Title: Mushroom Cooking
jin - June 14, 2012 08:44 AM (GMT)
Am I right that there is no way to blanch mushrooms, or cook most things, if you don't trade for a cooking pot? Like, a self-sufficient character, or a character living only in the north, can't actually eat bearclaw mushrooms, right? Is there anything short of ironworking that could substitute for a cooking pot?
Relatedly, mushrooms that need blanching must be Boiled, not simply included in food that is heated, right? And then boiled mushrooms no longer count as mushrooms, which means that poisonous-when-raw mushrooms can only be eaten boiled?

In short:
You need a pot and yes it'll still be poisonous if they aren't blanched first.

A mod to make simple clay pottery exists , and Rain here failed to point out that his excellent Iron working mod enables you to make iron pots as well as most basic iron tools. Even better recently there has been addition with recipes for all the axes, so Hermit character is very viable as a playstyle. Basically the only thing you will ever need to go to village for is to learn new rituals.

Erm, I got a couple of related questions: How does one blanch mushrooms?
Just stuff them into a pot (+ water) and boil them? If so, I can't seem to be able to get them out afterwards. If I empty the pot they are gone completely.
Does this mean I can't use them in recipes which need mushrooms (optional or not).
Also, if I'm NOT blanching mushrooms that are unsafe to eat raw, but use them in a recipe that boils, can I safely eat them afterwards, or not?
And another cooking question: On the wiki site it says that turnip can get stewed using embers. How exactly do I do that? Do I need to put the raw turnips next to the embers or on top of them, or what?
Ps: I'm new to the forums and relatively new to the game (got it on June, 30th). Is there a place to introduce oneself and/or a list where all the already proposed suggestions/ideas for the game go? Because I don't want to post an idea that already has been thrown out there, but I don#t have time to check all 107 topics.
Edit: Typos. :P

Welcome!
If you'd like to write couple of lines about how did you discover the game, you can do it in the pinned topic in the section General.
And if you'd like to write a bit more about yourself, please go ahead and open a thread for introducing oneself. Maybe in section Off-topipc. Years years ago we had such a thread where people told about their background and real-life activities.

Sami has a brief summary of his ideas
here.
Fos user-posted suggestions at the moment there is just the forum section Suggestions. You can try to search the forums with some of the keywords you have in mind. But it is not a problem to re-mention ideas which are already mentioned. If you do it in a polite way, it is OK, as we understand that people seldom have time to browse through all the topics.
ps. sorry for not answering your cooking questions - I leave it to the players, as I'm sure we have a bunch of people whom can do it when they have time and attention for this topic.

1 - You are doing it right. You can pour the mushrooms from the pot into another container.
2 - They can be used from inside a container.
3 - I've heard mixed reports, but from my own experience no they won;t be safe. I've had an interesting week once in the game after eating a whole pot of Noadi soup.
4 - IIRC Turnips can be boiled by themselves using the boil / herbal beverages command. Every cooking is done via a menu command.

Thanks for that info.
I tired to use some black ear mushrooms which I had boiled in a recipe with mushrooms, but it didn't work. I was assuming that this was, because in the pot they possibly didn't count as mushrooms anymore, but retrospectively, it might have been because there wasn't enough of them. I'll give it another try.
As for the Noadi mushrooms: they don't lose their properties when boiled, so that was handled correctly. How do the effects of the Noadi mushrooms show? I've been very curious about that, but so far I was to timid to just try it out myself... :D
I've got to try that with the turnips sometime. Because my first character - who is already deceased, RIP Akum - was really in no man's land, with just a forester's village nearby and the didn't even have a shop. It was impossible to get a pot for months, until I had figured out the game a bit better and dare to go on journeys further than the surrounding screen on the overview map. There were enough turnips on their field, though, so it would have been pretty handy to nick and cook some of them, if the fishing didn't yield enough food again.
Sorry if i was rambling.
EDIT: I think I misunderstood the wiki entry. They didn't mention a pot, so I just assumed I didn't need one.
But: In the wiki it says that you can cook the turnips with just the embers and no fire needed. In the boil game menu it says that you need raw ingredients and water and a pot and fire. So is the wiki telling bullsh*t or is it talking about the embers of a previously heated fireplace?)
Because I just tried it with the embers of a camp fire and it didn't work...
Ashery - July 13, 2012 08:48 AM (GMT)
A fireplace is the only location where embers will form after a fire goes out. The embers will satisfy the "Fire" requirement for (at least) most recipes, iirc, but I could be mistaken with respect to some recipes.

You're aware you can eat them raw, right? Though they aren't very filling that way.
I've always been slightly annoyed that turnips can't be roasted, actually. I'm absolutely clueless about modding but I think I'm going to have to sit down at some point and make that happen.
Rain - July 14, 2012 12:08 AM (GMT)
IIRC it was once an option but was phased out when we got the new cooking system (modding etc). I can make you a quickie entry for roasting turnips, but it won't actually have any real effect other than to probably make them rot much much faster.
| CODE |
.Roasted Turnips. *COOKERY* \10\ /20/ :148: {Turnip*} #1# [remove] [roast]
|
Slap that in cookery_glossary.txt, maybe in the vegetable subsection.
Might also want to try and use graphic 114 (instead of 148) to have a turnip icon, but I am not sure if that will work.
GathersIngredients - July 15, 2012 07:56 AM (GMT)
I didn't know that you could eat turnips raw, but I guess it makes sense. They are listed under "food", after all. (Still, so is raw fish, too, and you can't eat that unless REALLY hungry, and then the character STILL complains about it tasting awful. Picky, picky. :D )
I read that you could cook turnip again even when they were already cooked, and thus stop them from spoiling, that's why I wanted to do it.
But by now, I have a nice cool cellar to store them in, so I shouldn't have that spoilage problem anyways, for the coming months. ;)
Also, I tried out the cooking of some meat soup with bearpaw mushrooms in it. Although the recipe I had in the cookery file used "boil" on the mushrooms, the resulting soup was still poisonous.
So, indeed, one has to blanch them first, and then use them in the recipe. =(
That is annoying, because it takes more time like that. On the other hand, it's only logical, because where - if not into the water used for boiling - should the poison from the mushrooms go?
