I can kind of see how it fits the mentality of the game and the rogue-like tradition, but really after so many years of playing it remains just an absolute pain that you can not go back to a prior decision during game creation.

Only the very initial choices are reversible - name, tribe, season iirc. I'm talking about the whole process - You really should be able to go from the location selection at the end all the way back to name if you want.
