This ship was built on an experimental design that incorporated 'Intergalactic Warp Drive' or I-Warp Drive. Unfortunately, there was only enough fuel for one Intergalactic trip, meaning that if it was activated, there would be no way of getting home. On the Arrow's maiden voyage, it was jump by Orion Pirates. The crew managed to fight them off but were weakened and had to seek refuge in hostile Tholian space.
The Tholians objected and tried to sieze the Arrow as compensation. Because the ship had been damaged in the firefight with the Orions, the crew decided to activate the I-Warp which sent them to Ursa Minor Dwarf Galaxy, 215,000 Light Years from home (The Milky Way is only 90,000ly across). The only fuel they had was for the conventional warp drive, and that would take them 141.8205 years to get home at warp 9.
