Title: SPM: RPG or not?

Carl Russ, III - June 12, 2006 07:35 PM (GMT)
I've read some about Super Paper Mario in Nintendo Power, but not much info was given. They said it's not suppose to be an RPG (In the same sense of the other PM games) but it's suppose to have "RPG"ish elements. Does anyone know just what Nintendo means by this? I know that little to no info has been given away about it, but I was just wondering if maybe someone could fill me in.

I think it means that you have multiple characters and may possibly carry items. Who knows.

Paratroopa - June 13, 2006 03:30 PM (GMT)
I think I read somewhere that it starts off very similarly to the other two Paper Mario games before changing into a platformer. So whether the RPG-ish elements are just bits of exploration in between levels, I don't know. Probably isn't, though.

What is certain is that it will be more of a platformer than anything, so no worries there.

From what I can tell it's going to replace the battle system with platformer elements and add more characters. from there on its a mystery

Mr. X - June 14, 2006 01:18 PM (GMT)
^Well, we just established that already. <_<

mariofan12 - June 16, 2006 01:44 AM (GMT)
I remember that Nintendo said that this was gonna be a new mario RPG, probably not though.

Hmm... what if it's a platformer kind of game... but it has boss battles in an RPGish style or something like that? Maybe that? Or perhaps the dungeons are simular to those found in RPGs.

Doopliss Boy - June 20, 2006 04:49 PM (GMT)
Maybe it would be like those RPG type battles in Kirby Superstar. That was cool.

Mr. X - June 20, 2006 07:40 PM (GMT)
But those battles (Kirby Superstar ones) weren't done right cuz it was kind of a joke. The other character attacked only once a turn but you could try to damage it as many times as you can in the time it gives you.

raydoit - June 21, 2006 05:43 AM (GMT)
so if this isn't an rpg...then maybe their gunna turn the paper mario series into a platformer and bring back the beloved smrpg lottss series!!! (wishful thinking)
if not are they gunna make a paper mario rpg also or are they scrappin the whole smrpg altogether?

Brino - June 21, 2006 05:46 AM (GMT)
Not. It says its a 2D sidescrolling platformer.

QUOTE
Super Paper Mario is, in fact, a side-scrolling platformer in the vein of the classic Mario titles but with the aesthetic qualities of the Paper Mario series. However, it's not just a 2D side-scroller. The game fuses elements of 2D and 3D gameplay together, shifting back and forth between dimensions. Watching the brief video for the game, you can get a pretty good idea of how it plays. The paper version of Mario runs to the right, stomping on koopas, punching bricks, collecting coins, and whatnot. However, you won't just be playing as Mario, it seems. Both Princess Peach and Bowser are shown as playable characters in the video. And in perhaps something of a nod to Nintendo's newest Mario title for the DS, the video also shows all characters getting severely gigantic, blowing through enemies and bricks with reckless abandon. Even more hysterical, the giant characters are actually versions of the original Super Mario Bros. sprites, blown up to epic proportions.

There is no SMRPG series. There have been Mario RPGs, there is a Paper Mario series and there is a small Mario & Luigi series. Based on that, PM3 proper or M&L3 seem more likely.

Who said a spin-off series couldn't have its own spin-off, right?

Shadow Master - June 24, 2006 06:43 PM (GMT)
Its weird when you think about it...a spin-off of a spin-off...

Zephyrus - June 26, 2006 12:48 AM (GMT)
I'm assuming that SPM is going to be much like the LoZ games in terms of exploration, item collection, and boss battles, if any.

Masamune - July 3, 2006 02:19 PM (GMT)
Super Paper Mario is a spinoff of Paper Mario which is a spinoff of Mario which is a spinoff of the original Donkey Kong Arcade.

Shadow Master - July 3, 2006 02:26 PM (GMT)
I think maybe Miyamoto had plans for Mario before he made him. *whoa!*

Maybe for the DK arcade, they couldn't come up with another character idea.
Cause I wouldn't really consider Mario a spin-off of the DK arcade game...Mario's such a huge franchise now. And that was one little arcade game that most younger fans haven't even played.

Mr. X - July 3, 2006 05:17 PM (GMT)
Yeah, and then you'd have to say that all the Donkey Kong Country games are also spinoffs of Donkey Kong.

Zephyrus - July 3, 2006 09:21 PM (GMT)
I don't really think that Mario became a spin off, rather than a continuation of Mario's career as the hero.

Mario leaves Pauline, falls down some pipe, and ends up addicted to shrooms and always saving that stupid bimbo of a princess.

Kirbyfan103 - July 20, 2006 01:24 PM (GMT)
I doubt it'd be an RPG, since it looks too platform-ish, though the message boards consider it one anyway...

Boshi - July 22, 2006 03:39 AM (GMT)
Most likely it will be an RPG sinse Nintendo made it Paper mario. It probably won't be turn-based though. Looking at the video, when mario jumped on a goompa, a number poped out as if mario did "damage" instead of automaticly killing it, and it lloked like it was still alive. So I'm guessing it's gameplay will be a 2-D action RPG.

It's a cross between a platformer and an RPG. I don't know how that's supposed to work, but Intelligent always comes up with something.

Just watch the video link above. It helps understand how they're gonna do it a bit more.

Don't link directly, even though these are the forums. Link to the page

Dragonice315 - September 11, 2006 05:26 PM (GMT)
Well I heard this new paper mario game not going to be a Rpg, this is why its called super paper mario, just like super mario bros just got paper in it...

Geno Spawn - September 20, 2006 01:23 AM (GMT)
actually is like some action rpg with the old plataforming style in 3D, like Zelda but with 3 playble characters, what make it somewhat cool.... i dunno but i think it is an action rpg because when mario hit the goombe a damage star popped, is just a idea

Dragonice315 - September 21, 2006 02:04 AM (GMT)
Ya some people say its not Rpg and some say it is Rpg, I think it is Rpg thought...

legacyofbob - August 6, 2008 03:20 PM (GMT)
No. Its a part of Paper Maro but its not an RPG. Its like the red headed step child of the PM series.

number1supermariofan - August 7, 2008 12:10 AM (GMT)
