Title: Fantasy NBA

Sully - September 30, 2006 08:10 PM (GMT)
Figured I'd complete to quartet and run a fantasy league for each of the four sports. I don't think it'll be tough to round up 12 for hoops, I already have seven and am looking for five more.

$75 per team, we'll draft in mid-Oct. Come on Buck, slomo and Mac, we need you. Not sure who else is into hoops, but I need a fantasy fix from January through the baseball draft and this did the trick last year.

PM me, leave a message here or email me if interested. So far no love for hockey, but I'll somehow find at least seven more for a 10-team league. Was thinking Joe and Gummy were locks for the NHL but I haven't heard back.

Joe - September 30, 2006 09:02 PM (GMT)
Gonna pass. Joe wouldn't be able to identify all the teams, let alone identify who is a good player. I'd wind up drafting John Wallace because he won me $400 in a college pool a few years ago. My buddy's wife says that was the day she knew I was insane. I was dancing around their living room when he hit that buzzer-beater vs. Georgia.

How much longer will Joe be referring to himself in the third AND first person?

Joe - September 30, 2006 09:50 PM (GMT)
Wait 'til Joe refers to themself in the second person plural.

Mel Hall - September 30, 2006 10:13 PM (GMT)

No, through commissioner, I don't trust anyone else after the football fiasco.

Yes, $75 seems like a good amount I think, it's like what, two, three hours pay.

Come on, Mel, it'll be fun. And $600 for first place.

Mel Hall - September 30, 2006 10:46 PM (GMT)
yeah im in.. let me know when i have to schedule those extra 2-3 hrs at work so I can pay up

Gummy - October 1, 2006 12:37 AM (GMT)
I'm out for this one and the hockey one. Just can't afford it.

I'd be in for a death pool however.

It's not that hard. Just like any other fantasy draft. Each team gets X number of people. When someone wins a round, they get a payout. Then they can replace their person.

Sully - October 1, 2006 01:31 AM (GMT)
Dude, that's brutal.

Danielle - October 1, 2006 01:37 AM (GMT)
Our biggest problems were:

1. Convincing people this isn't a horrific thing to do
2. Figuring out if people at the top of the list were worth more than the people at the bottom
3. Seeing if people could add extras not on their list and what sort of point value would apply to them.

troy - October 1, 2006 01:42 AM (GMT)
I didn't get the 'ranks' at all. I've never even heard of the No. 2 guy.

You all should be locked up.

I keep trying to get my friends to do a death pool involving the 12 of us. I figure we'll all be sad one day when one of us dies (because hey, we're going to) we may as well makes sure we have a little fun with it.

troy - October 1, 2006 01:01 PM (GMT)
You are perhaps weirder than I originally thought.

I concur. Still like you, though.

Troy -- what's with the sig, I shouldn't have used straight twice in one sentence, but that's accurate, Syracuse lost 11 straight and are 3-0 since.

troy - October 1, 2006 01:57 PM (GMT)
I first read it like they lost their 11 straight and won their third straight in the same game.

Are we in Randomness II? No? OK, great. Here's something, courtesy of deadspin, for anyone looking to kill 10 minutes:

MSU radio guy loses it.

If you're quickly bored, skip to about a quarter of the way through.

troy - October 22, 2006 12:46 AM (GMT)
Draft in 15 minutes. Another tomorrow night. We'll see if I do better sober or not.

I have the seventh pick. Who should I take? In my rankings, I've got Gilbert Arenas seventh, but I think I might have been drunk then. I tend to overvalue performance from the previous season.

troy - October 22, 2006 12:47 AM (GMT)
Check that; Arenas is the Yahoo! No. 7. Mine's Ray Allen. Now I'm sure I was drunk.

My top seven:

Stoudamire
Marion
Bryant
Brand
James
Garnett
Allen

Who should I take instead of Allen?

adam & doctor drew - October 22, 2006 02:47 AM (GMT)
Bosh or Duncan

Scott - October 23, 2006 06:13 AM (GMT)
Um.....DIRK????

Ultimate question.....out of 10 teams, where would you want to pick? Slot 1-10?

In our fantasy leagues, we pick names out of a hat. First name selected gets to choose his draft slot, 1-10. Next has next slots to pick from. Next has 8, and so on and so on.

I have the first selection. Adds a little wrinkle to the draft. Do I pick first and grab James or do I drop down a little lower and hope to grab say a Brand and Pierce or something with the 7 and 14 picks?

I need some help.

troy - October 23, 2006 01:50 PM (GMT)
Go 1. I maybe pay a little too much attention to the previous season's performance, but going off that, I didn't see anyone who can give you anywhere near as much in as many categories as James.

My seventh pick ended up being Stoudamire. I had the fourth pick in my sober draft the next night and took Brand, as I reconsidered how healthy Stoudamire might be. In comparing the two drafts, I think I did better drunk ...

Terry
Peterson
Mike James
Lewis
Stoudamire
Deng
Ming
Kristic
Knight
Turkoglu
Simmons
Juwan Howard
Jefferson

... than sober:

Hinrich
Deng
Mike James
Lewis
Brand
Gasol
Kristic
Brezec
Andre Miller
Turkoglu
Wells
Walker
Magloire

Scott - October 23, 2006 09:25 PM (GMT)
Well, I took the first pick but I have to say, I strongly debated on taking the 6th and would've been happy with any one of these guys:

1 - James
Then....
2 - Garnett
3 - Bryant
4 - Nowitzki (center eligible)
5 - Wade
6 - Marion

Between picks 2-6, ANY one of those guys would be huge. I could've grabbed Marion and swung back around and maybe snagged Duncan if he slipped. Oh well. I'll enjoy a year of rooting for Lebron. That'll be fun as hell.

Time Out - October 24, 2006 02:33 PM (GMT)
You have a better team than I do, Scott...my team in the Sheriff league blows big chunks.

troy - October 24, 2006 02:46 PM (GMT)
Who do you have, TO?

Mark Citrone - October 24, 2006 04:08 PM (GMT)
My team in the Sheriff's league:

I sort of screwed up early on because I assumed 'Bron would be eligible at F/G since Kobe was eligible at G (WRONG!), I then tried to make up for this by drafting
Gerald Wallace, assuming he was a G and not a F (WRONG!), and then I
had to panic and luckily got my hands on Luol Deng, who is eligible at
both G/F.

Then with the final pick, I was hoping to draft Danny Granger, but apparently we're not allowed to have more than seven players at the same position on your team. So I went to draft Shane Battier since I'm thin at guard because Gerald Wallace and 'Bron somehow aren't eligible as guards, and then I autodrafted ZAZA PACHULIA! And then to make matters worse, the Sheriff had the next pick and he drafted Battier within 2 seconds haha. So yeah, here's to hoping that ZAZA PACHULIA carries my team this year!

Draft Results
Round 1
1 Reggie Miller - The Knick Killer LeBron James (F CLE)

Round 2
24 Reggie Miller - The Knick Killer Andrei Kirilenko (F UTA)

Round 3
25 Reggie Miller - The Knick Killer Jermaine O'Neal (C/F IND)

Round 4
48 Reggie Miller - The Knick Killer Jameer Nelson (G ORL)

Round 5
49 Reggie Miller - The Knick Killer Gerald Wallace (F CHA)

Round 6
72 Reggie Miller - The Knick Killer Luol Deng (G/F CHI)

Round 7
73 Reggie Miller - The Knick Killer Sam Cassell (G LAC)

Round 8
96 Reggie Miller - The Knick Killer Chris Wilcox (F SEA)

Round 9
97 Reggie Miller - The Knick Killer Darko Milicic (F ORL)

Round 10
120 Reggie Miller - The Knick Killer Jamaal Tinsley (G IND)

Round 11
121 Reggie Miller - The Knick Killer* Zaza Pachulia (C ATL)

So I am:

G: Jameer Nelson
G: Luol Deng
G: Sam Cassell

F: LeBron James
F: Andrei Kirilenko
F: Gerald Wallace

C: Jermaine O'Neal

FLEX: Chris Wilcox/Jamaal Tinsley/Darko (Or Zaza?!?!)

Time Out - October 24, 2006 04:41 PM (GMT)
I'm begging ya Mark, please don't be one of those fantasy people who says they screwed up with the number one pick. Maybe you got a little greedy because you thought he qualified at two positions, but you have the best player in the game--bar none--in LeBron James. Any of us would have killed for the top pick.

As for some of your other guys, Darko is expected to have a big year and I've heard good things about Kirilenko. Then again I really don't follow the league as much as the rest of you guys so at least I have an excuse for my team to wind up being a pile of excrement. I have Kevin Garnett (a considerably older and less talented version of LeBron), maybe two other decent players and a bunch of dreck. Wanted Nowitzki or Wade and they were both gone by the fifth pick...that pretty much sealed my fate; that and the fact I've never done an online draft before and didn't know after two minutes the computer would automatically pick someone for me. <_<

And expect to spend all your points on Granger because I want him too. :D

Troy, if you really want a laugh here's what else I have:

C - Andrew Bogut (out 4-6 wks), Stromile Swift (because you can't have enough guys named Stromile on your fantasy team)
F - Garnett, Richard Jefferson, Antawn Jamison, Hedo Turkoglu (see above comment, can't have enough Hedos either), Shelden Williams
G - Mike Bibby (out at least two wks), Cuttino Mobley, Brandon Roy, and Raymond Felton

If my injured guys come back when they're supposed to I might have a decent second half, but that's a big might.

troy - October 24, 2006 04:53 PM (GMT)
Wow, TO. I think you reached for a couple of guys. No shame in having Garnett, though. He's a strong No. 1.

I don't get why both your and Mark's teams don't look so hot. I did two 12-team drafts, and while I won't repost them in their entireties, I do feel like they're both 'topheavier' than yours:

Terry
Peterson
Mike James
Lewis
Stoudamire
Deng
Ming
Kristic

------------

Hinrich
Deng
Mike James
Lewis
Brand
Gasol
Kristic
Brezec
(plus Andre Miller; watch out for him this season)

Mel Hall - October 24, 2006 05:12 PM (GMT)
Im in the Sheriff League too. Had a tough time concentrating while drafting & watching the Giants game.. Every time Drew went down, i'd forget about my team.. Here's who I got:

G- Billups, Joe Johnson, Alston, Ridnour
F- Dirk, Josh Smith, Mike Miller, Ricky Davis, Drew Gooden
C- Dalembert, Nazr Mohammed

I'm not saying I screwed up with the top pick. I'm saying I screwed up with assuming that LeBron qualified for G/F, which is my fault for not knowing. As a result, that screwed up my draft in the later rounds because I assumed he was a G/F for the first like four or five rounds!

adam & doctor drew - October 24, 2006 06:34 PM (GMT)
I couldn't make the Sheriff draft last nite so my entire team was auto-picked:

C-Stoudemire, Okur, Brezec
F-Bosh, Villanueva, Stojakovic, Gay, Szczerbiak
G-Baron Davis, Diaw, E Jones

TO, I'll take Bibby off your hands.

Scott - October 24, 2006 06:39 PM (GMT)
ADD - It actually looks like you have the better team coming out of the draft.

Buck - October 24, 2006 06:58 PM (GMT)
I probably should have just left the room to go watch football and Studio 60 since my team did not come out the way I envisioned it beforehand.

I got beat out for about 6 guys I wanted, and it was tough having to make two picks in a row every single time, and then waiting 22 picks before it came around again.

Is this straight rotisserie all the way through, or is there a head-to-head playoffs as well?

Scott - October 24, 2006 07:52 PM (GMT)
How did the first 10 go?

adam & doctor drew - October 24, 2006 09:05 PM (GMT)
1 LeBron James (F CLE)
2 Dwyane Wade (G MIA)
3 Kobe Bryant (G LAL)
4 Dirk Nowitzki (F DAL)
5 Kevin Garnett (F MIN)
6 Elton Brand (F LAC)
7 Steve Nash (G PHO)
8 Dwight Howard (F ORL)
9 Paul Pierce (F BOS)
10 Chris Bosh (F TOR)
