| QUOTE (Munk @ Jun 24 2010, 10:45 AM) | [[Made a bot ]]
S.O.P.H.I.E
“I tell you the thing just came at me, screeching about hugs and love and shit. It grabbed me and squeezed me ‘til thought my eyes’d pop.”
The SOPHIE model robot was an early design by the Animatics Toy Industry and was one of the few robots able commercially as a children toys. It was designed with the lonely child in mind, a toy that could keep a young child busy while the parents were away. It worked on the same basic principles as other children’s toys of the time. The toy would be given to the child and the parent could work or play freely as they wish.
The robot was surprisingly advanced for a child’s toy, capable of moving on it’s own and speaking in generic phrases common to child’s toys of the time. It would commonly say “I love you” and “Can I have a hug?” It would use the strong pneumatics in it’s arms to hug the child gently when asked. The robots were also provided with a safety program. For example, SOPHIE would stop the child if they were going to fall down stairs or walk into the street. Aside from some technical issues in the original designs the SOPHIE model sold very well.
They were designed to be play things and as such are designed for safety, with a spherical head and rounded body. They have various spots on their chassis’ for clothes or wig to be attached to customize the SOPHIE-bot to the individual child; so every one you find will most likely look different. Their skin is still a metallic silver color, with round lights for eyes and a small speaker in the back of their necks to use phrases. They are otherwise featureless and smooth, with thinly jointed and round limbs. They stand at an even four-feet tall.
The problem was that their programming did not hold up to the years in the Wastelands. They’ve gone severely haywire and can be heard spouting random phrases for no real reason. When they see a human being they will approach, holding they’re arms out and asking for a hug. If the human obliges they will find themselves crushed under the surprisingly high pressure of the pneumatics in the robot’s arms. The worst thing however is that the robot will attempt to kidnap any child it sees, taking the child away so that they can play together. Sometimes children will follow the small robot willingly, only to be horrified when their new “friend” refuses to let them leave. SOPHIE will do everything in it’s power to “protect” a child it kidnaps.
Armament: Strong pneumatic arms capable of causing internal injuries but not much else.
Defense: Nothing to speak of. They can stand up to a little more trouble than a small child could dish out. |
And the Award for Creepiest Robot On the Site goes to Munk.

Fuel-tech 300
C'mon man! Let's go Feul-tech tippin'
A simple specialty robot that came into vogue shortly after the creation of the first miniturized vacuum tube, this little guy was out of date by the time of the war. A very simple, semi-intelligent robot, the Fuel-tech was designed to conveniently replace gas station attendants everywhere, with a built in fuel storage and a large pump funtioning as it's only appendage. A boxy looking robot with small clunky legs, and a shiny square body, these slow moving fellows are easily recognizable. A single camera is mounted on the top of it's form, and is designed to circle in full 180 degrees, on the lookout for customers and cars to fill. The resource shortages, and subsequent wars, sent most of these guys into the landfill, although a few remained, servicing what was left of the gas-based infistructure in the US. Designed to be maintained daily, they contain ports for lubrication and a removable back plate for access to it's brains and input of prices and other information, most of these waist-height robots still have functioning bodies, but their programming?
Not so much. Luckily, the worst they're likely to do is dump whats left of their tank onto you, or demand you insert some bills. And if they're really getting in the way, grab some friends and it's actually quite easy to simply tip them over and watch them struggle to right themselves. Those that remain are mainly malfunctioning, and it can be rather comedic to watch one attempt to top off rows of rusted cars, or voiclessly demand payment from maniquenns and other human-like shapes.
Armament: I guess they could ram you, but they only really get going up to a brisk walking pace. They might put their pump to use, although there's not much that'll do other then stain your clothing.
Defense: A sturdy metal casing is designed to protect it's small tank, although both it's single 'eye' and two clunky 'legs' are weak points.

Here's an idea, how about we put example RPs next to each robot/creature to help people get a better idea on how to use them. For example: Power Robot- Smoke on the Water-post 2 S.O.P.H.I.E- The Good Doctor-posts 4-6 There might be some better examples but I can't be bothered reading 1000+ RPs to be sure.

((New Version)) Walter the Welder 2000Walter the Welder 2000 is a robot that was designed to help put together car's in factory's across the Southern United States. After the war started with China, it was re purposed with a better blowtorch to weld together tanks, airplanes and jeeps for the U.S Military. It was designed around forty-five years before the Great War destroyed the world, it was built with a unique innovation. It was giving a set of legs so it can move around the factory, going to where it needs to go; instead of staying in one spot. This was so it could replace human workers that's shift were up, or to replace the spot of one that was hurt on the job. After the war most likely destroyed there factory's that they were used out, the Walter the Welder 2000 programming slowly slipped into malfunctions. The first is there need to exit there home factory, and wander the Wastes near it. The second is to basically weld a lot of metal objects together. For example, if they see someone using Metal armor; they'll clank on over to him and attempt to weld the metal armor to the person himself. Or, if they see a metal wall for a settlement; attempt to weld that. All in all, they have an ostrich-type look about them. Considering that they are basically just this with legs, its easy to see why some might call it a "Welding Ostrich". It stands at around five feet tall, and maybe two feet wide. It moves slowly, with a lurching gate that makes it seem that it will always fall over walking over the loose sands of the waste. Also, there blowtorch that they use for defense can only travel directly in front of them. An agile person would be able to easily run around to the back of the robot and disable it from there. However, most settlements that need skilled welders often capture these Welding robots and reprogram them to something akin to there former jobs at welding cars, tanks or airplanes. Offense: Powerful blowtorch, can only attack someone directly ahead of them. Defense: Thick metal casing to protect self from heat of high-temperature welding, able to withstand several small caliber bullets before deactivation.

FH.PFMW (FH Betsy) -Part of the Texas FH Rover Machine Factorum-
'Testing on FH.PFMW was successful, the neural wiring was corrected and though my colleagues hold the robot in little importance, I feel that this robot will begin our plight to perfect the best military weapon in use by the American Armed Forces'
Introduction
With the FHRover Machine Factorum completed, the team set out to build the perfect robot, the next series will include some of their most average, most interesting, most deadly and most banal of creations. The engineers and technicians, mostly working on loan from RobCo, all began on their simplest robot, affectionately named FH Betsy or the FH.PFMW that's, Force Halt. Platform For Mobile Weaponry.
The machine
This 'robot' is armed with a basic self sufficient solar charged stun gun, designed for passing over harsh terrain to conduct 'electrical assassination' upon enemy Chinese military leaders. Unfortunately, it's awkward size (roughly that of a basket ball plus a massive arm holding a stun gun type weapon and a big glowing eye on top) and annoying drone exited from the anti-gravity mechanism made it a poor recon or assassin weapon. This robot was never mass produced because of this however, some of the more aggressive characters (those who have had their inhibitors broken) can cause some harm, fortunateley, they are only lightly armoured but do cause a small explosion when obliterated. One is therefore advised to stand at least fifty yards back to remove chance of explosive shock and out stand the range of the weaponry.

((Zilabus helped me out on this one. We had a little PM talk all about this kind of stuff.))
"Daddy long legs"
Not it's real 'factory' name, of course, but instead a common nickname for this robot and it's brother and sister models. With a real name as goofy as the "Sentritron", can you blame people for giving it a nickname? With three rather long, spider like legs ending in clunky 'pads' supporting the robot's spherical body, the nickname is definately an appropriate one. Designed to replace security guards where possible, and help strengthen security when it wasn't. Luckily for you or me, without authorities to run to, Daddy Long Legs do little more then slowly make their way about on their clunky three legs and observe things. They can still cause quite a bit of trouble though, if they spot you at an inoppourtune time. It isn't enjoyable trying to find the source of that ridiculously loud siren, especially when it tries to avoid you after activating it. Luckily, by now, most of them have malfunctioned or quit following their original programing, instead randomly roaming and investigating as they please.
Offensive: Loud, bright, noticable sirens. Self destruct.
Defensive: Thin metal plating. Legs are key targets.

((Need more 'bots.))
Medi-bot
This robot, designed at great expense and research, was used in pre-war hospitals as a general assistant to doctors. They would carry tools, help with operations and even do some menial tasks on their own. Most were designed with a specific project in mind and were loaded with state-of-the art medical data. Of course, that state-of-the-art was around 200 years ago and there's no telling how much of their data survived to this day.
Medi-bots, when found, look like big white boxes with a small panel and screen on the front. This screen will display whatever information the doctor, nurse or patients needs. Small panels on the side slide down to reveal wiry arms that pop out, holding whatever tool the doctor may need. The robots, being designed for use on the smooth linoleum floors of a hospital, have tracks underneath that are completely unsuitable for most outdoor terrain and you're unlikely to simply find them wandering the dunes. Most likely, you'll find them in ruins or less likely, in local post-war clinics brought there by tech-savvy wasteland doctors.
Sometimes, but much more rarely, Medi-bots were given very advanced programming that allowed them to operate independently as a doctor themselves, providing surgery, simple wound healing and information on common injuries and illnesses. If you find one of these bots you may want to speak with it or avoid it all together.
Either way, when encountering one that's remained untouched, you have about a fifty-fifty chance of having your wounds healed with a syringe and careful robot hand or having a few more given to you by a bone-saw.
Offensive: All those scary, sharp tools that doctor's cut you with; the knowledge it has of human anatomy is handing when it's chopping you up.
Defensive: Boxy and surprisingly tough.

((Double post! Now with a dash of silly robot!))
DEWEY .006
Found often roaming the ruins of pre-war libraries but occasionally seen collecting books around the wasteland. Deweys, as they were known, were finders, delivers and organizers of all things written. Their programming seeks out knowledge wherever it lurks and on whatever scrap of paper it happens to be on. Mostly they just pick up junk: old flyers, traveler's notes, or books too burnt or worn to be read. Occasionally though, they'll pick up something really worth reading.
When they pick up a book, they'll store it inside their inner compartment. They tend to look like big walking mailboxes with small feet beneath that makes them lumber forward with an awkward waddle. Comical almost. Most denizens don't even bother with them at all, given the literacy rates in the Wastes and the fact that folks don't care if they can get twenty percent of their home insurance if they sign up before December 1st, 2077. So many times, you'll see these robots wandering unharmed, undisturbed.
They don't really have a goal beyond doing as their programming states. "Collect and store information."
For these reasons however, people interested in pre-war America find them extremely valuable and fascinating despite filled with, what looks to the average Waster, fancy toilet paper. Sometimes when these robots discover that their compartments are full, they seek out a safe place to store the information they've collected. This can be anywhere from a cave to an abandoned building but either way, expect it to be packed and piled with books and papers.
Offensive: Nothing to really speak of.
Defensive: They can chuck a mean hardback when in immediate danger but mostly, they just try to pathetically lumber away.

R.W.U
The Recycling Work Unit or RWU is a small robot slightly over five foot in height and four and a half foot in width and breadth. The body of the machine looks like a small oven with an opening compartment at the front and another one underneath. It sports two arms with three talons on each dexterity point and has a similar amount of manoeuvrability to that of a human arm. Below the body are two tank treads that can be boosted up on pneumatic pistons to add an extra two foot for navigating bad terrain and also to allow for it's main function [explained later]. On top of the body is a television like box about twenty centimetres in height, in actual fact this part is a sensory appendage to survey the area and also to provide a friendly face for American citizens. On the eight-bit green and black display is a emote like face with a variety of different expressions programmed into the CPU. On top of that is a torch for lighting up the area while working in the dark. Each robot is powered primarily by a solar power but if this should fail, there is a single energy fuel cell charged at the centre of the machine to provide back up power until a human provides a new energy source, fixes the solar panel or changes the old cell for one of the four in the storage compartment attached to the back of the RWU.
Around four years before war broke out, a branch of Robco's robot design conglomerate based in recycling and waste disposal created the RWU. The intention was that, once the inevitable nuclear war broke out, the robots would begin to clean up debris and level ground for future communities to start their lives anew. Even before work broke out the Recycling Work Unit's were frittering about the streets of most major cities cleaning up rubbish and depositing it in waste allocation facilities. In fact the government liked the idea so much that a variant of the RWU, named the R.W.U 1.5 was drafted to enforce a no littering regime whereby anyone seen littering by one of the robots would be pursued until they were caught, then the robot would issue an electric shock from an outlet in one of the hands. Unfortunately war broke out before they could be mass produced and a mere two hundred were distributed to Texas.
To effectively dispose of the litter, the RWU would scrape up debris from the floor and add it to its frontal compartment, then when this was full, it would compress the waste into a block before carrying it to a waste allocation centre, tip or government open trash can. In the present day however, these machines are seen either wandering aimlessly, collecting rubbish and depositing it on the floor or simply powered down on the deserted roadside, with no one to fix them up.
Due to their funny design specifications, the robots are very find to find parts for, even harder to salvage however, the actual power supply is easy enough to keep running, it would be harder to fix up the tank treads and the sensory modules on the facial unit. One will also probably hear them coming before they see them, they were designed with a small speaker to provide an outlet for government propaganda, anti-littering slogans or songs picked up from local radio transmissions. Even if the songs aren't playing, the mechanical grating sound of "Keep out streets tidy," or even the crackle of static is a dead give away.
Presently many of these robots are deactivated or have been stripped bare by scavengers, however the University employs the usage of a few robots as pack mules and bin men, also the Louisiana Board has been known to have them reprogrammed to run ammunition to the front lines or even to clear mine fields with their all terrain tank tracks. The BoS do not use them openly however it is reckoned that they are the source of study for acolytes to the order.
Weapons:
Powerful claws (robot has no inclination to attack however)
Explosive if volatile fuel cell is hit or otherwise dislodged
Armour:
thin metal body
Weak points:
Un-armoured television like display
dangerous secondary powerful supply
_______
Hands up if you get the reference.
