welcome to the posting rules,
1. How to Post!
This is something that any roleplayer should pick up upon pretty easily. To make a good roleplay, we have threads and different situations that characters react to. Board-wide plots and plots between a group – or even a pair – of characters make the whole board interesting. How do you do this?
A ) Each character has to be interesting. Their actions and reactions need to be believable. The characters make the world here, so don’t just have them say or do something to be ‘edgy.’ The key word here is ‘believable.’ B ) The post length is important, as is the quality of the writing. The MINIMUM length of a post should be about 300 words. We obviously don’t have a maximum. Single sentence replies are ridiculously annoying. Try to match the posting length of the person you’re roleplaying with, just to be respectful to them. C ) Write something that someone else can reply to. Write speech, write about the scenery, how your character moves, or something else physical… basically, something that adds to the thread. Writing a thousand words is impressive, but there have been a few that I’ve seen that have literally only one sentence that the other player can really respond to. It’s daft. D ) PLEASE POST IN THIRD PERSON, PAST TENSE. Oh, yes. We don’t want to see this:
QUOTE
As I walk through the city, I see the wind brushing through the tall grass. It’s all really well kept, and as I watch, I smile. I see my friend, Peter, in the distance, so I run over to him and say ‘hello’.
Ah. Not good. This is what we want:
QUOTE
John walked through the city, hands in pockets. Smiling, he watched the long grasses sway, the breeze just enough to ruffle his hair even more. Ooh! Is that…? A slight frown disappeared quickly as the young man recognised his friend, Peter, at the end of the path. Grinning, John started running, skidding to a halt as he reached the other man. “Oi, you! Decided to ignore me, eh?”
Much better! See what we’re after? 2. Spelling and Grammar!
Please check all of your spelling and grammar! I know everyone makes mistakes, and that’s fine, but there’s no excuse to abuse the English language! Ahem. Sorry. But in all seriousness, Microsoft Word is there for a reason. (Or the Mac version of something similar. Sorry, I’m a PC girl.) As well as checking how long your post is, it will be able to tell you if you make any mistakes. I can’t stand ‘l33t sp34k’ or whatever it is. So that’s not allowed ANYWHERE. In the out-of-character forums, you can use ‘lol’ and ‘roflcopter’ as much as you like… you know, the MSN and Yahoo chatty stuff. That’s fine. In roleplaying posts… no. We’ll PM you and end up deleting your post. Ack.
3. What’s in the Posts!
There is to be no racism, sexism, or any such bullying content in any of our posts. Of course, some of the characters will be rude and vicious, but there is no need to carry it out into our OOC boards or the CBox, and you may not use it as an excuse to upset other members. It’s a bannable offence. Don’t do it.
3. Sex and Swearing!
I’ll do the swearing thing first. Fair enough, most people swear. Saying that, you don’t need to swear with every other word. Your character can swear in speech or thoughts, but otherwise try not to, eh? Great.
Now, sex… if you’re going to write it, well, we need a warning. A lot of people don’t want to read smut, remember? Anyway, if that’s what you want to do, please put a ‘!’ in the thread title. If you need a member of staff to do it for you, just PM one of us, no problem at all. Easy.
4. Godmoding!
I HATE people who play god with other people’s characters. Basically, you can’t force anyone else’s characters to do anything. This is easier to explain with examples.
A ) Speech. If player 1 has their character say ‘hello,’ they can’t say that player 2’s character also says ‘hello’. You have to wait for the other player to decide what happens. Wrong: John grinned at Peter. “Are you alright?” Peter nodded, looking into the distance. Right: John grinned at Peter. “Are you alright?” Watching the other man intently, John hoped that his friend was happy with the news he had just been given.
B ) Fighting. If player 1’s character attacks player 2’s character, they can’t decide the outcome. You have to roleplay together to work out what happens – and remember, your character isn’t perfect. Lose every once in a while. It’s much more fun! Wrong: Angrily, John lunged for Peter, grabbing him by the back of the head and punching him. Peter howled in pain before falling to the fall. Right: Angrily, John lunged for Peter, grinding his teeth. This was the last straw. Reaching out to grab the back of his old friend’s head, John aimed a punch for the side of Peter’s jaw.
That should make sense. Right?
5. How to Kill!
To kill a character, you need an admin’s permission and (if it isn't your character) the permission of the other player. This also goes for a new regeneration if you happen to play a Time Lord: we need to update information about the characters if they're changing their physical appearance. Simple.
That’s about it! Remember: if you need anything, just PM me!
