Map of Pern: Map drawn by our wonderful Silverdrak ![]() (your characters may travel within the Green area - everything grey needs admin permission first Weyr: 200-700 Dragons + up to 600 People Weyrfolk Hold: 400-1000 People including Crafthalls and close Settlements, oversees all Minor Holds, Cotholds and Settlements - ruled by Lord and Lady Minor Hold: 100-400 People, possibly a small Crafthall - ruled by Lord and Lady (Minor) Cotholds: 2-5 Families, sometimes very isolated - ruled by a small council Settlements: 1-2 Families, either branching out from larger settlements or completely isolated - ruled by the head of each Family Climate at Sylvan Weyr: Sylvan Weyrs Climate is always warm, even in winter when it gets rarely cold enough for ice and snow. The summers are hot but not dry thanks to the closeness to the shore. A strong wind is oftentimes coming from the open water, bringing clouds and rain to the Weyr. Sylvan Weyr is, thanks to its Climate, relatively tithe-independant, especially during an Intervall. Fishing and hunting is easy, the water fresh and clean. Without Thread, Sylvan Weyr could be a Paradise - the presence of so many dragons keeping felines away. The Tithes Sylvan Weyr demands are small and are one of the reasons why the relationship between Sylvan Hold and Sylvan Weyr has always been good, even during long Intervalls, making traveling and trading between both places very easy. Climate at Sylvan Hold: Sylvan Holds climate is much rougher than Sylvan Weyrs, with colder winters and dryer summers. Snow is still rare - often seen in the Mountains above the hold but rarely at the Hold itself. Only parts of Sylvan Hold have been dug into the stone, many larger buildings branching out into the surrounding areas. Sylvan Hold has something rarely found on Pern otherwise - roads made of stone. The Hold is a little like it looks - open minded and welcoming everyone who travels along their roads. Of course there are darker corners but the majority of the holdfolk seems to be relatively happy to live at Sylvan, either in wooden buildings or behind stonewalls. Sylvan Holds relationship to their Weyr has always been good and the tithes they have to give are small, prefering to trade rather than pay. Under the last and recent Lord Sylvan Hold has begun to flourish, filling its buildings to the rim with people. It is likely that a few dozen of them will start a number of Cotholds here and there in the future, spreading over the wide land. Sylvan Hold had some troubles with Felines when it had been founded but ever since it grew larger the Felines backed away. It might happen that one of the outer Settlements is attacked but even those attacks are swift and rare, costing a few herdbeasts and a fence or two every turn but not much more. |
