motto: patronus o putus, ‘protectors of the pure’. [i]

the knights of walpurgis were originally formed around a thousand years
ago by the founders of hogwarts in order to protect witches and wizards
from the muggles who feared magic and sought to wipe it out. throughout
the years as peace formed between the races, the knights of walpurgis
never lost their grudge. still bitter, in order to ‘defend’ witches and wizards,
they turned the tables and began attacking those of non-magical blood.
acting as a sort of basis for the reiner sieg, the knights of walpurgis were
always strongly convinced that they were saving or preserving magic. over
the years they developed the idea that pure was power, and that blood was
more valuable if it was strictly magical. the numbers began dwindling until
as of a hundred years ago they were wiped out entirely. tom riddle, already
having ideas in his head similar to this, read of the group and decided to
re-organize the knights with himself as the leader. though the knights are
similar to the reiner sieg in that they promote blood purity, they are more
subtle about it. mostly new graduates of hogwarts from posh pureblooded
families and admires of riddle from school. typically those wanting to make
the ministry of magic more conservatively aligned and preserve blood status.

[i]motto: ‘magic is might’.

the ministry of magic party of the forties was not as focused on creature
equality as it was in modern harry potter era. though not conservative
enough for the knights of walpurgis, the ministry party has a slightly tradit-
tionalist alignment. members of this party are generally those who work
for the ministry, or have relatives that do. could be any age, any blood
status, and any social standing. the ministry party is confident in how things
are being run at the moment. they are satisfied with the current minister,
the way the wizengamot is conducted, and believe that the system is under
control. the basic mission of the ministry party is to keep muggles from find-
ing out about magic or anything involved with magical culture of people.
although there is a general consensus among them that purebloods make
‘better’ witches or wizards because magic is inherent in their blood, they can
be easily persuaded otherwise. essentially, the ministry party is firmly rooted
in the government and political spectrum, ready to debate anyone willing to.

motto: n/a

the new moderate party is the modern day neutralists. they consist mostly
of those who are too indecisive to choose something more radical, or those
who are caught in the middle of the never ending conflict over blood status.
the new moderates don’t care enough about politics or taking sides to worry
where they are affiliated. they aren’t necessarily in support of pureblood
supremacy, yet they aren’t ready to join the order of asha anytime soon.
many new moderates are women who are too respectable, can’t be
bothered, or don’t know enough about the different parties to make a clear
cut decision. either way, the new moderates are very laid back, they do not
usually interject matters of opinion, and try to stay as far away from arguments
as they possibly can. they aren’t necessarily in strong favor of peace, as long
as they don’t have to hear about it in the process then everything is good.

motto: n/a

the avant denne are the slightly more liberal party, although they lean more
towards neutral than extremist. most of the avant denne consist of halfbloods
who are caught in between their blood statuses, unsure whether to support
the purist half, or stand up for the rights of muggles and face conflicts with those
of stronger parties. they are fearful of what groups like the reiner sieg and the
growing knights of walpurgis are capable of, but are not deeply rooted enough
in their beliefs to do anything to stop it. in an ideal world, they hope for equality
for all races and blood statuses, but are realistic and don’t expect it to happen
anytime soon. however, they act in favor of peace. they do not always nec-
essarily agree with the ministry of magic or the government, but are not dis-
satisfied enough with it to rebel or revolt. they want to eliminate corruption
and would be in favor of reforming the ministry of magic to make it more
democratic, however if it meant opposing the ministry party, they would never.

motto: ‘change around every corner’.

the reservist party are mostly young people or muggleborns that think what
the reiner sieg and knights of walpurgis believe is shit. their strongest belief
is blood and creature equality, and they can’t stand how arrogant elitists are
when they say a witch or wizard is worth less because of it. they are openly
opposed to purebloods who think they’re better than everyone else, specifically
targeted against rich families who use their power for ill purposes. the reser-
vists are the opposite of traditionalists; they want change, and they want it now.
they do not believe that anyone should be separate because of race or gender
or magical status. they do believe in equal rights. they are also generally
opposed to being repressed by the conservative government, and believe that
the ministry is much too closed minded and not forward thinking enough for
changing times. reservists tend to be average people with very strong, bord-
ering radical opinions, who will fight for their opinions if they have to.

motto: ex cinis cineris, ‘from the ashes’.

the order of asha is essentially the first formed order of the phoenix. many
believe that the order dates back to the peverell brothers, always in contro-
versy with the original knights of walpurgis, whereas others believed it was for-
med by nicolas flamel centuries ago. no one knows for sure how exactly the
party came to be, except those who belong to it, since they are an underground,
secret league of powerful witches and wizards that oppose the reiner sieg and
blood discrimination (think league of extraordinary gentlemen here ^^). one
does not simply join the order of asha, they seek out the best and brightest and
invite those to join the league, meeting and working to hunt down those doing
evil. the order have no affiliation with the ministry of magic, and don’t trust
it at all. they strongly oppose grindelwald and are deeply disturbed by the
recent reappearance of the knights of walpurgis. sworn to secrecy about every-
thing they do, whether meeting to discuss current issues, or hunting dark wizards.

the seventies.
during the 1970s, voldemort began to gather followers who were eager for a share of his power. the closest followers of voldemort were known as the death eaters. these years got progressively more dangerous and violent.

    - as voldemort's influence grew, some witches and wizards were controlled by the imperius curse and forced to commit atrocities, including the torture and murder of muggles.

    - voldemort capitalized on the prejudice and distrust between the giants and the wizarding world; the giants became voldemort's followers and killed and tortured many people.

    - the dark mark is used by death eaters to indicate a house where they have committed murder.

    - no one dared to become friendly with strange witches and wizards, not knowing if they were voldemort supporters.

    - hogwarts became one of the few safe places in the wizarding world.

    - bartemius crouch is head of the department of magical law enforcement; the aurors are authorized to use drastic methods not differing greatly from the tactics used by the death eaters they fight

1970.
    - albus dumbledore becomes headmaster of hogwarts.

    - bill weasley is born

1971.
    - the whomping willow is planted to protect the entrance to a secret passage to the shrieking shack. the shrieking shack becomes "haunted" and the folks of hogsmeade are startled to discover loud haunting noises coming from a small house on the outskirts of the town once a month; this house is given its name and gains the reputation for being the most haunted building in britain.

    - the marauders start their first year at hogwarts.

1972.
    - the reason for lupin's monthly disappearances is discovered by black, potter, and pettigrew. they resolve to learn how to become animagi to help remus out, but it will be several years until they master the magic required.

    - charlie weasley is born

    - the chudley cannons change their motto from "we shall conquer!" to "let's all just keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best."

1973 - 1974.
    - sirius, james, and peter are working on learning to become animagi.

    - the marauders earn their reputation as practical jokers and troublemakers, although everyone likes them.

    - the marauders first visit hogsmeade.

1975.
    - mundungus fletcher is banned from the hog’s head

    - remus lupin is made prefect.

    - sirius, james, and peter finally learn the complex spells necessary to become animagi. they begin to accompany remus when he transforms, affecting his ability to maintain some semblence of humanity as a werewolf.

1976 - 1977.
    - percy weasley is born

    - remus lupin is made prefect.

    - sirius black, remus lupin, peter pettigrew, and james potter explore the castle and grounds in their animal forms and learn more about the secrets of the place than anyone, even filch. they create the marauder's map, signing it with their nicknames: moony (lupin), wormtail (pettigrew), padfoot (black), and prongs (potter).

    - snape is intensely curious about where lupin goes each month. sirius jokingly suggests that snape follow lupin through the passage beneath the whomping willow. james potter, realizing that snape would encounter a full-blown and very dangerous werewolf at the end of the passage, stops snape from going through, thereby saving his life. snape, much to his disgust, is indebted to james potter because of this.

    - sirius black runs away from home (date uncertain) and is disowned by his family, subsequently treated like a second son by james potter’s parents.

1978.
    - fred and george weasley are born

    - sirius black got his own place, having inherited money from his uncle alphard

    - universal brooms, ltd. producer of the shooting star broomstick, goes out of business

1979.
    - peter pettigrew starts passing information to voldemort. dumbledore and his allies begin to realize that there is a spy in their midst but peter is not suspected.

    - regulus black attempts to back out of being a death eater and is killed on voldemort's orders.

1980.
    - karkaroff and dolohov captured and sent to azkaban.

    - rosier and wilkes, both death eaters, killed by aurors.

    - harry potter, neville longbottom, ron weasley, susan bones, draco malfoy born, as well as other students of harry's year (although some may have been born in 1979).

    - dumbledore interviews trelawney. he meets her at the hog's head about taking the position of divination teacher at hogwarts, although he is disinclined to continue teaching that subject. trelawney makes a prophecy about a baby who will be born at the end of july, a baby who will be able to defeat the dark lord.

1981.
    - ginny weasley is born

    - snape applies for the post of defense against the dark arts teacher at hogwarts; dumbledore hires him as potions master instead.

    - the fidelius charm is cast on the potters with peter pettigrew as secret keeper.

    - voldemort attempts to kill harry potter after murdering his parents, but his spell rebounds onto him. voldemort, nearly dead and without physical form, retreats into the forests of albania where he possess the bodies of various animals to survive for the next decade, waiting. hagrid, on dumbledore's orders, goes to godric's hollow to rescue baby harry from the ruins of the house.

    - peter pettigrew fakes his own death, killing twelve muggles in the process.

    - sirius black is framed for the murders of peter pettigrew and twelve muggles. he is sent by bartemius crouch, sr. to azkaban without a trial.

    - bellatrix black lestrange, rodolphus lestrange, rabastan lestrange, and bartemius crouch jr. are arrested for using the cruciatus curse on frank and alice longbottom in an attempt to discover the whereabouts of voldemort; all of the accused are sent to azkaban.

    - frank longbottom and his wife alice are committed to st. mungo's hospital for magical maladies and injuries, driven insane from the cruciatus curse.

    - bartemius crouch jr. is secretly rescued from azkaban. his mother uses polyjuice potion to take his place there, where she dies within a year. bartemius crouch jr. is kept a virtual prisoner in his father's home, tended by winky, a loyal house-elf.

time travel is crazy shit. i don't think anyone really understands it, including us, so we’re gonna do the best we can to explain it, because there’s nothing else we can really do. well, mel thinks it’s best to start out with the whole time turner fiasco. in the books they were destroyed and everything was cool, but since this is au, or what we like to think of as fractured canon, then anything goes. it’s an rp anyway sooo… right.

there’s not much about time turners except they look like little hourglass necklaces. you spin them a certain amount of times and it brings you back that many hours that you spinned it. if one breaks it sort of makes sense that stuff would erupt into chaos. when one fell it was probably mid-spin and took the entire world back to the founders era.

yeah, but then you get into the whole ‘well is this pre-destiny and was it supposed to happen anyway?’ which just makes things even harder. wouldn’t adult harry in future era remember going back in time in his fifth year and exactly how to fix it?

    no.

because doctor who described time travel best.

“people assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint - it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly... time-y wimey... stuff.

so time is not cause and effect. anything can happen. and we’re going to need a lot of people who can do a good memory wipe charm! :]
