Title: Do Animals Steal Food?

I've noticed some food missing a couple of times now and wanted to ask about the manner of it disappearing. I have the area in front of my cabin fenced in, with my cellar being in inside the fence. I have a dog, whom I let run freely in the fenced in yard when I don't need to have him leashed. I managed to catch a reindeer in a trap, brought the meat home and put it in my cellar while I prepared cords for smoking. There were 164 cuts of meat. After prepping enough cords it was late and I was tired, so I decided to sleep and start smoking in the morning. So next morning I got up to start smoking it, and only 158 cuts of meat were accounted for. So... where are the remaining 6 cuts? Bad dog?
It happened once before where I had a bunch of perches I had caught. I set them on the ground with the intent of making soup out of them when I got back from checking my traps. I got back and found significantly fewer perches than I thought I had, though maybe my mind was playing tricks on me. Then my dog barked... hmm...
This only seems to happen with uncooked meat/fish, nothing cooked has gone missing.

to answer your question, yes, and a few betas ago they'd gobble entire stacks. i distinctly remember a fox who ate an entire bear.

Spoiled food supposedly keeps animals from eating your food but im not really sure if this is true though. Sometime ago i checked my fox traps and all the food was spoiled yet a bear was wandering around the traps and didnt seem to be interested in going away either, even after waiting for a few hours.

Interesting, I would have thought that spoiled meat would actually draw more predators since it has a stronger smell...
I keep waiting for a bear or a wolf pack to show up when I kill a reindeer...

Good to know, looks like I'll either have to build a separate pen for the dog or stop leaving my uncooked food where he can get to it.
Maybe the bear eating fox was a mega-mutant-alien fox?

Crazy, isn't it, how this game can get your heart rate up? I've had two characters lucky enough to have bears stumble into their trap fences...and then crawl out again, so the character would find this bear crawling pathetically around the area of the trap fence. It wasn't enough to do them in, but it apparently incapacitated them enough that they couldn't effectively fight back and both characters got their bear fur outfits without even a scratch!
Regarding the original topic, does anyone know if "companions" will steal your things if you leave them lying around?

Hehe i agree. Thats why i love this game. As far as companions go, if you send them away, there's a chance they will steal items from you. Sometimes they'll walk away but return a few hours later and steal something from you, sending them away is pointless as they dont leave without taking something. One companion traveled back to my house just to steal a net, so i tracked him down and killed him and took my net back, hehe.
