General What is Typing-Based RP? RP, or Role-Play, is when a person creates an account on an RPG (Role-Playing Game) and gives it a name, a personality, etc. In this case, the website you are on is a Typing-Based RPG, which means you type out your character's actions and interact with others through the keyboard. Read it on Wikipedia. What are the components of a good RP? A good RP has the following components. 1. It is written in the third person. Wrong:
Wrong:
Right:
2. It is written in past tense. Wrong:

Right:
3. It is descriptive and of a good length. The better your RP is, the more others know, and the better they will be able to RP a reply. This site was created not only to take a break from the real world, but to improve writing skills. 4. How wud u lik 2 reed a post lik ths? Try to keep your posts sentient and understandable. Use proper grammar, punctuation, capitilization and the like. The 'Spell Check' button with the tags up above works for some, and not for others. If it doesn not work for you, simply copy and paste your post into Microsoft Word or WordPerfect, or go online to such sites as www.spellcheck.com. We really appreciate good posts (and may even give you points for them), and posts that are written according to the laws of basic English are much more fun to read. What are avatars and signatures, and how do I get one? First of all, you'll want to hop on over to the Avatar Claim to claim your Played-By (the celebrity you'll want to portray your character). Your signature and avatar are a set of computer graphics featuring this person, and you can edit these by clicking on the 'My Controls' section at the top. What is godmodding, and can I do it? No, you absolutely cannot do it. Godmodding can occur during two seperate circumstances. 1. Your character is invincible and perfect, i.e. godmodding. Wrong:
Right:
Now, I'm not saying that you always get hit by spells. Everyone does sometimes, but not all the time. Try to keep your getting-hit-by-a-spell rate about 50/50. And be realistic. If you're a first year getting hexed by a seventh year, this rate is going to be quite higher than that. And if you're a seventh year getting attacked by a puny first-year, it's going to be a lot lower because you're more experienced. Also Right:
2. The second way to godmod is to control somebody else's character to your advantage. Wrong:
Right:
If the first instance happens to you, feel free to give them a reprimand and a link to the FAQ via PM, and continue to RP as if the godmodding had never happened. However, it is impossible to monitor all of it so please do not PM an administrator or a mod unless the perpetrator continues despite warnings. What is OOC, and how do I mark it? OOC stands for Out of Character, which is anything in your post that does not pertain to your RP. Normally we have an entire category for it (in fact, you're reading a topic in it right now) but sometimes occasions arise when you may need to add an OOC note in your post. There are many ways to signify OOC. ((This is a common way to signify OOC.)) [//OOC: This is a common way to signify OOC.] //This is a common way to signify OOC. OOC: This is a common way to signify OOC. You can use these formats or others, as long as it is clear that it is not part of your RP. Please do not post entirely OOC posts outside of the OOC forums. What are font attributes, and can I use them? Font attributes are tags such as bold, italics, underline, font, font size, color, supscript and superscript.
Usually, font attributes are welcome only in OOC forums. However, there are many RPers out there who use font, size or script as a trademark, so as long as it is used in moderation, that is okay. Please, no entire posts in bold, italics or underline. Bold and underline is for headings or announcements OOC, italics can be for thought, enunciating words or quoting another person. Font colors and outrageous sizes are unacceptable outside of OOC. Silent Castle Specific Who are the admins, and what do they do? The main administrators of this site are Holli, Moony, Padfoot, Lucius and Bean. They are apparent because +Their Names Have Plus Signs Before and After.+ We run the site, write and enforce the rules, keep the plot going, etc. We also occasionally RP. If you have any additional questions not found on this list, PM one of us and we might add it here. Help! I've accidentally registered without a first and last name! Don't worry, we won't bite your head off. Just PM one of the aforementioned admins and we'll change it for you. Why aren't I Sorted yet? There are many circumstances in which this may not be happening. 1. Have you completely filled out a Sorting Hat application? If not, we can't Sort you, as we have no idea what House you belong in. 2. If you've done Step One, have you posted it in the right place? If you haven't posted in the Sorting Hat forum then you can't be Sorted. Make sure you didn't make the mistake of posting it somewhere else, posted it in Accepted Applications, or posted it in a reply. 3. Have any of the admins been active lately? If the site is in a lull, it may simply mean that the admins are busy. We're teenagers just like you. We've got homework. We'll get to you. 4. It's possible we have merely overlooked your application by accident. If you've had your application up for a week and none of us have Sorted you yet, feel free to PM us a gentle reminder. Can I be part of the plot? You'll have to PM the people involved in the plot, and then the admins to recieve your permission. Make sure you have your place in the plot in mind. Can I have my own sub-plot? Sub-plots are smiled upon. It's a good way to interact with others without idly bumping into each other in the hallway. A sub-plot is an RP with a purpose. However, we don't want any drastic sub-plots, such as a death, a suicide, a kidnapping, or anything else of the nature without admin permission. Can my character be a different species or have a special ability? If we feel you are up to the task. If you feel as if it is essential to your character development to be an Animagus, a veela, a Metamorphagus, a wereanimal or anything else of the nature, PM one of the admins and we'll tell you what to do to apply. Thank you for reading the Silent Castle FAQ. If any of your questions are left unanswered, PM one of the admins. Thanks! --The Silent Castle Admin Team -------------------- ![]() |
