V. WHY USING ART WITHOUT PERMISSION IS WRONGArt theft is not just something the people at the Tate or Louvre galleries are worried about, it is somethign that happens
all the time on the Internet.
Internet Art TheftBilly is browing around a site and sees a beautiful drawing. He thinks, 'What a wonderful drawing! I will take it and use it on my site!' and so he saves the image and takes it away.
Billy has just
stolen some artwork!
Not only that, but he intends to use it elsewhere! He never asked the creator. How is the artist going to feel when he/she finds out Billy has stolen the work they spent so long creating? Upset. Angry. Frustrated.
A lot of artists who have their work stolen speak a different language to those who have stolen their work so have no way of even telling the thief to take their work down. They can't e-mail the thief's webhost either, because again, they don't know their language! So to stop people stealing, the artists shut down their sites and stop drawing.
All they wanted was to let people enjoy the art they had spent so long creating, be it drawings, paintings, CG work, photography or writings. Now they cannot share those things because of the fear that they will be stolen.
What Can I Do To Help?First of all, make sure any sites you own don't have stolen artwork on them. This includes artwork in your avatars and signatures on forums.
Secondly, you could display a banner or text link to
http://www3.to/ofp/, which is the Online FanArt Protection site. Help spread the message to the masses to help people understand not to steal artwork.
Third, if you see someone on a forum with stolen artwork in their avatar or signature, send them a polite message explaining that stealing art is wrong and that they should remove the stolen items and ask permission from the creator to use them. The same thing applies if you see a website using stolen art. Give them a polite e-mail, or leave a message in the guestbook. Send them a link to OFP too. Link to this page even!
