Title: Alice Herz-Sommer
Description: Oldest holocaust Survivor

Baxi - June 20, 2011 02:32 PM (GMT)
Alice Herz-Sommer (born 23rd Nov 1903) is pretty impressive.
She is the oldest survivor of the Nazi concentration camps and attributes her longevity to her optimism
She still plays the piano well and remains independent
She was born in the Czech Republic but now lives in North London
I suspect she is a candidate for extreme longevity

Alice is an impressive person. Her philosophical view of her life and her optimism are remarkable.

Just a little note: Alice was born in Prague in 1903. At the time of her birth, Prague was the capital of Bohemia, in those days part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The Czech Republic was founded in 1993. At that time, Alice was already in her 90th year and lived in London. ;)

There was a programme on BBC4, which was broadcast for her 106th birthday (and repeated again earlier this year). She's a remarkable lady with such a positive attitude to life. I found her quite an inspiring woman.

I will be posting an extensive list of references and videos in the birthday lists tomorrow.

It’s an interesting story.

... the video is nice, although in czech (even after sixty years her pronounciation is way better than that of English). And you may see glimpse of Karel Ančerl (who was interned too) conducting at 0:45.

If I understand it right the video is from 2007 and 2008 right? She looks real good.

SiameseTurtle - December 6, 2011 12:03 PM (GMT)
Yes, it says it was done when she was 104.

Here's a new ~30 minute radio clip about Alice: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00lw91w
