MORE than 3000 aspiring entertainers are expected to be at Ascot racecourse this morning to audition for the Australian Idol TV series.

Among them will be four first-timers, including Belle Cass, 30, of Maylands, who is taking advantage of the age limit being extended by two years.

At the other end of the scale, three 16-year-olds � Alexis Kapoulitsas and Daniella Bernardini, of Stirling, and James Bell, of Ocean Reef, will also be eligible to audition for the first time for the Channel 10 show.

The four went through their paces yesterday in preparation for today's auditions in front of Australian Idol hosts James Matheson and Andrew G.

Each contestant will have only a few seconds to impress the judges and win through to the next round.

The best from today's crop will return for a second round of appraisals on Tuesday, before the judges head off to other major cities in their quest to find the nation's best singers.

While it may be his first Idol attempt, James is no stranger to the audition process. He has already appeared in TV ads and has starred in Channel 9's local drama Sleepover Club.

The Idol auditions will start at 8.30am today at Ascot, off Grandstand Rd.

Performers must be at least 16 or under 31 on June 30 this year.

For the first time, hopefuls can audition with an instrument. There will also be a $500 prize for the weirdest or wildest audition.

Australian Idol is expected to be screened in August.
