Title: Subcribe To Urw News
erkka - February 19, 2012 06:03 PM (GMT)
Would you like to get an e-mail notification whenever a new UrW version is out?
try
Enormous Elk website - it is the very first draft, and is under construction. But the newsletter works, so if you are interested go subscribe it.
Actually, it would be nice to get a handful of first users from the forums, and when we are confident that it is running with no problems, we are ready to announce it for the wider public.

Oops. It seems that I have messed up something while working with the site styles and themes... After you press subscribe it should display instructions saying that you'll receive a confirmation e-mail. To me it seems that it still sends the message, asking you to confirm your subscribtion.
Isgaroth, did you get a confirmation e-mail?
Isgaroth - February 19, 2012 07:44 PM (GMT)
Yes, on both my Gmail and Hotmail (even if under Junk in this one) accounts.
erkka - February 19, 2012 07:51 PM (GMT)
OK.
Do you mean than in gmail you got the confirmation mail in your inbox, and for some reason the same mail was also in your hotmail junk folder? That goes beyond my understading, I always thought that gmail and hotmail aren't connected. Well, the newsletter administration panel shows you subscibed with your gmail account, so I hope it is fine.
I try to fix it so that after subriciption it would clearly display a message informing the user to check e-mail for confirmation.

Hmm, good thing I checked back here.
When I subscribed, I didn't get any messages about a confirmation email (or maybe I just missed it?) and closed the window. Just checked hotmail now, and the confirmation was in the junk folder.

No wait, I registered both my Gmail and Hotmail e-mail addresses and in both I received the confirmation e-mail, I did it just for testing the system.
erkka - February 19, 2012 08:38 PM (GMT)
Now it also should display a message after the user has pressed the subscribe button.
but I don't know yet what I can do to help Hotmail to recognize our mail as not junk.
BobZombie - February 19, 2012 08:49 PM (GMT)
Subscribed!
And got the message.
No worries about the junk.
This happens with 90% of the forums/newsletters.
Maybe just add "if you get a confirmation check your spam-filter" or something like that.
+really nice video! :D

Thats because hotmail is just a big junk folder :)
All done, can confirm that gmail being smart enough and keeps the reg email in inbox.
Crisamie - February 19, 2012 10:31 PM (GMT)
Done, got confirmation email to my inbox, not spam folder
darkover - February 20, 2012 09:22 AM (GMT)
Done.
I got the email in my inbox. (I use yahoo mail)
For testing, is there a way to unsubscribe already implemented?

A good question!
I sent a simple test letter, which should have an unsubcribe link in it.
Altough I'm not sure if it really works - at least when I tried the link,
it asked if I want to remove Dark_Art from the newsletter...
so, please, if you get the test mail, try to click the unsubcribe link to see if it asks to remove your address. If not, I try to take a closer look at this late in the evening.

I follow the link. The page ask me to remove a mail that isn´t mine.

I supose I see the mail of Dark_Art instead of mine
I haven´t clicked the unsucribe button.
erkka - February 20, 2012 12:09 PM (GMT)
I did some instant google and found a possible solution.
I sent a second test, please try the unsubcribe link in it.
darkover - February 20, 2012 12:10 PM (GMT)
I have recived the second test mail. This takes me to de correct unsubscribe page.
When I click the unsubscribe button, page tells me:
[my email] was unsubscribed from the Enormous Elk newsletter mailing list.

OK, I'm glad that the problem got solved.

Just to be sure - did it tell you literally "[my email] was unsubcribed ..." or did it correctly show your e-mail address instead of [my email] ?
I just tried with my own e-mail account, the unsubcribe link worked correctly, and in the confirmation page it showed my real e-mail address instead of [my email]

Sorry. It shows correctly my email address, as happen to you.
I have the habit of not writing e-mail addresses on the web. I did not realize my previous post was unclear.
Crisamie - February 20, 2012 01:09 PM (GMT)
Worked fine for me as well, though I canceled the action instead of actually unsubscribing
Elegant Caveman - February 20, 2012 01:17 PM (GMT)
Just tested it, and seems to be working fine now.
Like darkover, the first unsubscribe link asked me if I wanted to unsubscribe from an address that wasn't mine. The second link worked fine.
I unsubscribed and resubscribed; the message that tells you to check your email for confirmation when you subscribe stands out nicely.
The confirmation also didn't go to my junk mail this time. I had actually forgotten to mark the last one as "not junk", so it seems something has changed. The initial confirmation I received was still in the junk folder, but the new one (as well as the two test messages that were sent) all ended up in my inbox correctly. Hotmail is strange... <_<

That's fine. I just wanted to be sure, because in my first tests it failed to parse some of the tags. So it could display for example "[topic]" instead of the actual topic of the newsletter. But now that seems to be working also.

OK. It is possible to configure how the notifications are displayed. At first the problem was that I hadn't realized that I still have to display the notifications *somewhere*, ie. I had forgotten to include the notifications in the web-page template... So, all the layout, the looks and feels of the page are still under construction. I'm not yet myself satisfied with it, but it might take some time until I decide about the basic structure of the page. Ideas and suggestions are welcome, but it might be better to open a new topic for that.

Well, what I changed in the newsletter configuration was just a couple of purely techical things. But maybe Hotmail is detecting the way the message was sent... Oh well, anyhow, the way it works now is OK until we get hundreds of subscribers. Before that I have time to contact the newsletter module developers, to see if they can sort out the bug with faulty unsubscribe links.
erkka - March 17, 2012 03:39 PM (GMT)
dear test group of enormous elk newsletter,
I got a bug-fix patch from the developers of the newsletter module. And to test it, I sent yet another test mail - but the feedback I have got, makes me puzzled. What about the rest of you, did you get the newsletter mail and if so, did it come with a correct unsubrcibe link?
-Erkka
darkover - March 17, 2012 10:02 PM (GMT)
The unsubscribe link in both emails, bring me to the unsubscribe page. That page show correctly my e-mail.
