Chelsea has just informed me that there is a Kidney Research charity event in the Kendal Shopping Centre this Saturday from 11am to 3pm.
It is football based with representatives there from Carlisle United, though they are not there to promote Carlisle. Chelsea says they are willing to give floor space to anyone from Kendal Town (either FC or Supporters Club) to hand out flyers, supporters club membership forms etc.
I won't be available, and in any case we have a game at 3pm, but if anyone wants to pick up on this please feel free to do so.

Just to put a little bit more meat on the bones of Postman Paddy's thread. I met today with the management of Westmorland shopping centre and they have offered this floor space on Saturday to Kendal Town FC to try and publicise the club in any way we seem fit to do so. As we have a game on Saturday, it will be extremely difficult to get something arranged by the football club.
As a result, I contacted Postman Paddy to see if the Indepenent Supporter's Club would like the opportunity to get in there and advertise yourselves...i.e. Membership forms etc...they regularly have 18,000 visitors on a Saturday, so imagine how many people you could get your message across to !!
It is on a par, if not better, than when you wanted to use The Birdcage. There is no cost at all...just the chance to publicise yourselves and Kendal Town. You need only be there for a couple of hours, say 11.00am to 1.00pm.
If anybody is willing to print off stuff or can attend this, then please post ASAP so that I can confirm if you/we are going to be there.
It's a great opportunity, don't let it slip by people.

Netherfield (as was) was arguably the biggest Non-league club in the North West during the 1950s and 1960s. At one point they could well have made the step to league football (but chose not to).
However in those days the club was supported financially and figuratively by the K Shoes factory down the road. I do believe that each employee made a small contribution through their pay packets to the sports facilities on Parkside Road (cricket club etc), thereby ensuring the continuation of sports for the workers. The original supporters club was so successful that they were the single largest financial contributor to the running of the club for quite some time. It was they who paid for the stand and changing facilities. And it was they who built and ran the Park (Supporters Club as was).
Sadly those heady days of 2,000 non-league supporters for a small town like Kendal, bearing in mind the population was much lower 40 years ago, are long gone. There is too much availability of other leisure and social facilities to compete against. Transport makes it easier to follow league clubs too. Therefore any supporters club really has its work cut out to get people to come to non league football, and an even harder job to make them stay.
I think between two to four generations of kids have missed growing up with the club during the low years of the 1970s and 1980s, which obviously affects their future generations. Simply telling people they should get down to the club because it's their local club is not enough anymore.
The key is getting to the kids when they are young, so any form of outreach, youth development and schools interaction is the way to go, to my mind. It's going to be a hard job competing against playstations, the wii, internet porn, facebook, cheap booze, drugs, casual violence, skateboarding, boredom and other pointless pleasures that seems to preoccupy the minds of our youth these days, but I certainly wish the new supporters club all the best and hope that you can keep coming up with inventive, family-orientated, fun, interactive and rewarding community activities that will bring more younger people to the club. As the cliché goes, 'they're the future'.

The youth is the one! If the club/supporters club can get kids interested in Kendal Town that would be a great start.
I think things like soccer schools, and send some tickets to schools for say the FC United match maybe a good idea?
Something like this was done at the end of last season i think? and the attendances went up considerably!
Give them a free sample of what Kendal Town Fc is about, and with the way Town play i am sure thats enough of an appeal to get them to come back for more.
Look at other non league clubs that have a good track record of getting the youth involved, see what they do?
Sounds daft but try and get some kind of sporting celebrity down to a Kendal match? its a way of bribing people into the ground, they come in to see the celebrity, but as Kendal play good football that would soon get them hooked to come back for more. And even if they didn't come back for more they would mention Kendal town to their mates (word of mouth) news spreads? more come to watch us!
Kent Valley Junior league: Every Sunday all your local youth teams play, in the Kent Valley junior League. i go to alot of these matches and trust me these kids are mad for football!, maybe its worth somehow on a Sunday trying to promote Kendal Town too them?
Anyhow those are some of my ideas, am sure we will be discussing alot at the next supporters meeting!

Right then people, here's the plan. All meet outside the O2 phone shop on the lower level. When you're all there, there is a door opposite the O2 shop with an intercom button on it, press the button and say who you are...the door will open, follow the signs up to the management/secrity office. Ask for Alan Green and you will get your passes and he'll take you to where you need to be. On leaving, do the same and hand back your passes or give them to a security guard. Have a good time and spread the word. See you at the game P.S. It might be a good idea to post who is going and what time you're all meeting

I'm letting you all know now, I can come along at 11, but can't stay till 1, will try and stay for an hour. Have over 200 flyers thanks to Kev and my shoddy printer. Does anyone want picking up to get into town, as this lazy ass will be driving!
Also, wacker will there not be a fixture list in the programme anyway? I have had a thought about giving a laminated credit card sized fixture list to the supporters members. I don't know how useful this is, cos generally everyone checks on here anyway. Something to think about though. |
Shoddy printer ? - I thought she meant me at first
