Sitting in an out of the way corner, Rayven hid behind a large book. It wasn't as if she wasn't reading the book. She was. That didn't mean she couldn't also use it to hide behind. The reason she was hiding behind the book was that she wanted to be alone, and there was too much chance one of the girls she shared her dorm room with could walk in on her. And no-one really looked in the out of the way corners, so it was pretty safe that she wouldn't be disturbed.
The book was about charms. In her spare time she liked exercising her mind by reading about things that probably wouldn't be taught in the classroom, not until next year or so anyway. She'd found the book not far from where she sat now and the spine had be covered with dust, so she doubted that anyone had read it for a while. It was an interesting book, too. She wondered why it had been left here and forgotten, then shrugged. Oh well. At least it showed that here was a good stop for her to stay hidden, if the books weren't read very often. Smiling at the thought, she concentrated on the writing on the page.

"You know, if you were actually reading the book, your eyes would be moving," Nimah commented as she walked past, hair piled on top of her head. She swore as her Ravenclaw tie, undone as usual, slipped off and landed on the floor, along with the attatched 'Head Girl' badge. Dumping her stchel on the table by which the girl was sitting, Niamh retrieved her tie and slung it around her neck once more.

She looked at the book the girl was reading. Something about charms, apparently. She leant closer. "You're reading my book!" Nimah said accusingly. "The one I was going to get right now!"

Rayven gave a startled 'Meep' when she heard someone's voice behind her. Looking up quickly, she saw it was a seventh-year Ravenclaw girl. When the older girl's tie fell on the floor, Rayven was startled to see the 'Head Girl' badge attatched to it. The girl didn't look like a Head Girl. Maybe it was that fact that her black hair was piled ontop of her head or maybe it was the girl's size. She had to be atleast four inches shorter than Rayven.
When the girl accused her of read her book, Rayven blinked, looked at the book, then looked at the girl. "Are you sure? It's spine was all dusty and none of the books here look like they've been touched in a while." She was rather pleased that her voice wasn't timid. Maybe she was getting over her shyness. She frowned. "You're a seventh-year, right? This book has to be atleast two years below your level. Why do you want to read it?" Her frown deepened slightly. Had she mixed up what level the book was? Was she really reading seventh-year stuff. She looked down at the book again. It didn't look like something a seventh-year would want to read, and if it was this girl's level, shouldn't Rayven be unable to understand it? She looked at the girl again. "Are you really sure you want to read this book?"

"I want to read whatever book I want to read," Nimah replied with a sniff. "I have NEWTS coming up this year, you know, so I want to do a bit of revision. It just so happens that you are holding the book I am revising with at this present time." She sat down at the table. "So I guess I'll just have to wait for it, won't I?"

Waiting for the girl to respond, Niamh pulled the tie and clips out of her hair and began to plait it, humming a Muggle song.

Rayven considered the older girl for a moment, then sighed softly and put the book in front of her. "If you need to do revision, read it then. I was just reading it for fun." Standing, she went over to the other books, looking for another one to read. Wiping the dust off the spine of one book, she saw it was a book about Ancient Runes, so she pulled it out. It was about the same size as the book about charms and when she dropped onto the table, a cloud of dust rose up. Coughing, she faned the dust away and sat down. She looked over at the older girl. "You can do your revision now. My name's Rayven, by the way."

Niamh eyed the book as she plaited her hair. "You can read it - I don't have any classes now... I can wait as long as I want, or you want to take..."

She didn't even want the book that much - just seeing the girl there gave her another opportunity to stir up trouble. "And I'm Niamh," she said, drawing out the 'ee' so the other girl wouldn't forget. "Ravenclaw, seventh year, head girl..." she rolled her blue eyes, bragging slightly. She liked to do that.

Deciding the girl wasn't going to read the book, Niamh finished off her plait and picked up the book, flicking open the front page and reading the published date. 1897, it seemed. Oh well, authentic.

Rayven smiled softly. "Nice to meet you Niamh." Opening her book, she began to read. She soon forgot about the other girl, and everything else for that matter. Her focus was completely on the words written on the page in front of her.

"Yes, most people say that," Niamh replied, her eyes skimming over the first page. "I must have an elegant charm, don't you agree?" She thrust out her rather large chest as if to emphasise the point, and burrowed deeper into the chair. "At least, my boyfriend Corbin thinks so," she sniffed.

Rayven gave a 'hmm', and turned the page. As often happened when she was concentrating on something, she forgot the world around her. She probably wouldn't have even blinked if Niamh had yelled at the top of her lungs, or said that she was a serial killer and Rayven was her next victim. She eyes travelled down the page, the fixed on one charm about half-way down the page. Her curiousity arose and she read the charm over a few times, just to make sure she would remember it.

Niamh huffed at the less than adequate reply and looked back at the book, after taking a fleeting glance at the other girl. She didn't seem to care in the slightest - well, that wasn't good enough, was it? The girl stood up, dusting imaginary bits of... something off her Nirvana T-shirt - yes, the one she was wearing with a tie, so teachers couldn't tell her off for not being in uniform - and picked up her bag. "Good day to you then, Rayven. I can see when I'm not needed."

Rayven gave another 'hmm', then, fasinated by the charm she'd just read, picked up her wand, flicked it and said "Loomous Vantaisy" rather sharply. There was a loud sound and a ball of sparking yellow light shot from the end of her wand, hitting the opposite bookshelf. There was a crackling sound, then the yellow ball disappeared, leaving a faint sulfurous smell in the air. Rayven frowned thoughtfully. "I wonder if it was supposed to do that." She nudged her glasses back in place, which had somehow slid down to rest on the tip of her nose, and looked over at a startled-looking Niamh. "Oh, sorry about that. I've got to remember not to experiment with these things when there are people next to, especially without warning them."

Niamh raised her eyebrows as the jet of yellow light shot across the room. "That was odd," she commented, and as the girl said something about the real use of the spell, she shook her head. "It's supposed to create something akin to the sun, but in a minature for and... not as hot." She looked at the cover of the book - 4th year magic. "A little too advanced for that, I believe..."

The girl shrugged. "But if you think you can perform thoses kind of charms, then go for it. I'm not going to stop you."

Rayven smiled at the older girl. "I'm glad that didn't scare you, or singe anything." She frowned down at the book. "Maybe I didn't flick my wand right. That always seems to be the problem." Shaking her head, she read the charm over again, concentrating on the wand movement. Seeing where she'd gone wrong, she tried it again. This time, the ball of yellow light didn't shoot from the tip of her wand, but did what it was supposed to do and hung about a foot above it. Pleased, Rayven grinned and disengaged the charm. She always loved it when a spell went right. Looking down at her watch, she hurriedly replace the book and picked up her bag. "It was nice meeting you Niamh. I have to go. I have class. Bye." Turning, she hurried away.

-Rod-

Like a beaming child in possession of a lollipop, Rod burst onto the scene. Or rather, he entered the library with a trademark Eachann expression on his face.

Scanning the shelves ranging from pristine to dusty, he approached one of them and removed a transfiguration book. The rest of the tomes on the shelf keeled over sideways with a soft 'thump'. "Transfigura Elstridartus" read the cover. Satisfied, the boy stuck a goosefeather quill between the pages and transported it to the librarian's desk.

Daphne entered the library. She accidentally bumped a boy as she passed the librarian's desk. His book fell off the desktop with a thud. It was a rather substantial tome. Bending down, she picked it up and handed it to the boy, ruffling his hair and saying distractedly, "There you go."
She walked quickly between the rows and rows of books. Daph spotted Niamh seated in one of the corrals and walked over.
"Niamh!" Daph wasn't her usual, indifferent self, and it showed in the worry clouding her voice. "Look at this." She thrust a piece of parchment to her, and pulled up a chair for herself, placing her head in her hands...
