I think it would be useful and relevant to provide the reason for each person's pre-longevity fame.

I'll do that once I get back to working on this list.

I'm surprised this hasn't been done before. Very interesting. Wikipedia's lists of centenarians would be useful for this purpose, but you might already know about that.

This is more of a personal thing, but what's the oldest person you would have heard of even if they didn't live to extreme old age? For me it would probably be Rose Kennedy, with Wade Mainer (I had no idea he was still alive when I first heard his music) as a close second. People like Leila Denmark were locally famous more than anything, but that doesn't mean they don't belong on your list.

Maybe Leila Denmark, Frederica Sagor Maas, or Alphaeus Cole. I would have eventually found out about Maas by reading about 1920s films and Hollywood. I might have found out about Cole by reading about art and American artists, which I'm also kinda interested in. I might have still found out about Mrs. Denmark from some page about the whooping cough.

I stretched this list back to 1932 for now. I might stretch it back even farther.

I'm not a much of an art student (most of my knowledge comes from an introductory Survey of Western Art course), but Cole's paintings remind me a lot of the American Impressionist John Singer Sargent, and sure enough, the two were friends. He may have lived in the shadow of more famous figures, but he has a likable enough style in a painting like this one. I wonder if the price of his art shot up once he was recognized as oldest man.

Nice work on the rest of your list.

It's interesting that the men and women on this list are pretty evenly divided, especially for the post-WWII part of this list.

Yeah, my list only mentions people who would have still been considered at least mildly famous even if they died 50 years before their real life deaths but still did all the same things that they did in real life.

It looks like it must have taken a lot of time! I can't think of an efficient way to search for 90+-year-olds who died in a particular year, short of searching news and book archives with terms like "died at age 97" (and hoping that some of the names that came up were notable) or scouring the year-of-death categories on Wikipedia. I can see why you didn't go back farther for the time being.

The records would look a lot different if you took out Katherine Plunket, who was related to notable people but who had no greater personal claim to fame than an unpublished volume of drawings. Without her, the gap between someone on your list reaching 102 and someone reaching 103 would be a whopping 68 years. But deciding what qualifies as fame can be tricky.

Had I extended my list back to the 1860s, Teresa Saporiti would have been on my list at age 106. However, though I don't question her age, I would like at least a month of birth to be known for everyone on my list, and so far only the year of birth is known for her.

Plunket was an Irish aristocrat. Even had she died at age 60, she would have still been famous for her drawings had she made them before that point.

Keep in mind that all the people on my list are consistently aged 95 or over for now. As of yet, there are no exceptions to this rule. I stopped this list at 1881 because that is the year that President Garfield was assassinated, because I just got extremely tired, exhauted, and sore, and because I wanted to stretch this list back at least 130 years from today. If you see any errors, please let me know.
