it's here, it's finally here. the most popular of all the C&C universes is finally getting the credit it deserves with the upcoming release of the Red Alert 3 beta. I simply can't wait for it to come out. I've been keeping track of it via videos on GameTrailers and the occasional visit to the RA3 forums.

Is anyone else here a fan of the series or just RTS games in general?

yea rts is cool. I think I've heard of Command and Conquer before, but never played it. Of course, my favorite RTS is the Kingdom Hearts series. Haven't played Chain of Memories, but that's pretty much all I'm missing.

technically Kingdom Hearts comes under RPG. RTS games are like Age of Empires and Starcraft. Although you can get some that are slightly different, usually where you just get a set group of soldiers and move them around the map, no base building etc whatsoever.

We should make a Kingdom Hearts through too though.

I thought RTS was simply a sub-category of the RPG category? Or am I just losing my edge? I haven't played many games in a while. unsure.gif

I'd say you're losing your edge. RTS and RPG are both big main gaming genres.

RTS = Real Time Strategy
RPG = Role Playing Game

but it's no biggy. back on topic now. I have pre-ordered RA3 and now just need to upgrade my computer before the game is released. No point having a game you can't play right?!

Absolutely indeedy. Sorry but one thing. Here's what I thought it was.

RPG: Role-Playing Game
TBS: Turn-Based Strategy (A sub-category of RPG. Games such as the Final Fantasy series and Tales of Symphonia)
RTS: Real-Time Strategy (Another sub-category of RPG. Games such as the Kingdom Hearts series, Dirge of Cerberus, and the Command & Conquer series)
That's how I thought it went.

hahaha well I guess I can see how you could have gotten it mixed up like that. luckily for you I'm here to help.

RPG: Role Playing Game. More well known games of this genre being Kingdom Hearts and the Final Fantasy series.

TBS: Turn Based Strategy. Quite a rarity now, more common back in flash games or games from 20 to 30 years ago. Most are quite similar to either a flashy cross between DnD and Chess, or a web browser game (like Nuke Zone) crossed with C&C. Games are often accidental put under this title due to the implanted fighting system of the game (ie Final Fantasy).

RTS: Real Time Strategy. Born from the need for more excitement, realism and a need to be challenged and forced to think on the fly. RTS games pretty much evolved from TBS games. Instead of waiting your turn to tell your individual 6 or 7 units what to do, in order, you were instead granted the freedom to establish a base, pump out units, gather resources and savagely smash your enemies face in all at the same time without having to stop and wait for their turn to be up. Popular game titles include the Age of Empires collection and the three C&C Universes (Red Alert, Tiberium and Generals).

in other news... I FINALLY GOT MY PREORDER OF RA3!!! sadly it actually requires your computer to have access to the net otherwise it won't let you run the actual game after you've gone through the trouble of installing it. Not to mention my computer needs to be ungraded just to reach the other minimum requires for the game. *sigh* at least I still have the game.

RA3 = Red Alert 3. It's the latest release in the Command & Conquer line. The third installation of their Red Alert universe, it's been ten years in the waiting. Sadly as I said before, I can't quite play it yet.

lol well Command & Conquer has 3 different 'universes' or game series in it so they've had plenty of other titles come out in that period to keep the fans occupied. Not to mention it probably didn't help with Westwood being dissolved into EA about 3 years back.
