Weapons and their descriptions: Everybody within the Nether carries some form of weapon, from upper-class ladies carrying a small stiletto to street urchins with a rusty knife, not to carry some form of offensive capability would be sheer suicide.
One weapon that would be a mainstay would be the sword, chief amongst melee weapons as being the one most widely available to people.
I have noticed an alarming trend among users recently, namely that the first sword they opt for is automatically a katana because of its strong place in popular culture (I myself am guilty of this). Now while the katana is an exceptionally well crafted weapon, pieces would be extremely rare in the nether as the only kind to withstand three hundred years of abuse (barring accidents) would be the very finest pieces crafted by masters and generally hidden away in some mountain. To this end I have devised a list of weaponry that might be available for the common man in the Nether to possess. These weapons would be useful in that they have staying power and good combat effectiveness. Of course, the blacksmiths in the city are capable of forging weapons but with the advent of the demon apocalypse and indeed the fact that for two hundred years before blacksmiths had been replaced by automated process on assembly lines, weapons forged by these are going to be of inferior quality to those forged before the industrial revolution.
Bladed Weapons
Rapier
A sword that, while flimsy, would certainly serve as an effective weapon against demons so long as they were not gigantic winged monstrosities with axes for teeth. Its comparative weight and simple design make it easy to repair and maintain, perhaps lasting three hundred years in the hands of skilled wielders.
Axes
While the axe in general is a ceremonial piece in modern day society (Because of their inherent danger and the risk that they carry) there are still examples forged that, while perhaps not the magnificent fighting tools they once were, are serviceable to most people provided they have the bulk to swing said weapon in an enclosed or even open space. Several examples of these include:
The francisca
Ostensibly a throwing axe, its curved blade and short handle make it an excellent side weapon when combined with a sword or larger axe
Boarding axe
Another example of power with relatively small size, the boarding axe is an axe that can easily be wielded with one or both hands. It is slightly longer and larger than most one handed axes, making it slightly heavier. However, the handle is frequently made from a pine core reinforced with layers of oak, ensuring a light if strong handle
Viking Axe
A single bladed axe with a nasty streak. Proportionally, the long axe has more in common with a modern meat cleaver than a wood axe. This complex construction results in a lively and quick weapon with devastating cutting ability. Its blade also slopes upwards, not outwards, ensuring a long cut and maximum damage for the size.
Hook axe
This smaller cousin of the Viking axe has an even more curved blade, one that extends like a normal axe while the lowest point curves back in to form a small ‘O’ between it and the handle. A skilled user can use this to hook a sword in and disarm an opponent, and indeed axes of this kind can be useful for all levels of fighters, although the closer you are to novice level the bigger gap you will need between blade and shaft.
Blunt Weapons
The kind of weapon most likely to have survived a demon apocalypse, it has tremendous power, a terrifying image and a long lifespan. Both maces and Clubs (Metal ones) will survive in excess of a thousand years unless attacked by a chisel and a hammer wielded by a skilled blacksmith.
The most deadly types of these would be the solid type. This type has no interior of air, being made exclusively of a lump of metal. This adds extra impetus to the attack, but it also forces the user to both be strong and sturdy to both wield the thing and to withstand the aftershocks of contact.
The small hollow examples would probably be easiest to wield among the citizens of the nether, being both medium in weight and power.
Large hollow examples are generally useless when employed by anyone over five feet, as the power generated from the swing will smash the weapon if it comes into contact with a surface hard enough.
Warhammers/ sledgehammers
These weapons are not unlike the blunt weapons in that they provide a long reach and tremendous close contact power. Yet this type of blunt instrument carries an extra bonus in that many examples come with a cutting blade forming the back of the head. This not only allows for spectacular killing blows and slices, it also functions as an unexpected weapon in a fight, catching an opponent off guard.
The Warhammer, although extremely rare by today’s standards and even more so by the nether standards, is like the Mace, the club and the maul in that it can withstand constant abuse with very little effect to the weapon.
The Splitting Maul, or sledgehammer with axe attached, is a smaller and far more widely available form of this weapon.
Both these weapons carry the greatest danger rating of all the weapons listed however, for the fact that if the weapon is swung in a power swing (Either over arm or side-to-side) and it misses or strikes its target a glancing blow, there is a danger that the shaft will stress and break or else that the head will fly off leaving you with either a pole of metal or wood.
Guns:
Many people today also carry guns within the nether. In a world filled with demons this is a perfectly sensible precaution. But increasingly I am finding people utilizing guns the shape or calibre of which they found, once again in popular fiction.
Please do try to remember that this is a fantasy Rp, but it is one that is set in the real world. There have never been guns produced for the sole purpose of bring large and imposing, nor guns so tiny they fit in the heel of your palm yet can inexplicably destroy an armoured truck.
Two members have suggested solutions to these problems. Tomas Hydraxus constructed his own rifle with scope out of piping put into place with the help of an old book. Cherubael uses no guns, instead opting for the rather more simple solution of Crossbows.
There are several guns that would have survived the demon apocalypse, either for their versatility or their sheer indestructibility:
The Kalashnikov semi automatic assault rifle/ Ak-47
A rifle currently in mass production due to its relative cheapness and ease of manufacture, it is a rifle that is famed for both its versatility and its legendary staying power.
The Kalashnikov fires solid ammunition at either an automatic or single shot capacity, over a range of about a thousand yards if you’re lucky and about five hundred yards if you want to actually hit something. The sight on it is laughable, although a magic beacon may be strapped to the underside to simulate a laser sight or a sniper scope scavenged from the various cities and on sale from Vayne sera will compensate.
While the gun may not be as powerful as others, nor as fast to reload and fire, it does have the incredible (some say miraculous) ability to keep firing under almost any circumstance. This rifle will fire in air, water and a vacuum. This is due to the simplicity of the firing mechanism, and indeed the entire rifle can be stripped, cleaned and repaired within about five to ten minutes for an experienced user.
Colt Single action revolver
A famous gun by today’s standards, its power, capacity and availability would make this an essential gun for any would be survivor. When compared to other handguns, the revolver class outstrips them in the area that matter most when you are running for your life (Weight, recoil and sheer coolness)
Its six shot capacity is less than many modern semi-automatic pistols, but its added power and superior sighting mechanism make it a weapon worth having.
Pistol blades
With the need for both a long and close range weapon increasing, and finding traditional bayonets largely usless in the face of regenrating demons, the pistol sword was devised by someone unknown in a gun foundry somewhere.
The idea is simple, namly that a pistol or rifle, whilst being made, has a metal cage fitted to the bottom of the barrel, to which a number of blades can be attached. The pistol blade is shown below, whilst a rifle blade actually has the blade slung from the trigger guard to the end of the barrel, the point only an inch away from the end of said barrel. The reason for this is the fact that an underlsung blade designed for smashing people out of the way is a far more effective weapon than a small stabbing blade on the end of the gun, a weapon which not only pointsthe muzzle away from enemies, it also mean you have to pull the baonet out to both fire and stab again.
This will give you an example of the kind of person who might have one, and indeed of the actual design on the gun.
While this is an exmple of what a gunblade would not look like.
Obsolete guns:
The kind of guns that would not have survived would be the kind of gun that requires a shoulder or any exertion larger than lifting a baby. This would rule out most grenade launchers, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers as well as turrets and static guns.
While these guns may be wielded with relative ease in the nether, the fact that they were so heavy would rule out most survivors utilizing them effectively or managing to transport them easily.
Here are some example of weaponry that would not be carried around, for one reason or another.
This gun may seem alright, but the shape indicates that this was designed more as a toy than as a weapon.
This sword, whilst highly decretive and lovely to look at, is completely pointless as no human prior to the nether would have been able to lift the thing properly, let alone utilize it in combat.
Slightly better but this gun has a major downside in that the under slung rifled barrel would be very heavy, reducing its effectiveness in combat as it would tire you more quickly than another gun of its calibre. A gun like this would have been discarded as running was a lot more important than looking bad-ass.
