I was just wandering when a gyp comes in heat is there a certain day that you should put a male in with her or should you leave them together through the whole cycle. Will you get more pups from multiple breedings or will this cause some pups not to be as developed on the due dat as the ones from the original breeding. I was asking this because I had head if you bree between the 7th and 11th days you get the most and helthiest pups and I heard the more times a dog is breed the more likely you are to have trouble. So what is the best time during the heat cycle to breed and how many times shoukd you allow them to breed

The most pups my Feist has had is 7. The least was 1. The average is 5-6. I don't think you can make a dog have more pups then what nature intended. I have bred a dog only one time and she had 6 pups. I have also let a male stay in with her for the entire heat cycle and still have only 6 pups. The litter we had Thursday was tho ONLY TIME I have lost a puppy. I have never had a runt. Some pups are larger than others and some will be smaller. I let the female decide when she wants to be bred. When she starts flagging then it is time. 4950.gif

breeding time varies from dog to dog,but I have found around the 11-13 days is usually a good time.
I have had some that would come in heat & go out in 7-10 days
as ironwoods has said most are ready when they flag the tail over out of the way.

Well what actually got me thinking about this is I know a dog has more than 1 egg and that if a dog is breed to more than 1 male it is possible to have a litter of pups that may not all have the same sire. So I was thinking if you let a dog be breed multiple times that there would be a better chance for all the eggs to become fertile. I really don't know was just thinking and wanted a few other opinions

When I was a child we had a female dog that would excape every time she came in heat. The slut would make her rounds around our small town. 63 days later she would have her little mutt's. You could actually tell which of the neabours dogs was the Sire. It was living proof that more then one dog can sire pups.

Some females will let a male breed them anytime in the cycle and some dont want to breed at anytime ive had one or two that you had to be thear and hold them so they would be bred and i dont like to let a male and female stay together over a day and a half i take them out and wait a day then put them back together and for most part i like to breed a female when she is on the down side of the cycle than on the front of it ... So can a dog being breed at different times of her cycle actually make her pups more or less developed than others?

Dogs can be like people or people like dogs. They can breed many times during a heat cycle, but they have a limited time to conceive.

Luther, Dan is right a dog can be bred by many dogs during her cycle and may be bred by more than one male but it would have to be in a short period of time and i can not say for sure on how long but after a female has been bred and catches she can not have pups from another male no matter how many she is bred by ... Dogs can be like people or people like dogs. They can breed many times during a heat cycle, but they have a limited time to conceive.

Reason I was asking about this I had a beagle the last liter I raised who got bred on the 3rd day and again just a few days before she went out. It was an accidental breeding both times. She had nine pups 6 very healthy and the last 3 were alive but very very premature with the roofs of there mouths missing and unable to suck. All 3 were half the size of the others and ended up dying cause they were unable to suck. I just assumed they were from the second breeding because they appeared to be a week or so behind.
