Um.....did I miss something? I couldn't find this person's post last night. Was it already taken care of?

charliejones103 - September 13, 2007 03:38 PM (GMT)
Yes, Carlos took care of it that very first day!!! Yay Carlos

It was a post inviting you to go visit Porn sites... and I just don't see that as appropriate for this board.

I've noticed we've been getting a lot of spammers signing up lately. I used to go through the memberlist and try to get rid of spammers (since most are pretty obvious), but I haven't done it in so long that I'm very far behind. You could usually tell by who was active over the past 30 days... but most spammers aren't going to be extremely active, so I'm not going to catch the older ones until they post.

I noticed there's a few accounts from us that haven't been used, yet, also. What I'm going to try to do is continue with the user groups idea, and start blocking off certain areas to anyone not in certain user groups. I'm also going to set up a WhiteList group. If anyone signs up with an account they're not going to use right away, please PM me the account name and I will add it to the WhiteList group. This will be like a lurker type of group that can post with the real members, but doesn't have to be part of the Players or Senior Staff groups because the accounts there won't be used for the game. This will help make preening out any possible spammers easier because I can dump the inactive accounts by using some search criteria that will just delete all of them.

Now, I know not all of you are going to remember all of your inactive accounts, so some may get deleted by accident if I don't realize who they are and move them before preening the generic Members group. I apologize ahead of time, and, if you decide to use an inactive account and it's not there, feel free to recreate it and PM me the account name so I can either WhiteList it or move it to the Players group.

Hopefully, this will prevent vulgar posts and other advertisements from getting through and messing up our boards.

EDIT: Actually, what might even be better is if people want to PM me e-mail addresses you've used to sign up for accounts. That way, I can search based on e-mail addresses instead of going for individual accounts. I'm working on the list for Carlos right now. Dear Lord, boy... how many accounts do you have? LOL!!!

Alternatively, we could simple isolate unused accounts so they cant post. I know Carlos has worked very hard to get increase membership, even from lurkers who just want to read. I'd hate to see his efforts the past four years washed away in a mass cull of unused profiles. I can see already we've lost nearly 40 members. It rather nulifies everything he's done.

People don't have to be members to read. I don't see what the sheer number of members will add to anything. And, depending on the e-mail address, you can tell which ones aren't actually reading. I can search based on join date and last active date. If they're within a few days of each other and over a month ago, that person's definitely not coming back.

Also, if their account has been in Validating status for a long time, then it's probably someone with an invalid e-mail account and most likely a spambot.
