Two sets of combat messages for proof-reading/editing. Please, don't suggest too radical changes but try to stick to minor editing and correcting what's clearly wrong. (You can make your own sets later on
It may seem that coming up with new combat messages is a tricky task, but the messages really need to work in "action" to make the whole combat sequence smoothly readable and understandable. These are as close to final versions as possible. Melee weapon attacks strings - from worst (1) to best (4). As attack declaration already displays weapon information the all we need to know here is the attack noun [thrust/strike/blow] or the attack verb [to stab/to slash/to swing]. 1. Your shaky [strike] is barely an attack 2. You fail to do more than a sloppy [thrust] 3. You execute a skilled [strike] 4. You carry out just a perfect [thrust] Counterstrike messages - from worst (1) to best (4). Weapon name must be included, as well as the attack noun (thrust) or attack verb (to thurst). It also needs to be made clear that this is a counterstrike maneuver. The messages are given from NPCs viewpoint, follow that. 1. He counterstrikes poorly with a shaky [blow] of his [club]. 2. He attempts to counterstrike but fails to do more than sloppy [blow] with his [staff]. 3. He skilfully counterstrikes with a [thrust] of his [knife]. 4. He counterstrikes carrying out a perfectly aimed [strike] with his [battlesword]. |

Weapon Attack strings
4. You carry out Maybe instead of shaky, use pathetic or clumsy? "of his" doesn't universally fit all combinations in common usage, but "with his" does. For variety instead you could use: 3. He skilfully counterstrikes with his [knife] [thrust]. |

Ok. Is this a matter of weapon/attack combination (stab of his knife, blow of his club, thrust of his spear) or something else? (just curious) |

I'm only a native speaker, not a specialist, but my understanding is that a "blow of a club" would be appropriate if you are discussing the wound or the action itself - like in forensics or the physics of it. But when talking about about another subject carrying out the action, the structure "strikes a blow with his weapon" is more appropriate. the first would be more likely to be used as the subject of a sentence, and the latter used as a direct object.
but this is no hard and fast rule to my knowledge, just a tendency of use and certainly may be regional. I'm not in the habit of discussing weapon attacks when I visit overseas |
