ADOLESCENT (lol):
- Julie of the Wolves (plus related books)
- My Side of the Mountain
-Animorphs (I never got to finish this series, and still want to, but I'm a little embarrased)

Literal Epics are EPIC:
-Monkey or Journey to the West
-Romance of the Three Kingdoms (still need to finish. Don't mind the pictures at the top of the link, just scroll down.)
-The Mahabharata
--related: The Bhagavad Gita (might be slightly too religious for your taste)

Classic sci-fi, especially if you're into telepaths and mind-powers:
Sturgeon, Theodore - More Than Human
Bester, Alfred - The Demolished Man / The Stars My Destination (both excellent)
Herbert, Frank - Dune

I won't recommend Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land though, because it is boring.

Fantasy:
Bakker, Scott R. - Prince of Nothing -trilogy (The Darkness That Comes Before, The Warrior-Prophet, The Thousandfold Thought)
Hobb, Robin - The Farseer -trilogy (Assassin's Apprentice, Royal Assassin, Assassin's Quest)

Crime:
Larsson, Stieg - The Millennium -trilogy. (Men who hate women / The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire, third issue English title not yet known, but available in Swedish or Finnish wink.gif ).
I can reommend Larsson to those who like thrillers but would like a slightly different take than your usual ass-kicking, smar-cracking detectives or the Poirot -class geniuses of deduction. The first issue of the Millennium -series has two titles, the latter one is more usual because the UK/US publisher thought the original title was "upsetting". rolleyes.gif But it is superbly written.

Really...damn, I picked up Stranger for free.

Oh, and...

WESTERN/SCIENCE-FICTION/FANTASY

-The Dark Tower by Stephen King: Just remember, [Paraphrased from King] the joy is in the journey, note the ending.
